A heavy-duty truck shop owner near the Iowa Great Lakes region called us in early spring wanting a real cost breakdown for a car lift automotive install. He was planning to add a bay dedicated to differential fluid service on medium-duty trucks and needed to know the full sticker-to-running cost before committing. What he was not getting from the online suppliers he had been talking to was any real numbers on install prep, freight to the northwest corner of Iowa, and the site survey work that always adds cost on a heavy-duty install. This walkthrough is the actual line-item breakdown we built for him, so any other shop owner in northwest Iowa can use the same framework.

The Site Survey: Why It Comes First

Before we quote any car lift automotive install for a heavy-duty shop, we do a site survey. For a customer in the Iowa Great Lakes region, that survey is either a drive out (about 3.5 hours from Ames) or a detailed video walkthrough by phone. On a two-post install it takes about 45 minutes; on a mobile column install for a medium-duty truck bay it takes about 90 minutes because we need to check the slab across the full working area, not just under the columns.

The survey covers slab thickness, slab PSI, ceiling height across the full lift travel, door clearance for the tallest expected truck, electrical panel capacity and available circuit, drainage slope on the floor (a big deal for wet-work bays), and the truck approach path from the door to the lift bay. For a medium-duty truck differential service bay, the approach path is critical because you cannot maneuver a 26-foot straight truck around a tight interior corner. A car lift automotive install survey typically identifies two to five items that will add cost or need remediation before install. Better to know them before signing the purchase order.

Base Lift Cost and Configuration

For his use case, we spec’d a set of four mobile column lifts each rated at 18,500 lb, giving a combined lift capacity of 74,000 lb. That is enough for any medium-duty truck up through Class 7 and most Class 8 highway tractors bobtail. The columns run on rechargeable batteries or plug-in power depending on model, and they synchronize wirelessly so all four lift together.

Base cost for a set of four mobile columns from a tier-one commercial brand runs in the mid-to-upper five figures. That is a real number and it is what serious heavy-duty shops spend. Compared to a fixed installed heavy-duty lift, mobile columns cost more up-front but give you the flexibility to move the lift to different bays or to use it for a range of vehicle sizes. For a shop doing differential fluid service on a mix of vehicle configurations, mobile columns are usually the right pick. The car lift automotive purchase decision for a heavy-duty shop is more about capacity and flexibility than pure sticker; the wrong configuration costs far more in rework than the right one costs up front.

Freight to Northwest Iowa

Freight to the Iowa Great Lakes region on a set of four mobile columns runs meaningfully higher than to Ames or Des Moines. The pallets are heavy (each column is around 1,400 lb), the truck route from the manufacturer plant is longer, and LTL rates to less-served zip codes carry a fuel and mileage upcharge.

For this install we quoted freight at about three times what a same-order two-post to central Iowa would cost. That is a real cost that online sellers often bury in the fine print. We break it out on the quote so the shop owner can see it and decide whether to bundle their delivery with another Iowa customer we happen to be shipping to the same week. Twice last year we saved customers in northwest Iowa about 30 percent on freight by consolidating their delivery with a Storm Lake or Spencer install we already had scheduled. This kind of coordination is why buying a car lift automotive setup from a regional installer beats ordering from a national online catalog: we can share truckload rates, we can coordinate delivery windows, and we know the northwest Iowa freight terminals well enough to route around the ones that lose shipments.

Slab Testing and Anchor Installation

His existing shop bay was 12 years old, poured as a truck bay, and rated to 5,000 PSI on the paperwork. We tested the slab thickness with a rebar locator and found a consistent 6 inches with #4 rebar on 16-inch centers. That is well within spec for the mobile column anchors, and no remediation was needed.

Where slab remediation would have added cost is if the bay had been an older 4-inch pour with no rebar. In that case, we would have needed to saw-cut and pour footing pads under each column position. That runs meaningfully into the four-figure range in materials and labor per pad. For a set of four mobile columns, that would have been a significant unplanned cost. This is exactly why the site survey happens before the purchase order. We have seen buyers commit to a car lift automotive purchase online and only discover the slab problem when the crew arrives to install. That is a bad day. The survey catches it.

Electrical, Charger, and Circuit Requirements

Mobile column lifts run on rechargeable battery packs. Each column needs a charger and a 110 volt or 220 volt outlet within reach of the parked column position. His shop had 110 volt outlets on every wall, which was fine, but we recommended installing four dedicated 20-amp circuits so all four column chargers could run simultaneously without tripping breakers.

Total electrical cost for a shop of that size was in the low four-figure range, all-in. If the shop had been on an older panel with no available circuits, a subpanel upgrade would have added more. Every car lift automotive install has some electrical component; on mobile columns it is charging infrastructure, on two-posts it is a dedicated 220 volt circuit, on four-post drive-ons it is similar. We include the electrical spec on the quote so the shop can get their electrician bidding it before the install date. Install Labor and Timeline

The install itself for a set of four mobile columns takes about one day for our two-tech crew including uncrating, initial charge cycle, function testing, and a full sync-test with a truck on the columns. Install labor for a Great Lakes region trip is billed at our standard commercial rate plus travel to and from the site.

Total install labor including travel was in the low four figures. We can sometimes reduce travel cost by scheduling adjacent installs the same week, but on standalone trips to the northwest corner it is what it is. What we do not do is skip the function-test and full-cycle validation to save a couple of hours; that is where safety incidents happen years later. Every car lift automotive install we do gets a written function-test log with the customer signature, which the customer keeps for their insurance and OSHA records. This documentation is worth more than the labor cost the day something goes wrong.

Total Cost and What He Actually Paid

The final all-in cost for his install was: base lift set (mid-upper five figures), freight (mid four figures), slab prep (none needed after survey), electrical (low four figures), install labor and travel (low four figures), anchor kit (low three figures), and first-year service package (mid three figures). Total delivered and running was well into six figures for a full heavy-duty mobile column setup.

That is real money for a small shop, but the payback runs about 18 to 30 months on the differential fluid service work he brought in-house. He had been outsourcing to a truck-focused shop three hours away, losing about 1.5 days per truck to transit and turnaround. In-house, each differential service now takes about 2 hours on the lift. Across his fleet and his shop customers, the labor savings alone paid the lift back inside two years. This is why we always run the ROI math with a heavy-duty buyer as part of the site survey.
