A small-fleet operator in northern Missouri running twenty-two pickups and light trucks called us about setting up a dedicated brake service bay in his own shop rather than sending work out to the local dealer. He wanted a car lift comparison — specifically a side-by-side of a two-post versus a four-post configuration — and he wanted to know whether ALI Gold certification really mattered for a fleet-only shop that would never see outside customer vehicles. What ALI Gold Actually Certifies

The northern Missouri fleet owner started the conversation with a question worth answering up front: does ALI Gold matter for a shop that only services in-house vehicles? Yes, and here is why. ALI Gold is third-party verification against ANSI/ALI ALCTV — the same standard OSHA looks to when a fleet has a workplace injury involving a car lift. Uncertified equipment is not automatically illegal, but if there is an incident and the lift is not certified, the fleet’s workers’ compensation carrier and OSHA both have a much easier path to citing the employer for using non-conforming equipment.

Beyond compliance, ALI Gold correlates almost perfectly with build quality. The units that pass third-party testing also happen to have better welds, better arm-restraint teeth, better cables, and better long-term parts availability. Every lift we sell — Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, Atlas — is ALI Gold. We do not carry non-certified equipment because we cannot service it safely for the buyer once the warranty expires, and reputable insurance carriers ask fleet operators about certification during policy renewal cycles more often now than they used to.

Two-Post Configuration: Arm Reach and Access

A two-post car lift for brake service gives the tech unobstructed access to all four wheels at the same time. The vehicle hangs on four pad points, the wheels are free, and the tech can pull all four calipers, rotors, and pads without moving the vehicle or repositioning any part of the equipment. That workflow is faster per vehicle than a four-post-plus-jack configuration for brake work specifically. On a small-fleet bay running four to six brake jobs a day, that time saving matters.

The trade-off is arm setup. Every vehicle that comes into the bay needs the arms set to the manufacturer’s designated lift points, and every lift-point setup is a two-minute discipline check. For a fleet with twenty-two vehicles across four or five model years, techs learn the lift points quickly and setup time drops. For a mixed shop that sees a different vehicle every hour, arm setup is a real ongoing labor cost. A dedicated fleet bay is the two-post’s ideal environment because the vehicle mix is bounded and repeated.

Four-Post Configuration: Drive-On Speed

A four-post car lift with a rolling jack solves brake service differently. The vehicle drives on, the runways lift the whole vehicle including its own wheels, and then the rolling jack lifts one axle at a time off the runways for wheel-off brake work. That is more steps than the two-post workflow, but the setup time per vehicle is close to zero because there are no arms to position. Drive on, chock, lift, jack, done.

For a small-fleet operator servicing a repeated set of pickups, that drive-on speed does not always win against the two-post’s four-wheels-off simultaneous access. But for the same operator doing tire rotations, oil changes, chassis inspections, and general under-body work in addition to brakes, the four-post is more versatile. Our northern Missouri buyer ended up with a two-post for the dedicated brake bay and a four-post for the general-service bay because the two workflows are different enough that one piece of equipment cannot serve both efficiently.

Load Rating for Light and Medium Fleet Trucks

Load rating is where a lot of small-fleet operators undersize. Half-ton pickups run 5,000 to 6,000 pounds curb. Three-quarter-ton trucks with utility bodies run 7,500 to 9,000 pounds. One-ton trucks with heavier service bodies can push 10,500 pounds. For a fleet running a mix, we spec 12,000 pounds minimum on both the two-post and the four-post, and 14,000 or 15,000 if the fleet has any one-ton work trucks with heavy service bodies or upfits.

The cost delta between a 10,000 pound car lift and a 12,000 pound version is usually under fifteen percent, and the delta between 12,000 and 15,000 is another ten percent or so. Compared to the twenty-year life of the asset, those percentages are trivial. Undersizing on the front end to save a thousand dollars against the initial invoice is the single most common regret we hear from small-fleet buyers three to five years in when the fleet grows into heavier vehicles that the original lift can no longer handle safely.

Concrete and Slab Requirements Compared

Concrete requirements differ between the two configurations. A two-post car lift concentrates load on two column footprints and requires a four-inch minimum 3,000 psi slab per ANSI ALCTV. Heavier commercial two-posts sometimes require six inches. A four-post spreads the same load across four columns and is more forgiving of thinner or older slabs — most four-posts do not require anchoring at all and simply sit on the slab under their own weight and the vehicle’s weight.

For an older northern Missouri fleet building with unknown slab specs, the four-post is the safer bet on the concrete side. For a new-construction fleet garage where the operator can pour the slab to any spec, either configuration works. We inspect the slab as part of every install proposal and quote any necessary cut-and-pour work as a separate line item. Skipping the slab inspection and hoping for the best is the single fastest way to void an ALI certification on install day and turn an eight-thousand-dollar investment into a ten-thousand-dollar problem.

Combined Cost Comparison Over Twenty Years

On a per-piece-of-equipment basis, a two-post 12,000 pound ALI Gold car lift installed runs roughly forty-five hundred to sixty-five hundred dollars. A four-post 12,000 pound ALI Gold configuration with a rolling jack runs roughly six thousand to eighty-five hundred installed. The four-post is more expensive out of the gate because of the additional runway steel and the rolling jack accessory. Over a twenty-year asset life, the operating costs are comparable — annual maintenance is similar, cables and hoses wear at similar rates, and both configurations recertify annually under ALI at the same cost.

The revenue-side comparison depends on the shop’s workflow. A two-post processes brake jobs faster. A four-post processes tire rotations and oil changes faster. If the fleet is doing mostly brake and suspension work, the two-post pays back sooner. If the fleet is doing mostly routine maintenance and inspection, the four-post pays back sooner. For a fleet doing a mix, one of each is often the right answer, and our northern Missouri buyer’s decision to buy both bays is more common than most first-time fleet operators expect.

Which One We Recommend for Your Shop

Our recommendation for any small-fleet brake-focused shop in northern Missouri is to start with a two-post if the shop only has room for one bay, or one of each if the shop has room for two bays. The two-post handles brake work fastest, and brake service is what the operator is optimizing for. If the shop grows into a second bay later, add a four-post for general service and inspection work rather than duplicating the two-post.

Whichever configuration you choose, spec ALI Gold, spec load rating at least fifteen percent over the fleet’s heaviest vehicle, and buy from a distributor who will service the equipment locally. Off-brand online purchases from coastal sellers rarely have anyone in Missouri who will show up when a cable slips or a cylinder starts leaking, and a fleet with a stuck truck on a broken car lift during a busy repair week cannot wait two weeks for a service call.
