Configuration A: A 10,000-lb Symmetric Two-Post
The workhorse configuration for a high-volume oil-service bay is a 10,000-lb symmetric two-post with three-stage front arms, two-stage rear arms, and a low-profile 3.5-inch pad drop so you can slide it under a low-clearance Camry without wrestling a pinch weld adapter. Rise to full is roughly 45 seconds. Drop to floor is roughly 25 seconds. That means a full lift cycle costs you a little over a minute of technician time per oil change, and at forty oil changes a week that is a real amount of throughput margin.

Configuration B: A Scissor Lift at Floor Level

The pitch is that it lives inside the bay footprint, does not need column anchoring across the whole slab, and folds down to nearly flush. There is truth to that. A scissor can drop into a mid-bay position, take a car at four wheels or at pad points, and lift it clear enough for an oil pan and filter without needing overhead column clearance.
The problem for the Urbandale shop was time-per-cycle. A full-rise scissor takes roughly 90 seconds to top out compared with 45 on the two-post, and the drive-on styles cost you three to four extra tech steps per cycle to align the ramps. The order in which you build out an oil-service bay changes what lift options remain open. If you pour the slab first, then run the overhead electrical and air lines, then bring the lift in last, you constrain the lift choice to whatever fits under and around what you already installed. If you sequence it the way we recommend, you decide on the lift first, then run electrical and air on the lift’s own dimensions, then finish the slab detail work last. For oil work specifically, the two dimensions that matter most are the maximum arm-pad rise and the minimum arm-pad drop. Maximum rise controls how comfortably the tech works under the vehicle. Anything less than 68 inches of pad rise puts a six-foot tech in a permanent stoop, which produces bad drain-plug torque and shoulder injuries. Minimum drop controls whether you can slide the pads under a low car without breaking a pinch weld. Anything more than 4 inches of stow height rules out modern low-clearance sedans without a chock kit.

On top of that we added a set of frame-cradle stacking blocks for the trucks, because a stock swing-arm pad on a 2500 running lift kits rides too low against the frame rail. Small details like that separate a lift install that helps your throughput from one that becomes a daily annoyance the moment the seller drives away.
The Cost Math Over 24 Months
Ranges only, no exact dollars: a proper ALI Gold 10,000-lb symmetric two-post lands in the low-to-mid four figures for the lift, plus low four figures for install into a good slab. Add a few hundred for anchor-pad concrete work if your floor needs it. Add a few hundred for the air kit, the overhead reel, and stacking blocks. A comparable full-rise scissor with drive-on ramps and an in-ground pit-liner runs about the same for the lift itself but costs more to install because of the pit work.
