Start With the Actual Work, Not the Wishlist
The first question we ask any restoration shop before a car lift automotive quote is the same one: what percentage of your work needs the wheels off? For this shop, the honest answer was about 80 percent. Wheel bearing repacks on 1960s and 1970s domestic iron. Brake shoe replacements on drum systems. Suspension teardowns for powder coating. Budget Tiers and What They Actually Get You
Restoration shops usually come in with a budget between the two natural tiers. Entry-level two-post lifts sit in a lower range that gets you a functional Chinese-import lift with a two-year warranty. Commercial-grade lifts from Rotary or Challenger sit in a higher tier with a longer warranty, deeper parts network, and a much stronger resale value if you sell the business. The gap between the two tiers is real, but so is the value difference.
For a restoration shop planning to keep the equipment for at least ten years, we point them to the commercial tier every time. A car lift automotive purchase for a business is not a consumer decision. It is a business asset that depreciates on the books and shows up on a bill of sale if you exit. A named-brand commercial lift with documented service history sells for meaningful money five to eight years in. A no-name import sells for scrap. Capacity: 10,000 lb, 12,000 lb, or Bigger?

The cost delta between 10,000 lb and 12,000 lb is small enough that we usually recommend 12,000 lb for anyone building a shop from scratch. It costs a few hundred to a thousand dollars more depending on brand and configuration, and it never limits you later. Going the other direction, from 10,000 lb up to 15,000 lb, gets meaningfully more expensive because you cross into a different frame size. If you know you will never touch a Class B RV or a heavy commercial truck, 12,000 lb is the sweet spot. If there is even a chance, quote both tiers and see the honest price gap.
Overhead Versus Floor Plate: The Restoration Question
This is where restoration shops diverge from general service shops. A standard two-post lift has an overhead crossbar between the columns. That crossbar carries the equalizer cable and the safety interlocks, and it works fine for most vehicles. But a restoration shop working on tall vehicles, or shops with a lower ceiling, may want a floor-plate model where the crossbar is at the base of the columns instead of overhead. A car lift automotive with a floor plate design frees up the vertical clearance entirely.
The tradeoff is that the floor plate covers the concrete between the columns, and if you routinely need to roll a tall transmission jack or engine hoist between the posts, a floor plate can be a tripping hazard. Arm Pads, Truck Adapters, and Wheel Bearing Access
Wheel bearing service on a classic car means you have the vehicle lifted with all four wheels off the ground. The lift arm pads have to sit on the correct factory frame pinch weld or lift point, and on a vintage vehicle those points are not always where a modern lift-pad chart says they should be. We recommend that any restoration shop invest in a full set of frame-cradle pads, rubber block adapters, and truck adapter extensions right from install day. The other detail is stack height. When you pad up a low-slung vintage vehicle to clear the exhaust or the frame rails, you burn some of your maximum rise. Installation, Anchoring, and Slab Verification

Resale Value Five Years Out
The final piece of the decision tree, and the one most restoration shops do not think about, is what the lift is worth if you sell the business or upgrade to a bigger space. Commercial-brand two-post lifts hold roughly 40 to 60 percent of their new value five years in, assuming documented service history and reasonable condition. A car lift automotive purchase from a no-name brand holds maybe 15 to 25 percent, and often less because buyers cannot get parts for it.
