A third-generation family garage south of Nevada, Iowa called us last spring about replacing their thirty-year-old two-post with a modern car lift automotive setup that would carry them another twenty years and also let them store the owner’s father’s restored Chevelle over each winter without unbolting the arms. The grandfather taught the current owner on that old lift, and the sentimental piece was real. But the arm-restraint gear was chewed smooth, the safety cams only clicked at three of the twelve positions they should, and the old hydraulic power unit was leaking. It was time. Arm-Restraint Gears: How They Actually Work

The arm restraint is the small toothed gear ring around the swing-arm pivot at the base of each column. When you lift the pad to contact the vehicle and start pumping the hydraulic system, spring-loaded pins drop into that gear and lock the arm at whatever rotational position it is in. The vehicle cannot swing the arm out from under itself because the arm physically cannot rotate. When you lower the lift all the way down and take the load off, the pins retract and you can reposition. That is the entire system in one paragraph.

What kills them is contamination and abuse. Shop dust, grinding grit, and dropped tools chew the gear teeth. Owners who tap the pads with a hammer to reset a slipped arm bend the retract mechanism. On this central Iowa garage the gear had been ground so smooth by thirty years of daily engagement that the pins skated across the top rather than dropping. We replaced both pivot assemblies with new OEM parts on the new car lift automotive install and gave the owner a two-minute weekly cleaning routine. If yours are worn, they are not optional to fix.

Safety Cams: Every Click Should Be Audible

Safety cams are the mechanical backup to your hydraulic system. Inside each column, a spring-loaded pawl rides against a toothed rack. As the carriage rises, the pawl clicks over each tooth. Every click is a hard stop the vehicle could rest on if the hydraulic cylinder failed at that instant. On a properly working two-post you should hear roughly one click every three to four inches of rise, both columns almost synchronized. If you hear one column clicking twice for every click on the other column, your cables are stretched and you have a level-of-rise problem that needs adjusted before you lift anything else.

The old lift on this Iowa job clicked only at the very top of travel because the pawl springs had lost tension and the pawls had worn convex. It looked like it worked. It did not. If the cylinder had blown a seal at mid-rise there was nothing to catch the vehicle short of the column stop at the top. Real Dimensions: Rise, Drive-Through, and Ceiling Clearance

The dimensions that determine whether a car lift automotive will actually work in your building are, in order: overhead clearance from slab to lowest obstruction, drive-through width between columns, maximum arm-pad rise from slab, and slab-to-carriage clearance at rest. For a mixed home-and-work garage doing central Iowa vehicles from a Miata up to a Silverado 2500, we specify a two-post with 12-foot overall column height, 100 to 108 inches of drive-through between columns, and a pad rise of 74 to 78 inches.

A 12-foot column needs a 12-foot 6-inch bay ceiling minimum, and you want to add another 4 inches if you plan to run overhead trolleys, air lines, or drop-down reels between the columns. Drive-through matters because a modern dually or a wide-body Tahoe on 35s will scrape a 96-inch drive-through. Pad rise matters because you have to be able to stand fully upright under the rocker of a lifted truck to torque a bolt. On the family garage in this story we specified 108-inch drive-through and 78-inch pad rise because the son had already told us he was buying his dad a Bronco next year.

Cable Equalization and How to Read Its Wear

Symmetric and asymmetric two-post lifts equalize the two carriages with steel cables running through sheaves at the top and bottom of each column. The cables are not there to lift the vehicle. The cylinder does that. The cables are only there to guarantee that both carriages travel at the same rate so the vehicle stays level. But if a cable frays, the level-of-rise drifts, the arm restraints load unevenly, and the safety cams engage out of phase. That is a compounding failure.

Every three to six months, walk each cable end where it exits its socket and look for broken strands, kinks, or rust bloom. If you see even one broken strand at either end, the cable is done. Replace both cables as a pair, never one at a time, or you will get uneven stretch and a permanent level-of-rise offset. A new car lift automotive comes with fresh cables, but if you inherit an older lift, budget a cable inspection every quarter and a full cable replacement every seven to ten years of daily service. Winter Storage Loads: What Changes When a Lift Sits

Owners who use a lift for seasonal vehicle storage rarely think about what changes mechanically when a car sits at full rise for four months instead of forty minutes. Hydraulic seals compress under continuous load and can take a set. Safety cams hold the load rather than the cylinder, which is exactly what they are designed for, but it means the pawls are under constant spring load and can wear a flat spot on the tooth they rest on. Cables under sustained tension stretch a small permanent amount over the winter.

None of this is a reason not to store on a lift. All of it is a reason to buy a car lift automotive rated for that use and to service it in the spring before you cycle it under a new vehicle. When you drop the stored vehicle in April, get down to full lower, rest for ten minutes, then re-cycle to full rise empty and lower again while you watch and listen for irregular cam clicks or uneven cable pay-out. Hydraulic Power Unit and Fluid: The Boring Piece That Matters

Most owners think about the columns and the arms. Almost no one thinks about the power unit until it stops working. But the power unit is the heart of the lift, and it is the component that most often fails on a lift older than fifteen years. Modern units run a 220-volt single-phase or three-phase motor, an integrated reservoir of 2 to 4 gallons of automotive-grade hydraulic fluid, a solenoid-controlled lowering valve, and a manual release. That release is what lets you lower a lift with power out at your bay, and it is worth knowing where it is before you need it.

Fluid changes once every three years for a shop lift, once every five years for a light home lift, using ISO 32 or ISO 46 hydraulic oil, never automatic transmission fluid regardless of what your grandfather told you. On the family garage in this story the old fluid was black and had a burned smell, which meant the seals inside the cylinder had been failing for years.
