Car Lift Drive On in Central Iowa: A First-Year Ownership Story for an RV Service Shop

An RV and trailer service shop in central Iowa signed the paperwork on a new car lift drive on with us last spring, and twelve months later we thought the whole story was worth writing down. When an owner is weighing whether to finance a lift, whether the payment schedule lines up with peak season, and how a drive-on will actually change the daily work, the brochure never tells the honest part. We are Auto Lift Services, based in Ames, and this article walks through what that first year looked like from install day through peak fall storage season, including the financing terms we structured and how the monthly payment lined up with the shop’s cash flow.

Why This Central Iowa Shop Chose a Car Lift Drive On

The shop had been renting bay time at a neighbor’s building whenever an RV came in for chassis work. That got old fast. The owner had a 40×60 pole barn on his property with a concrete floor pour scheduled for early spring, and he wanted a lift that could handle a Class-C motorhome chassis for storage plus a passenger vehicle underneath during the off-season. That is the classic drive-on use case: high capacity, long runway, and the option to stack storage cars beneath.

We spec’d a 14,000-pound extended-length car lift drive on with rolling jacks. The extended length matters for RV chassis because the wheelbase can easily hit 190 inches, well past what a standard passenger-car runway will accept. The rolling jacks give the shop the option to lift the wheels for brake and axle work without moving the coach. For a small central Iowa RV shop, this was the config that let a single lift do triple duty: service, storage, and passenger under-storage.

The Financing Terms We Structured

The owner did not want a five-figure cash outlay in the same quarter he was pouring a slab and running conduit. We wrote the deal through our 0% APR twelve-month financing partner with a ninety-day payment deferral. That meant the first payment did not hit until the shop had run for a full season, so the lift was earning revenue before the first invoice came due. For a seasonal business in central Iowa, that ninety-day gap was the difference between yes now and maybe next year.

Total installed cost including rolling jacks landed in the low-five-figure range. Divided across twelve months at 0% APR, the payment fit inside two average RV storage lease revenues per month. We do not require a security deposit on lifts we install ourselves, because we can service the unit for the life of the equipment. That policy has kept our default rate at essentially zero and our repeat-customer rate high, which is more or less the whole point of doing the paperwork this way.

Install Day: What Central Iowa Prep Looks Like

Install went on a Tuesday in late April. Our two-person crew rolled in at seven, unloaded the crate off the delivery truck at seven-thirty, and had the columns anchored by noon. The slab had been poured six weeks earlier at four inches of 4,000-PSI mix with fiber reinforcement, which is our recommended spec for a 14K car lift drive on. The electrician had prewired a 30-amp single-phase 220 circuit to the corner where the power unit would live. Because the pre-install checklist was clean, install ran shorter than the eight hours we quote.

We commissioned the lift, ran three full-cycle load tests with a chassis stand, and walked the owner through the safety lock sequence, the shutoff, the emergency lowering procedure, and the daily inspection habit. Every drive-on install we do finishes with a printed operator card that lives on the column. If your shop hires a new tech, they read the card before they touch the controls. That card has saved more than one shop from a training gap that could have been ugly.

Month Three: First Big Storage Job

The first serious test came in July when a customer dropped off a diesel Class-C for chassis lube, differential service, and summer storage while the family traveled. This was the day the car lift drive on earned its financing. A job that would have taken half a day at a neighbor’s shop was done in the owner’s own bay in under three hours. The customer paid roughly twice the shop’s usual passenger-car ticket, because the RV work carried its own labor rate, and there were no bay-rental costs to eat the margin.

Under-storage started the same week. The shop already had a passenger sedan customer who paid monthly to store his weekend project car indoors. That sedan tucked under the RV on the runways with more than a foot of clearance, doubling the storage revenue on the same footprint. Two revenue streams on one lift, on one day, in one central Iowa bay. That is the drive-on economics that a two-post cannot deliver, no matter how you spec it.

Peak Season: The Seasonal Vehicle Storage Math

By October the shop was booking out three months in advance for winter RV storage. The car lift drive on carries one coach up, one sedan tucks under, and the rest of the building held eight to twelve additional units on the floor and along the perimeter. Our math for a shop this size: a single drive-on can add roughly two to four thousand dollars of monthly storage revenue at central Iowa market rates, assuming the coach is rotated seasonally and the under-vehicle stays parked for six months.

The lift also let the shop offer storage-plus-spring-service bundles. Customers dropped off in November, picked up in April, and paid a fixed bundled rate that included one under-vehicle inspection, chassis lube, and fluid top-off. Bundle margins beat pure storage. This is a play that only works when you have a lift that can hold the vehicle in place for the labor part of the service. A car lift drive on makes the bundle possible without dedicating an extra bay to it.

Year-End Numbers: Payback vs the Payment Schedule

Twelve months in, the owner had paid off the lift and had roughly forty percent of the total installed cost sitting as net cash after operating expenses on lift-driven revenue alone. The 0% APR structure and ninety-day deferral meant no interest was ever paid; the lift financed itself out of the storage revenue that would not have existed without it. That is the punch line we keep coming back to for shops on the fence about financing a car lift drive on this year versus waiting for next.

The lift also became the reason the shop won two commercial fleet accounts, one a local delivery service and one a landscaping outfit with dually pickups. Both accounts wanted a shop that could handle a full-size chassis, not just a passenger car. Once word got around central Iowa that this shop had a drive-on with rolling jacks, the calls started coming in without any advertising. A lift is a marketing asset as much as a service asset, and that is easy to underestimate on day one.

What They Would Do Different on Lift Number Two

The one thing the owner would change: spec the alignment package from day one. When brake customers started asking about alignments after the tire rotation, the shop had to send them down the road. Adding an alignment package to an existing car lift drive on is possible but costs more retrofit than factory. Our advice for anyone building a shop from scratch in central Iowa: if there is any chance you will add alignment inside three years, buy the alignment version now and skip the retrofit.
