An independent pro shop owner in Sioux City asked us last winter to compare two possible bay layouts for a new car lift drive on unit he was using half for service work and half for seasonal vehicle storage. He wanted the same lift to hoist a customer’s car during the day and hold his own summer convertible over the winter at night. That is a common Iowa-side ask, and it is a use case where bay layout matters more than the lift model itself. Below is the side-by-side comparison we walked him through, laid out the same way we would explain it standing in your shop.

Layout A: single dedicated car lift drive on bay at the back wall

The first layout we sketched puts one car lift drive on unit against the back wall of the shop, roughly 30 feet from the overhead door, with the runways aligned parallel to the door. This is the layout most Sioux City shops we work with default to. The vehicle drives in, tracks straight down the shop, rolls up onto the runways, and gets lifted. Underneath the lift is dedicated storage space. Nothing else lives in that bay. When the summer convertible is up for the winter, no other car uses that column footprint.

The advantage of this layout is workflow simplicity. The tech never has to reposition tools, air lines, or a MIG cart because the lift is always in the same place doing the same job. The disadvantage is that the dedicated bay is dead space eight months of the year unless the shop actively services vehicles on it. For a Sioux City independent that does mostly walk-in service, the dead space adds up. This layout works best if service volume is high enough to keep the lift busy year round, not just during storage season.

Layout B: rotating drive-on lift bay shared with a floor jack bay

The second layout we sketched puts the car lift drive on unit slightly off-center in a shared bay, angled so a floor-jack station can operate in the same footprint when the lift is down and empty. The runways are 108 inches on center, so when they are lowered to the floor a mechanic can still roll a floor jack between them and lift a vehicle at a normal working height. When the lift is up with a car on it, the whole bay converts to overhead storage mode with parking space underneath.

This layout doubles the bay’s utility. Same square footage, twice the workflow options. The tradeoff is complexity. The mechanic has to remember to clear the runways and drop the lift completely before rolling in a jack. Air lines and lighting have to be routed so they clear both use modes. For an independent pro shop with two techs sharing a bay this layout usually wins because it keeps the storage benefit without giving up daytime service capacity. For a solo shop with plenty of floor space, Layout A is simpler.

Ceiling height: how each layout affects overhead clearance

Sioux City shops tend to run somewhere between 12 and 14 feet of clear ceiling height, and that matters a lot when you are picking between these two layouts. Layout A allows a slightly taller lift because the vehicle underneath is stationary. You can push a car lift drive on rise to 76 inches or higher and still store a car underneath as long as the overhead vehicle plus the runway height clears the ceiling. If your ceiling is 14 feet and the stored vehicle is a low convertible, you have real headroom to spare.

Layout B is more constrained because the floor-jack use mode wants the runways as flat and low as possible when the lift is down. Most 4-post drive-on runways sit around four to five inches off the ground when fully lowered, which is fine for a jack but eats a little of your ceiling budget when the lift is fully up. If your ceiling is only 12 feet, we usually recommend a lower-rise model in Layout B so that the top of the runway plus a stored SUV does not clip your ceiling insulation. Measure first, spec second.

Storage duty: what a drive-on lift asks of the mechanical locks

Both layouts share one common requirement: when a vehicle sits on the car lift drive on for months at a time during storage season, the mechanical safety locks carry the weight. The hydraulic system does not hold the load overnight, and it should never be asked to. Every major brand we sell has a lock system that engages every few inches of rise, and the operator selects the parking height when the storage vehicle is parked. The lift settles onto the locks, and the pump can be turned off entirely.

What differs between the layouts is inspection access. In Layout A, the mechanic can walk all around the lift columns quarterly and inspect lock engagement without moving another vehicle out of the way. In Layout B, the shared bay might have a service vehicle in it when inspection time comes around. We recommend a written quarterly lock inspection for any shop using a drive-on lift for storage, and Layout A makes that inspection easier. Neither layout is unsafe; the difference is friction in the maintenance workflow. A shop that neglects inspection eventually pays for it.

Rolling jacks and the shared-bay compromise

Rolling jacks are the tool that lets a car lift drive on unit do wheel service. In Layout A the rolling jacks live parked on the cross rails and never come off. Any tech walking up to the bay knows the jacks are there and the lift is ready for wheel work. In Layout B the jacks compete for space with the floor jack station and sometimes get stashed against the wall between uses. That is fine as long as the shop discipline is there to put them back before the next lift job.

The Sioux City shop we built this comparison for chose Layout B and dedicated a wall bracket for the rolling jacks between uses. That solved the discipline problem: if the jacks are not on the wall, they are on the lift, so there is no third possibility to hunt down. Small process choices like that determine whether a shared bay actually saves square footage or just adds confusion. Cost delta between the two layouts

The lift itself costs the same in either layout. The install labor is close, with Layout B costing a small amount more because we usually spend an extra half day on floor marking and confirming the shared-bay tool routing before we drop anchors. The bigger cost difference is opportunity cost. Layout A dedicates a bay to storage plus part-time service. Layout B keeps the bay in full service rotation plus storage. Over a five-year window the extra service throughput usually pays for itself many times over compared to the modest install premium.

For a Sioux City independent pro shop that already has more service demand than bay time, we recommend Layout B almost every time. For a shop where service demand is even with capacity or below, Layout A is fine and the workflow is simpler.
