Rotary SPO12: The Symmetric Standard

The Rotary SPO12 is a symmetric two-post lift with equal-length arms on both sides. Vehicle sits centered between the columns. Column-to-column drive-through clearance runs about 96 inches on the standard configuration, and the rise time from full down to full up is roughly 45 to 50 seconds. Direct drive hydraulic power unit, chain equalization overhead, and mechanical safety locks at multiple positions.

The SPO12’s strength is simplicity and durability. Fewer moving parts than an asymmetric lift, straightforward arm positioning, and a very deep parts pipeline through the Rotary distribution network. For a state inspection bay running a mixed vehicle roster, the SPO12 handles almost everything. Where it gets tight is on longer wheelbase vehicles like extended-cab pickups, where the front door can rub the column when opening. That is manageable if the tech positions carefully, but it is a workflow tax on every long-wheelbase vehicle that comes through. Challenger CL12: Versatile-Symmetric Design

The Challenger CL12 uses a versatile-symmetric arm design where the front arms are slightly shorter and the rear arms are slightly longer, but the columns are still positioned equidistantly. Vehicle sits slightly rearward of center between the columns. This geometry solves the door-clearance problem on longer-wheelbase vehicles because the driver’s door opens rearward of the column instead of directly next to it. Column-to-column drive-through clearance is similar to the SPO12 at about 98 inches, with comparable rise time and safety features.

The CL12’s advantage is workflow speed on high-vehicle-variety bays. State inspection work sees everything from a Honda Fit to a Ford F-250, and the versatile-symmetric geometry accommodates that range better than a pure symmetric. Where the CL12 is less differentiated is on pure short-wheelbase passenger cars, where the versatile geometry gains nothing over a symmetric layout. A car lift automotive purchase decision here is really about the vehicle mix. Long-wheelbase-heavy inspection lanes benefit more from the CL12 geometry than short-wheelbase-heavy lanes do.

Direct Compare: Arm Reach, Padding, and Adapters

The SPO12 arms extend to roughly 79 inches at maximum reach. The CL12 rear arms reach roughly 84 inches, front arms about 63 inches. That reach difference matters when a long-frame vehicle like a Ford F-250 crew cab needs the rear arms to reach past the rear axle. Both lifts include standard flip-up screw pads with rubber contact surfaces. Both accept the standard aftermarket truck adapter extensions if the shop services frame-height trucks regularly.

For state inspection work, we recommend that any shop invest in a full accessory pad kit with rubber slip-on pads, frame-cradle adapters, and 3-inch and 6-inch truck adapter extensions. Those accessories add a modest amount to the total car lift automotive purchase and dramatically improve daily workflow. A tech who has to hunt for the right pad on every vehicle is a tech losing five minutes per inspection. Multiply that by the day and by the year and the accessory kit pays for itself in a couple of months of throughput.

Direct Compare: Overhead Versus Floor Plate Options

Both the SPO12 and the CL12 come in overhead-crossbar and floor-plate variants. The Urbandale shop has 12-foot ceilings, which is tight for the tallest vehicles they inspect. That pushed the conversation toward the floor-plate variant on both lifts, because it removes the overhead crossbar and adds about 12 to 18 inches of usable vertical clearance depending on the specific model configuration. For a shop with taller ceilings, the overhead variant is often the better choice because it keeps the concrete between the columns clear.

A car lift automotive floor-plate variant does add a shallow crossbar at the base of the columns that runs the full width between them. It is a couple of inches high, painted safety yellow, and generally not a tripping hazard once techs get used to it. But if the shop routinely rolls tall equipment through the bay, a floor plate can be inconvenient. Challenger has been building since 1979 with a strong Midwest presence and equally solid parts availability. The Final Choice and the Reasoning

The floor-plate variant handled the 12-foot ceiling constraint. Total install time was six and a half hours from delivery to first inspection, and the first month of inspection throughput on the new lift was 20 percent higher than the shop’s prior lift, primarily because of the door-clearance improvement.

If the same shop had a different vehicle mix, or a taller ceiling, or a stronger preference for the deepest possible parts tail, the Rotary SPO12 would have been the equally correct choice. There is no universally better lift between these two.
