An EV specialty shop owner in Cedar Falls called us about a car lift for differential fluid service on Model Y and Ioniq 5 vehicles, and within five minutes the conversation had turned to cable inspection intervals. He’d read three different forum threads with three different opinions about how often to replace equalization cables on a shop that runs battery-heavy vehicles, and none of the threads matched the manufacturer manual. Myth: EVs wear out lift cables faster than ICE vehicles

The number one thing we hear from EV shop owners is that battery packs are so heavy they’ll destroy a two-post car lift cable in a couple of years. It’s not true. A Model Y curb weight is roughly 4,400 pounds. A Ford F-150 curb weight is roughly 4,700 to 5,600 pounds depending on trim. A Chevy Suburban is 5,800. The heaviest common EVs — Rivian R1T, Hummer EV — are meaningfully heavier, but they’re still under the capacity of a properly-spec’d 10,000 or 12,000-pound lift.

What actually drives cable wear is cycle count and load asymmetry, not raw weight. A shop that lifts twenty vehicles a day cycles cables twenty times a day, and the cable at the shorter arm — carrying more of an asymmetrically-loaded vehicle — wears faster than the other. On an EV, where the battery pack is centered under the floor, load asymmetry is actually lower than on a typical ICE vehicle with a heavy engine at one end. In our experience, EV shops don’t wear cables faster than internal combustion shops of the same volume. They wear them at the same rate. The manual interval — typically every three to five years on high-utilization commercial lifts — applies to both.

Myth: You need a special car lift rated for EVs

There’s no such thing as an “EV-rated” lift in any meaningful sense. The ALI certification standard doesn’t distinguish EV from ICE, because capacity is capacity. What some EV shops actually need is a lift with sufficient drive-through width to accommodate battery pack drop-out tables and an underhoist crane clearance for lifting the pack off the vehicle. A standard two-post car lift installed with the manufacturer’s recommended column spread accommodates all of this fine, as long as the shop specifies the wider drive-through option at order time.

For a Cedar Falls EV specialty shop doing differential fluid service and other light-to-medium underside work, a standard 10,000-pound asymmetric two-post is more than adequate. If the shop plans to do battery pack removal on Model S or Rivian-class vehicles, we’d recommend adding a low-profile mid-rise scissor for pack-drop support at proper working height. The scissor isn’t a replacement for the two-post — it’s a companion. This is the pattern we’re installing at most of the EV shops we work with in Iowa: one two-post for underside access, one scissor for pack service, and neither needing any “EV-special” certification that doesn’t actually exist on paper.

The actual cable inspection interval that matters

Manufacturer manuals give you two intervals for equalization cables: an inspection interval and a replacement interval. On most Tier-1 commercial two-post lifts, inspection is monthly and replacement is at three to five years depending on cycle count, or immediately upon visible wear. The visible wear indicators are the same across brands: broken individual wire strands, a pinched or crushed section, visible corrosion or rust at the terminations, and stretch beyond the manufacturer’s take-up range.

The monthly inspection takes ten minutes if you know what you’re looking for. Bring the lift to the top of its travel, kill the power, and walk each cable from termination to termination with a rag and a strong flashlight. Wipe the cable as you go — you’ll feel broken strands as burrs on the rag. Look at the terminations for kinked wire and visible rust. Check for stretch by measuring the position of a reference mark or by counting the exposed threads on the take-up adjuster. Log the inspection in the customer packet we provide at install. That’s it. A car lift owner who does this every month knows exactly when the cable needs replacement — and never has a surprise failure between manuals inspections.

Why cable replacement is cheap insurance

Equalization and lifting cables are among the cheapest wear parts on a commercial two-post. On most brands, a full set of cables — main lifting and equalization — is a mid-hundreds parts spend, plus a couple of hours of installer labor. Compared to the cost of a cable failure with a vehicle on the lift, that’s essentially free insurance.

The failure mode when a cable snaps varies by design. On lifts with independent hydraulic cylinders on each column, a snapped equalization cable can cause one column to lift while the other doesn’t, tilting the vehicle. On lifts with a mechanical equalization system, cable failure can cause an uncontrolled descent. Neither is dangerous if the safety cams are engaged, which is why we hammer safety-cam engagement in every install training. But even with cams engaged, a cable failure means the lift is out of service until parts arrive. For a Cedar Falls EV shop with booked service appointments, that’s a real cost. We tell EV shop owners to replace cables on the low end of the manufacturer’s recommended interval — three years, not five — and just calendar it. The parts cost is trivial compared to the operational disruption of an unscheduled failure.

What actually stresses a car lift in an EV shop

The real wear driver in an EV shop is not the vehicles — it’s the ergonomics of the work being done. EV service typically involves longer time-on-lift than a comparable ICE service. Battery diagnostics, coolant loop service on the pack, and drivetrain-fluid service all take longer than an oil change or a brake job. That means the vehicle sits on the lift for hours instead of tens of minutes.

Long dwell times don’t directly wear cables or arms, but they do stress the safety-cam mechanism when techs raise and lower repeatedly to reposition. Every raise-and-lower cycle is a cam engagement and disengagement, and cams that aren’t lubricated or that have accumulated debris will start skipping detents. We recommend EV shops schedule a quarterly cam-track cleaning: fifteen minutes with compressed air and a light penetrant. That single habit will extend the useful life of the mechanical safeties by years. Cables get all the internet attention, but on an EV shop the safeties are actually the higher-wear item. This is where we spend a disproportionate amount of the training conversation when we install a car lift at a Cedar Falls or Waterloo EV specialty shop.

What to buy for an EV specialty shop today

Primary bay: a Rotary SPO12 or Challenger E12 asymmetric two-post with the wider drive-through and taller column option. Capacity is well over any current EV curb weight, drive-through handles the widest EV bodies, and taller columns handle raised suspension on Rivian-class trucks. Secondary bay: a low-profile mid-rise scissor for battery pack service, alignment, and any work you’d rather do at knee height instead of overhead.

Skip the four-post unless you need alignment or storage. Skip the mobile column unless you’re servicing medium-duty vehicles that don’t fit any of the above.
