Why a Council Bluffs mobile tech moved into a fixed bay

The tech we worked with had been running mobile out of a service van for four years, with tire rotations and brake jobs making up most of the weekly work. Council Bluffs winters and Iowa’s spring mud season kept eating driveway appointments, and jackstand work on uneven customer concrete had turned into a constant liability worry. A small leased bay opened up near the I-29 corridor, and the math on fifteen tire rotations a week suddenly favored a fixed spot with a lift. A two-post configuration made the most sense because the tech still wanted to pull cars in and out fast, without the drive-on footprint of a four-post eating the bay.

Capacity was the first conversation. Most of the daily work is passenger vehicles and half-ton trucks, so a 10,000 lb machine covered every job on the schedule without paying for capacity that would sit unused. We walked through symmetric versus asymmetric arms, because tire work with symmetric arms keeps you moving around the wheel from either side, while asymmetric arms open the door for cabin access on longer jobs like brake bleeds. The tech chose an asymmetric two-post for the mix, and we started the paperwork on freight. Freight for automotive two post lifts: where the surprises hide

Freight on automotive two post lifts is almost never as simple as we will ship it out. A palletized two-post from our warehouse to Council Bluffs runs on a standard 53-foot dry van, but the palletized load is heavy, awkwardly balanced, and typically arrives without a driver who is willing to operate a liftgate for something that heavy. That means either the receiver has a dock, a forklift, or a plan. We built a freight quote with a lift-gate option and a residential-style delivery flag because the leased bay had neither dock nor forklift, and the driver still needed a clear approach to back in without threading between parked cars.

The surprise was not the freight itself, but the appointment window. Our mobile tech was on a scheduled job that morning and almost missed the call. Site survey: the bay we were actually working with

Before the freight was booked, we did a phone-and-photos site survey of the Council Bluffs bay. The space was 24 feet deep, 14 feet wide, with a nominal 14-foot ceiling that measured closer to 13 feet 6 inches once we accounted for the door track and a low-hanging conduit run. Four inches is the manufacturer minimum for most 10K two-posts, but it is not generous, and we recommended a core sample to verify. The tech had a friend pull a small core with a rented bit, and we confirmed a full four-plus inches with no voids under the mounting locations. If the sample had come back thin, the plan would have shifted to either a slab overlay or a different lift configuration entirely, and we would rather find that out before the truck rolls than after. Overhead versus baseplate for a tire-heavy workflow

For a shop doing tire rotation and wheel work at volume, the overhead-versus-baseplate decision often comes down to what you trip over. Baseplate two-posts route the equalizer cables through a floor plate that runs between the columns, and while modern designs keep that plate reasonably low-profile, it is still a bump you drag tire dollies over dozens of times a day. Overhead two-posts route the equalizer overhead in a bar above the vehicle, which keeps the floor clean and gives dollies and jacks a flat surface to work on all shift long.

The tradeoff is ceiling height, which we already had a plan for. We chose overhead because the wheel-work volume made a clean floor worth the tighter clearance. The other quiet advantage of overhead for this workflow is the shutoff bar itself: it stops the lift before the highest point of a raised vehicle contacts the ceiling, which turns a potentially expensive mistake into a soft stop. For a tech who is usually alone in the bay, that safety margin matters. Automotive two post lifts with overhead configurations tend to cost slightly more than the baseplate equivalent from the same manufacturer, but for tire and wheel workflows we recommend absorbing that delta every time. Forklift day: how the actual unload went

The tech rented a five-ton forklift from a local equipment yard for the delivery day, at a half-day rate. The truck arrived on the promised window, the driver dropped the ramp, and the forklift pulled the palletized columns off the trailer in two lifts. The powerpack and arm assemblies came off on a third lift on a lighter pallet. Total offload was under thirty minutes, and the rental forklift went back that afternoon. We had suggested budgeting a full day for the unload because things go sideways when they go sideways, and the tech was glad to have overbudgeted the time instead of underbudgeted it and scrambled for help.

One detail worth calling out for anyone else planning a curbside unload of automotive two post lifts: the pallet balance is not intuitive. The columns pack heavy on the bottom, and the pallet’s center of gravity is not the geometric center. If your forklift operator lifts from what looks like the middle, the pallet will tilt as it clears the trailer bed. Our tech’s operator was experienced enough to feel that shift and reposition the forks, but a less experienced driver could have tipped it. We now include a photo diagram of the pallet balance in every freight-plan email we send out, because the ten seconds of prep is worth a lot of stress avoided.

First month of tire rotation and wheel work

Once the lift was installed and the tech had run the manufacturer’s break-in cycles, the first month of production told the real story. Tire rotations that used to take 35 to 45 minutes on jackstands settled into a comfortable 20-minute rhythm, and the tech started stacking wheel-alignment prep and brake inspections into the same window. Wheel-off jobs like bearing service, which had been a full-day nightmare on the driveway, became a half-day service the tech could quote confidently. Automotive two post lifts do that to a mobile-to-brick transition: they compress every wheel job by at least a third and often more.

We stayed in touch during that first month because that is when small issues surface. The tech called on week three about a slight drift in the equalizer cable tension, which is normal on new cables as they seat under load, and we walked through the adjustment on the phone in about ten minutes. The lift settled in after that, and we scheduled a 90-day parts check where we verified anchor torque, cable tension, and hydraulic reservoir level. Everything came in on spec. First month revenue on the tire and wheel line more than covered the monthly bay lease, which was the single number the tech had been watching from day one of the move.

What we would change if we did it again

Looking back at the whole project, the biggest thing we would change is the delivery-day communication window. We now tell every receiver of automotive two post lifts that the terminal call is the make-or-break moment, and we ask for an emergency contact on the paperwork so the terminal has a second number to reach if the primary receiver is under a car. The Council Bluffs job worked out fine, but we came close to a rebooked delivery for reasons that had nothing to do with the lift itself. Small process fixes upstream save real money downstream.

The second thing is the site-survey photo checklist. We now request specific photos: the ceiling with a tape measure held against the lowest hanging obstruction, the slab edge if visible, the door swing at fully open, and the electrical panel with any breaker labels visible.
