A collector on the Iowa-Nebraska border called us at the end of a long remodel of a detached shop on his property and wanted automotive two post lifts installed as the final piece of the build. He wasn’t running a business — the plan was to do exhaust work, driveline maintenance, and general project work on a rotating set of six vehicles he keeps between his primary garage and the new building. This is the story of that install, told through the first year of ownership from spec conversation through the first full round of cable and cylinder inspection at the twelve-month mark.

Spec Conversation Before the Order
Collector shops have specific requirements that don’t map to commercial spec sheets. Vehicles range from a low-slung sports coupe to a lifted Bronco, and the lift has to handle both without adapter juggling. When we sat down with the border collector to size his automotive two post lifts, we talked through the six vehicles by weight and ground clearance before we picked a capacity. The Bronco was the heaviest at just under 6,500 pounds. Everything else sat below 4,000 pounds. Capacity was easy — a 10,000-pound lift covered the fleet with margin.
The trickier conversation was arm reach and pad drop. A lowered coupe needs a pad that sits flush with the floor when the lift is fully down, otherwise the pad hits the rocker panel before it contacts a frame point. A lifted truck needs an adapter stack that raises the pad several inches. We spec’d the lift with low-profile arms and a truck adapter kit in the same package. That way he never had to order after the fact, and both vehicles found the frame first try.
The Building Was Ready — But Not Quite Ready
The shop was a fresh 40×40 pole building with a new slab and ten-foot side walls. On paper that’s plenty. In practice, the truss dropped ceiling clearance to nine and a half feet at the peak, which was a hair too tight for the overhead configuration on a 10K clearfloor. The overhead bar would have physically fit but would have limited the max column height to a version we didn’t want for the Bronco.
We shifted the spec to a baseplate configuration mid-conversation, which kept the overhead clearance open and gave him full column height for the tallest vehicle in the collection. The trade-off is the crossover bar at floor level, but for a private collector shop that isn’t handling heavy in-and-out traffic, that trade is easy to accept. Small building adjustments like this are why we prefer to have the spec conversation before the walls go up. In this case, we caught it before delivery and saved a return shipment. Install Day and the First Test Cycle
Install went in a single day. Our crew crated in, laid out the anchor pattern against the slab, drilled and set the anchors, uncrated the columns and stood them up, plumbed and squared them, ran the hydraulic hoses, tied in the electrical, added fluid, and bled the system. First cycle went to full extension with no vehicle on the arms, then a second cycle with a work sedan we borrowed from a neighbor for the test.
The collector had never watched a lift install before and asked to shadow the crew all afternoon, which is not unusual — private buyers want to understand the equipment they just committed to. We walked him through the safety lock ladder audibly, showed him how to check arm restraint engagement, and demonstrated the emergency descent procedure. Then we did a dry cycle with him on the controls so he built muscle memory for the up and down buttons. That’s not standard on a commercial install, but for a private shop where he’s the only operator, it’s the difference between a confident owner and a nervous one.
Exhaust and Driveline Access on Automotive Two Post Lifts
The reason he picked a two-post over a four-post was full-underside access. Exhaust work on a car sitting on a four-post’s runways is workable but awkward because the runways are always in the way. Driveline work on a rear-wheel-drive car is nearly impossible on a four-post because the driveshaft runs directly under the rear runway. A two-post lifts the vehicle by the frame and leaves the entire underside clear from front bumper to rear differential.
In the first four months of ownership, he did a full exhaust replacement on the coupe, a rear driveshaft U-joint on a project truck, and a transmission cross-member drop on a third vehicle. Every job that would have been miserable on jack stands was straightforward on the lift. That’s the value proposition of a two-post for a collector — the tool matches the work. He told us in the fall check-in call that he’d done more mechanical work in four months than he had in the previous two years combined.
The First Six-Month Inspection
Six months in, we scheduled a return visit for the first inspection. Cables get their first check at six months because that’s when they’ve settled into their final tension and any manufacturing stretch has worked out. We looked at cable tension on both sides, felt the entire length of each cable for kinks or fraying, checked the safety lock engagement audibly on both columns, verified fluid level, and did a cycle test with a vehicle on the arms.
One cable had settled a hair on the passenger side, which we adjusted in about ten minutes. Everything else was in spec. We logged the visit, left the collector a copy of the log, and set the next inspection for twelve months. This is the routine for the first year of any lift we install — six-month check, twelve-month check, then annual after that. The Twelve-Month Follow-Up
Twelve months brought the second scheduled visit. By this point the collector had put roughly 130 cycles on the lift — a mix of quick lifts for oil changes and longer holds for the exhaust and driveline projects. Cables were still in adjustment. Cylinders showed no weeping. Anchor bolts got a torque check and were still at spec. The only wear we noted was slight polishing on the safety lock ladder teeth where engagement had worked them, which is normal and not a wear-out condition.
We did shift one item on the next-year list: the collector wanted to add rolling jacks to enable wheel-off work without the truck-adapter setup.
