It is a fair question, because the trap on a farm shop lift is the used marketplace one that looks like a steal until the seals blow six months in and no rebuild kit exists. Cylinder architecture is the whole ballgame
Ninety percent of car lift automotive failures we get called out to fix are cylinder failures. The tube itself almost never fails — the seals do. So the first thing on the checklist is: does the manufacturer publish a service manual with seal kit part numbers? If you cannot find a rebuild kit sold under the brand’s own part number, walk away. That is the number one tell that a lift is disposable. Every Rotary, Challenger, Forward, and BendPak we ship has a documented seal kit with dimensions listed to the tenth of a millimeter, and every one of those kits sits on our shelf in Ames.
Second question — is the cylinder chrome-plated or bare steel with a paint coat? Chrome plating is the standard on any lift that will run for twenty years in an unheated Iowa shop. Bare steel with paint over it will pit the first winter the humidity gets into the barrel, and once the rod is pitted, no seal kit in the world will keep it dry. When you look at a car lift automotive spec sheet, the phrase you want to see is ground and hard chrome-plated rod. If that phrase is missing, ask why.
Duty cycle and single-cylinder vs dual-cylinder designs
On a two-post lift, you get either dual synchronized cylinders (one in each column) or a single cylinder with equalizer cables. For a farm shop that will do maybe two hundred lift cycles a year, either design works fine for decades. If you plan to run a small commercial side business, the dual-cylinder direct-drive designs like the Rotary SPO series are worth the upgrade — no cable stretch, no cable replacement every ten years. On a four-post, the single-cylinder-with-cables design is universal and rock solid; do not overthink it.
Where farm shops trip over themselves is thinking they need commercial-duty. You do not. A homeowner-grade car lift automotive install can absolutely serve a working farm as long as the cylinder is rebuildable and the arms have the reach for your combine wheels or dually pickup. What matters is that when the seals do finally go, the kit is a phone call away — not a scrap-and-replace decision.
Reach, height, and the combine wheel problem
An Iowa farm shop does more than pickups. Sooner or later a combine wheel comes off, or a grain cart tire needs to be pulled, or a skid steer bucket needs work at chest height. The car lift automotive spec sheet number that matters here is arm reach — specifically the minimum retracted length of the front arm and the maximum extended reach of the rear arm. A three-stage arm on a Rotary SPO12 gives you enough range to catch a Miata pinch weld at one end and a Kubota utility tractor at the other, all on the same lift.
Rise height is the second number. Farm shop ceilings are often twelve feet or better, but check anyway — the drive-through height at the top of a two-post is typically twelve feet six inches, and you need at least a foot of clearance above that. If your ceiling is eleven feet or less, you want a low-ceiling variant, which most brands offer with an offset overhead cross-tube. Skipping this check is one of the more expensive mistakes we watch farm shops make when they buy from a big-box catalog without measuring first.
Concrete, anchors, and the frost line
Every car lift automotive install lives or dies on the concrete underneath it. For a two-post in the 9K to 12K class, you need a minimum four-inch slab at 3,000 psi. Most Iowa farm shops built in the last thirty years have a five or six-inch slab already — dig up the drawings if you have them, or drill a test hole in a corner to check. Anchors that go into a thin slab will pull under load, and the failure mode is spectacular. We saw one shop near Iowa City lose a column because the slab was three inches with rebar only in the perimeter.
The other Iowa gotcha is the frost line. If your shop slab was poured over disturbed ground without a proper base, it can heave in a cold winter. A heaved slab will bend a two-post column subtly enough that the safety latches stop dropping evenly, and the fix is expensive. If you are pouring a new slab for the lift, spec it at six inches with a full mat of rebar and a proper compacted base of at least six inches of clean stone. Do it right once and forget about it for a generation.
Rebuild kits, seal parts, and the twenty-year parts question
Here is the checklist item most farm shop owners forget until it is too late — is the brand still around, and does it still stock parts? Rotary, Challenger, and Forward have been in continuous production for decades and stock parts back a very long way. We can get seal kits for Rotary SPO cylinders sold in the 1990s, still under the original part number. That kind of parts pipeline is worth real money over a twenty-year ownership window. The disposable import brands that dominate marketplace listings will be out of business or on their third rebrand by the time your seals go, and no kit will fit.

Freight, install, and the DIY question
Plenty of Iowa farm shop owners do their own installs. It is not rocket science — if you have run a forklift, poured concrete, and wired 240V, you can install a two-post in a weekend with one helper. What you cannot skip is the anchor torque spec and the shakedown cycles. The failure mode of an under-torqued wedge anchor is a column tipping toward the vehicle, and the shakedown cycles are what catch a bad hydraulic fitting before a real vehicle is on it.
