Car Lift Automotive Cost Breakdown for a Southern Minnesota Truck Shop

A heavy-duty truck shop owner in southern Minnesota called us last fall wanting a straight answer on a car lift automotive package sized for suspension and shock replacement on medium-duty pickups and the occasional Class 5 chassis cab. He had gotten three quotes from three different dealers and none of them added up the same way. We are Auto Lift Services out of Ames, Iowa, and we built him a total-cost breakdown that walked from freight through install through the expected trade-in value at year fifteen. This article is that breakdown, generalized so any southern Minnesota shop with the same use case can benchmark what a real number looks like.

Shop Heavy-Duty 2-Post Lifts →

Rotary and Challenger 18K, 20K, and 30K two-post lifts for suspension and drivetrain work — freight-shipped anywhere in the Midwest with ALI-Gold certification and a real service backbone.

Suspension work concentrates load like nothing else

Shock and spring work loads a lift differently than brake service. When the wheels are unloaded and the frame is on the arms, the vehicle’s dynamic center of mass shifts every time a spring is compressed or released. A car lift automotive setup that is undersized will flex under that dynamic load, and the arms will telegraph the flex to the safety latches — sometimes causing them to hang up mid-drop. For a shop that lives on medium-duty pickup suspension work, we spec at least an 18K two-post, and preferably a 20K if the shop sees any F550 or Ram 5500 chassis cab traffic.

The southern Minnesota shop was doing about seventy percent Super Duty and Silverado 3500 work, and thirty percent Class 4 and 5 medium-duty. That mix put him squarely in the 20K bracket. We recommended the Rotary SPO20, which has the arm reach for both platforms and the rise height to actually work standing up under a suspension. The Challenger CL20 is a solid alternative at a slightly lower price point but with less refined arm geometry — a real trade-off that matters when a tech is under the truck all day. Both are ALI-Gold certified.

Line-item freight and unload cost

Freight from our warehouse in Ames to a southern Minnesota shop is a single-day LTL run at a landed cost in the high three digits for a 20K crate. That is not a hidden fee — we quote it as a line item, and we book the carrier ourselves so the customer never has to negotiate with LTL brokers. The shop we worked with had a Bobcat with pallet forks, so unload was on the house, so to speak. If a shop lacks a forklift or Bobcat, we book lift-gate service and add a couple hundred dollars to the freight quote.

What we do not do is quote a rock-bottom freight number and then hit the customer with a fuel surcharge at the last minute. Every quote we send is landed — the number you see is the number that hits your bank account. That transparency matters when you are comparing car lift automotive quotes across dealers. Look for the phrase landed cost or freight included in the quote, and if you do not see it, ask specifically what the delivery number will be to your zip code. A dishonest freight quote is one of the oldest tricks in the equipment business.

Concrete and anchor line items

The southern Minnesota shop had a slab poured in 2008 to a five-inch spec with a good rebar mat. That is above the minimum for a 20K two-post and required no additional work. For a shop with a thinner or older slab, we usually recommend a saw-cut and pier pour at each column base — a $1,500 to $3,000 job for a competent commercial concrete crew, done in a day. That line item is easy to miss when comparing quotes because most lift dealers do not include it. We flag it in the site walkthrough before we send the final number.

Anchors themselves are a modest line item — a set of eight rated wedge anchors sized for the SPO20 is under two hundred dollars. What matters is that they are the right anchors for your slab thickness, and that they get torqued to spec. We include the anchor kit in every quote and we install with a calibrated torque wrench. If you are installing a car lift automotive package yourself, buy or rent a proper torque wrench and follow the manual. Guessing at anchor torque is a leading cause of column-tipping incidents in the ALI incident database.

Electrical, air, and infrastructure trueup

The 20K two-post runs on a single-phase 240V 30-amp circuit or a three-phase 208V 20-amp circuit. The Minnesota shop was on updated three-phase service, which is common for shops in the region, and the factory three-phase motor swap added a couple hundred dollars to the lift itself but eliminated a phase converter. If your shop is on rural single-phase, budget a fresh 30-amp circuit run from the main panel — usually a few hundred dollars in materials plus an electrician’s time.

Air lines for the safety latch air-lock system tap off shop air. Budget nothing for this if you already have air in the bay, or a couple hundred dollars for a drop from the ceiling if you do not. The trueup line most shops forget is the disconnect switch — code requires a fused disconnect within sight of the lift, and that is another modest but necessary line. When we quote a full car lift automotive install, we spell out the electrical spec so your electrician can quote from real numbers and not guess. Read our related piece on shop electrical planning.

Install labor and shakedown time

Our install crew charges a flat rate for a 20K two-post install in the southern Minnesota region — the number is in the low four figures and includes travel, uncrating, anchor drilling and setting, column raising, hydraulic and electrical hookup, and the first ten shakedown cycles. Total time on site is typically eight hours. We supply our own hammer drill, torque wrench, and lift straps. The shop only needs to provide a level slab, power access, and a clear bay.

Shops that want to do their own install save the install labor but take on the liability. If your team has done heavy equipment installs before and has the machines, it is a reasonable choice — we sell the lift install-not-included and support the DIY over the phone. If your team has never touched a lift before, pay us to install it. The install cost is a fraction of the lift, and having a licensed crew handle the anchoring and hydraulics means the ALI Gold certification is intact from day one. A car lift automotive that fails inspection because of a bad DIY install is worthless on trade-in.

Trade-in and resale value at year fifteen

Here is the line item most shops never consider — what is this lift worth to sell in fifteen years when the shop expands or the owner retires. An ALI-Gold Rotary SPO20 that has been maintained per the annual inspection schedule holds thirty to forty percent of its new value at fifteen years. An import-brand 20K of the same age is worth ten percent of new at fifteen years, if that. The resale value differential is real money, and it changes the total-cost math on a car lift automotive purchase substantially over the ownership window.

We buy back well-maintained Rotary and Challenger lifts from customers who are upgrading or closing, and we resell them with a fresh service inspection and a warranty. That secondary market gives every commercial customer a real exit option and keeps residual values honest. Compare that to import brands where the seal kit availability disappears in year seven and the resale market is basically scrap. When you total up the true fifteen-year cost, the name-brand lift is almost always cheaper. Call 800-674-9302 to talk through your specific numbers.
