Two independent pro shop owners in the Iowa Great Lakes region asked us the same question within a month of each other last year: which of these automotive two post lifts is actually going to hold up under a wheel bearing service load? Both shops did a lot of front-end work, both had crews of three techs, and both had roughly the same daily car count. We ended up installing a Rotary SPO10 symmetric overhead in one shop and a Challenger CL10 asymmetric overhead in the other, and a year later we can tell you exactly what each choice meant on the floor. Two shops, two configurations, one honest comparison

The shop in Spirit Lake ran mostly domestic trucks and older pickups, with wheel bearings on Silverado and F-150 half-tons making up two or three jobs a week. The shop closer to Okoboji ran a mix that skewed more European and later-model crossovers, with a fair number of Subaru and Volkswagen wheel bearing services in the mix. Both shops had ceilings in the 12 to 13 foot range and slabs that measured out at just over four inches with visible rebar in the core samples we pulled. Both bays were the right size for a standard 10,000 lb two-post with a little breathing room on either side.

The Spirit Lake shop went with a Rotary SPO10 in the symmetric overhead configuration. The Okoboji shop chose a Challenger CL10 in the asymmetric overhead configuration. Both machines are ALI Gold certified, both use overhead equalizer routing, and both have the same nominal 10,000 lb capacity. The differences that mattered showed up in the arm geometry, not the specs. If you are cross-shopping automotive two post lifts on paper, the spec sheets will lie to you a little; the arm geometry and how it fits your typical vehicle mix is what really drives daily productivity. The one-year followup made that clear.

Configuration A: symmetric arms and wheel access

The Rotary SPO10 symmetric layout puts the columns directly opposite each other, and the arm reach is the same on both sides of the vehicle. For the Spirit Lake shop, that turned out to be a good fit for the truck-heavy mix. Half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickups load evenly on a symmetric machine, and the techs there liked being able to slide under from either side without thinking about which arm was longer. Wheel bearing service specifically benefits from symmetric arms when you are pulling both front hubs, because you can walk the tools around the vehicle without the arm asymmetry sending your reach off.

Where symmetric arms cost you a little is door swing. On a modern crew-cab pickup, the front door has to clear the rear column, and with a symmetric two-post the driver-side door on a long-cab truck can bump the column before it is fully open. The Spirit Lake techs adapted by pulling trucks in with the driver door already cracked, which is a workaround, not a fix. For automotive two post lifts in a truck-heavy shop, symmetric arms are still our default recommendation, but we tell owners up front that crew-cab door swing is the tradeoff. Nobody there wanted to switch after six months, and after twelve they were confident it was the right call.

Configuration B: asymmetric arms and cabin entry

The Challenger CL10 asymmetric setup rotates the columns slightly so that the front arms are shorter than the rear arms, and the vehicle sits a little further back on the lift. That geometry lets the driver door open past the column even on longer cars and crossovers, which was exactly what the Okoboji shop needed for their mix. Techs there could get in and out of a raised vehicle without hunching under the column, and on brake and wheel jobs where a tech pops in to release the parking brake or move the steering wheel, the door clearance saves real minutes.

Asymmetric automotive two post lifts do ask you to think about vehicle placement more carefully. If a tech pulls a truck onto the machine without noticing which arms are the short ones, the load balance can end up off, and while modern asymmetrics have generous tolerance built in, best practice is to spot the vehicle correctly every time. The Okoboji shop trained their crew on the geometry in about two hours and never had a placement problem after week one. Wheel bearing service on their late-model crossovers, especially the ones with tight fender arch clearance, was noticeably faster than the same job on a symmetric machine because the tech could work with the door fully open.

Freight logistics on both installs

Both shops took delivery of their automotive two post lifts on standard 53-foot dry vans out of our Midwest hub. The Spirit Lake install came in on a Tuesday morning at a shop with a dock that made unloading straightforward, and we had columns off the truck in twelve minutes. The Okoboji install did not have a dock, and the owner rented a five-ton forklift for the half day, mirroring what we recommend to every shop without indoor material-handling equipment. Neither delivery had a lift-gate on the truck; both were forklift-off, which is our default for anything this heavy because liftgates rated for 4,000 pounds are rare and slow when you find them.

The lesson from both freights was consistent: automotive two post lifts freight faster and cleaner when the receiving shop has a plan two days ahead of the truck. We now send a delivery checklist by email 48 hours before the appointment window, and both shops confirmed the checklist made the day easier. Wheel bearing service on each machine, side by side

Six months into ownership, we asked both shops to time a standard front wheel bearing service on a comparable vehicle: a 2018 half-ton pickup for Spirit Lake and a 2019 crossover for Okoboji. Both shops used the same tech, both used similar tools, and both had the vehicle spotted and raised within four minutes of pulling in. Spirit Lake’s symmetric SPO10 got the truck to working height in 42 seconds; Okoboji’s asymmetric CL10 hit working height in 45 seconds. Cycle times are essentially identical between the two configurations, which is what we expected from the paper specs.

Where the two shops diverged was in the tool-swap dance. Spirit Lake’s symmetric layout made it easy to leave a tool cart on either side of the vehicle without blocking the door. Okoboji’s asymmetric layout let the tech leave the driver door open the entire job, which meant he could climb in to steer the wheel for pinion checks without stopping. Both are legitimate advantages depending on the mix of work. If you are choosing between automotive two post lifts and your shop skews heavy pickup, symmetric is fine; if you skew car and crossover with a lot of cabin access, asymmetric is worth the small setup discipline it demands.

Cost delta and long-term parts stocking

The two lifts landed within a few percent of each other on invoice. Rotary and Challenger both price their 10K overhead two-posts in a similar band, and the freight came in comparable because both shipped from the same regional pool. Parts stocking is where the year of ownership taught us something. The Spirit Lake shop needed a new set of adapter pads at month eight because a tech had chewed one up on a rusty pinch weld; we shipped from our Iowa parts inventory next-day. The Okoboji shop replaced an equalizer cable at month eleven as a proactive service item, and again the part was in stock in Ames.

The point for anyone comparing automotive two post lifts on price alone is that parts availability matters more over five years than the invoice does. Both Rotary and Challenger have strong parts pipelines through us, and both shops confirmed they would buy the same brand again if they were opening a second bay. If you are looking at an off-brand two-post that is a few hundred dollars cheaper, ask the seller how quickly they can ship a replacement cable, a slack cable switch, or a lock pawl. If the answer is anything other than a specific day, you are buying a longer downtime problem when the part fails, and it will fail eventually.

Which configuration we would recommend to a wheel-focused shop

For a shop that spends most of its week on wheel-heavy work, our honest recommendation looks at your vehicle mix first and your bay layout second. Truck-heavy mixes with regular half-ton and three-quarter-ton work do well on symmetric automotive two post lifts because the load balance is even and the arms reach the pickup points cleanly. Car and crossover mixes, especially anything with tight fender wells or short overhangs, benefit meaningfully from asymmetric arms because the door swing pays dividends every job. Neither is objectively better; they are optimized for different fleets.
