The collector’s dilemma in northwest Iowa
The three vehicles were a 1970s muscle car, a European sports sedan from the early 2000s, and a modern truck used for towing and daily driving. The shop was a 30-by-40 pole barn addition to the main garage, heated with a wood stove and an overhead radiant tube, with a poured slab that had gone in about eight years earlier when the barn was built. The collector wanted to lift the sports sedan for storage over each winter, and to work on any of the three whenever weather permitted. That combination pointed clearly at a two-post rather than a four-post because he did not want to drive under a stored car and the two-post footprint left more usable floor space.
He had been looking at automotive two post lifts online for a few months and was leaning toward a 10,000 lb overhead machine with symmetric arms. That was a reasonable starting point, but the real question was whether the slab would take an anchor properly, and whether the ceiling in a pole barn with a truss overhang would clear the shutoff bar. Slab evaluation: 4-inch versus 6-inch pours
The pole barn slab had been poured at a nominal four inches by the contractor at the time, which is at the edge of what manufacturers specify for a 10K two-post. We pulled a core sample near one of the intended column locations and found four and a quarter inches of concrete over compacted gravel, with visible aggregate distribution but no rebar or wire mesh in the sample. That is technically acceptable for automotive two post lifts of this capacity, but a four-inch slab with no rebar has limited redundancy if a single anchor pulls, so we walked through options.
Option one was to install as-is with wedge anchors and trust the concrete depth. Option two was to install with chemical epoxy anchors, which distribute load across a larger volume of concrete and grip better in unreinforced slabs. Option three was to overlay the column footprints with a fresh six-inch pour tied to the existing slab with rebar. The collector chose option two because it added modest cost, kept the install on schedule, and gave measurably better anchor holding on unreinforced concrete. This is the choice we recommend on most older slabs where a rebar core sample comes back light. Epoxy anchors are worth their price on any slab you have doubts about.
Rebar and post-tension considerations
Modern residential slabs sometimes use post-tension cables instead of traditional rebar reinforcement, and drilling anchors into a post-tension slab can be extremely dangerous because a cut cable releases significant tension. This is more common in southern states and in newer subdivisions than in a northwest Iowa pole barn, but we always ask the question during the site survey. Our collector’s slab was straightforward rebar-free unreinforced concrete, which meant we could drill for anchors without worry, and we confirmed that by looking at the original barn contractor’s drawings.

Cutting a live post-tension cable is a serious injury risk. Install day and anchor torque
The install happened on a mild November day, with our two-person crew setting the columns, running the epoxy anchors, and torqueing everything to Rotary’s published specification. Epoxy anchors need a specific dwell time before you can torque them, which meant the install took a few hours longer than a wedge anchor install would have, but the collector had planned for it. We ran the lift through its unloaded break-in cycles that afternoon, verified the equalizer cable tension, and walked the collector through the first raised cycle with the muscle car as our test vehicle.
The most important thing that happens on install day for automotive two post lifts is the anchor torque check with a calibrated wrench. Every manufacturer publishes a torque spec for its anchors, and hitting that value matters. Under-torqued anchors will loosen over cycles as the concrete compresses and the anchor’s grip settles. Over-torqued anchors can crack the concrete around the bolt and lose grip permanently. First winter: how the lift held the stored vehicle
The sports sedan went up on the lift in mid-November and stayed there through the end of March. Storing a vehicle on a two-post for months at a time is a legitimate use case, but it requires attention to detail. The safety locks must be engaged, not just the hydraulic pressure holding the vehicle up. For long-term storage, the vehicle sits on the mechanical locks with the hydraulic pressure fully bled off.
The collector checked the sedan monthly through the winter, walking around the raised vehicle and looking for anything that had shifted. Nothing had. The lift held the vehicle at exactly the height where we set it in November, and the safety locks stayed firmly engaged. His main worry going into the storage cycle was whether the cold shop temperature would affect the seals or hoses; both stayed pliable through a stretch of sub-zero nights because the shop’s radiant heat kept the base ambient temperature above freezing. Storing on a lift in an unheated shop is a different conversation and generally not recommended for extended periods.
Spring service and cable inspection
When we came out for the 90-day check in early spring, the priorities were anchor torque, equalizer cable tension, and safety lock function. Anchors held their torque with no measurable loosening. The equalizer cable had settled a touch as new cables always do, and we adjusted the tension back into the middle of the manufacturer’s spec range. Safety locks engaged crisply on all positions with no hesitation. The hydraulic reservoir was full within a normal range with no leaks visible at any fitting.
The collector had a specific question about cable inspection: how do you know when a cable is worn enough to replace. The answer is that manufacturers publish a set of inspection criteria including visible wire breaks, corrosion, kinking, and diameter reduction, and if any of those criteria fail, the cable comes out. On a low-cycle collector’s lift like this one, cables typically last many years before hitting a replacement threshold. On a high-cycle tire shop, cables can wear meaningfully faster. Year one lessons for storage users
The biggest lesson from the collector’s first year was that storing a vehicle on automotive two post lifts is not set-and-forget, but it also is not high-maintenance.
