Transmission service is heavy and slow. A trans jack loaded with a modern automatic weighs several hundred pounds by itself, and the unit itself can push past 200 pounds on a front-wheel-drive car and much more on a rear-wheel-drive truck. That combined weight needs a stable overhead vehicle, plenty of underbody access, and a jack that can roll smoothly on a flat surface. A car lift drive on unit provides all three. The vehicle sits on its own tires on flat runways, the underbelly is clear, and the trans jack rolls freely underneath without obstacles.

A two-post lift can technically handle trans work, but the arms crowd the workspace and the vehicle geometry shifts slightly under the pinch-weld pads, making the trans jack alignment finicky.
