A heavy-duty truck shop in Ankeny wanted a car lift drive on rig sized for alignment work on Class 3 and Class 4 trucks — the F-350, F-450, Ram 5500, and the occasional stretched dually service truck that rolls into their bay. Alignment is precision work, and the lift under the truck has to be flat, stiff, and rated well above the vehicle’s gross weight. The owner asked us for a full cost breakdown from lift purchase through install, plus a look at long-term cylinder maintenance since he plans to hold this equipment for at least fifteen years. This article walks through the numbers, the specification calls, and the reasons behind each.

Alignment-Rated vs. General Service Drive-On

An alignment lift is not just a drive-on with a longer sticker price. The runway itself has to accept front turnplates and rear slip plates, which means precisely machined cutouts in the runway deck. The lift also has to hold flat within a very tight tolerance — most alignment machines require the runways to be within 1/8 inch of flat across the full length, and the lift itself needs to lock at multiple heights without settle. A general-service drive-on may have a quarter-inch of settle in an hour under load, which is fine for a brake job but disqualifying for alignment.

His candidate list came down to two alignment-rated 18,000 lb rigs. Both had turnplate pockets, rear slip plate cutouts, and mechanical lock ladders with tighter tooth spacing than a standard drive-on. Both had rolling jack compatibility. The delta between them was about 15 percent, driven by one having a slightly longer runway and a wider bay width to accept dually axles without the tires overhanging the runway. Wheel overhang is the biggest single thing new alignment shops get wrong when they buy a car lift drive on. If the rear duals overhang the runway edge, you cannot roll the slip plates to the correct alignment position and your rear-axle work is compromised.

The Lift Line Item

The 18K alignment-rated drive-on he chose landed in the low-five-figure to mid-five-figure range delivered, depending on options. That price includes the turnplate cutouts, the rear slip plates, the taller columns needed to raise a full-height truck to working height, and mechanical safety locks at 24-position intervals. It does not include the turnplates themselves, which are alignment-machine-specific and get sourced from whoever makes his alignment computer. Turnplates are typically a low-to-mid four-figure line for a matched pair.

Rolling jacks in this capacity class run in the mid-four-figure range for a pair rated at 8,000 lb each. Alignment shops usually buy them because wheel-off inspection is part of the alignment process on a heavy-duty truck — you pull the wheel to inspect ball joints, tie rod ends, and steering box mounts before you finalize the alignment specs. Trying to do that without rolling jacks means bottle jacks under a truck axle, which is slow and unsafe at those weights. A properly specced heavy-duty car lift drive on for alignment work is not a $10,000 project. It is a $25,000 to $40,000 project depending on options and alignment machine integration.

Freight, Slab, and Install Labor

Freight from Ames to Ankeny is short — about 40 minutes — but the lift ships on two pallets because the columns are too tall for a single skid. We ran the delivery on our own flatbed instead of an LTL carrier and saved him a few hundred dollars. Slab prep is where alignment installs get expensive. An alignment lift needs a slab that is not just structurally adequate but also flat. Most existing shop slabs are within a half inch of flat, which is fine for a general-service lift but out of spec for an alignment rig.

We surveyed his slab with a laser level before ordering the lift. The bay he wanted to use was 3/8 inch out over the column footprint, which is workable with column shimming but not ideal. He decided to grind the slab high spots down before install, which added a mid-three-figure line for a concrete-grinding subcontractor. Install labor for the lift itself ran in the mid-four-figure range, higher than a standard commercial drive-on because the anchor pattern is larger, the column plumb tolerance is tighter, and the initial calibration takes an extra half day. That is normal for any car lift drive on rated for alignment. Cutting corners on install to save $2,000 is not smart on a $30,000+ lift that has to hold alignment tolerance for two decades.

Electrical and Alignment Machine Integration

Power for an 18K alignment lift is single-phase 220V at 30 amps. His shop already had 208V three-phase for a heavy-duty tire changer and welding bay, and we recommended running a dedicated 220V single-phase drop for the lift power unit rather than trying to run the lift off a phase converter. Phase converters work, but they introduce voltage sag under start load, and lift power units are happier on a clean single-phase circuit. Electrician cost for the new drop was in the low four-figure range because the run to the panel was 60 feet through a truss space.

Alignment machine integration was the last utility question. His alignment computer needed a network cable from the runway-mounted target holders back to the main console. He ran that cable in conduit under the slab in the trench we cut for the hydraulic hose. Doing both at once saved a second concrete cut later. Integrating the alignment machine with a new car lift drive on is straightforward if you plan the cable paths before install day. It becomes ugly if you try to retrofit later and end up with cable runs draped along the columns.

Hydraulic Cylinder Seals and Long-Term Rebuild

He plans to keep this lift for at least fifteen years, and possibly twenty. That means he will rebuild the hydraulic cylinder at least once during ownership, and possibly twice. Cylinder seal life on a heavy-duty alignment drive-on in daily commercial use is typically eight to twelve years. Rebuild kits for this class of cylinder run in the low-to-mid three-figure range for the seals themselves. Labor for a cylinder rebuild is a full day if the cylinder can be pulled without disassembling the lift, or a two-day job if not. Most alignment drive-on cylinders on this model can be pulled with the columns in place.

The other long-term wear items are the cables and the safety ladder ratchet pawls. Cables run seven to ten years in daily commercial use before measurement-based replacement is warranted. Pawls typically outlast the cables. Anchors do not wear out in normal use but can loosen if the lift takes a heavy asymmetric load — like a truck driven off the runway during descent. Annual anchor torque check is a five-minute job with a torque wrench and worth doing. Total scheduled maintenance spend over fifteen years on a well-maintained alignment-rated car lift drive on is typically low-single-digit thousands of dollars in parts. Labor if you outsource is another few thousand. That is not much for a piece of equipment that will generate multiple six figures of alignment revenue over the same period.

Payback and Full Project Total

Total project cost for his install — lift, options, turnplates, rolling jacks, freight, slab prep, install labor, electrical, alignment machine cabling — landed in the low-to-mid five-figure range if we exclude the alignment computer itself. If you include the alignment machine, the total is well into the mid-five-figures. He was already running a lower-capacity alignment rig that could not handle Class 3 and 4 trucks, so this project let him take on work he had been turning away. Payback math on new alignment capability is faster than most shop equipment because the labor rate on heavy-duty alignment is significantly higher than passenger-car alignment.

He projected two to four heavy alignment jobs per week within six months of install, with total annual revenue from the new capability well into the low six figures. That is a two-year payback on the full project cost, which is aggressive but achievable given his existing customer base of fleet operators who had been driving to Des Moines or Omaha for heavy alignment work. Adding an alignment-rated car lift drive on is one of the highest-return single equipment purchases a heavy-duty truck shop can make, provided the shop already has the customer base to feed it. If you are starting from zero customers, the math is slower and you have to market the new capability aggressively for the first year to fill the bay.
