Capacity: What Class of Truck Do You Actually Lift?

The first line item on a heavy-duty budget is capacity, and it drives everything downstream. A Class 3 pickup like a Ford F-350 comes in around ten to thirteen thousand pounds gross. A Class 4 chassis like an F-450 or Ram 4500 lands closer to sixteen to seventeen thousand. Class 5 and 6 medium-duty trucks push twenty-two to twenty-six thousand pounds. Your car lift capacity has to comfortably clear the heaviest vehicle you plan to lift, plus a safety margin. Undersizing is the number-one mistake heavy-duty shops make when they buy their first commercial lift.

For the Waterloo shop, the heaviest routine job was Class 5 tow trucks and box trucks at twenty-two thousand pounds. We recommended a two-post lift rated at eighteen thousand for the standard fleet plus a mobile column lift set rated at fifteen thousand per column, giving him sixty thousand pounds total across four columns for the occasional big rig. That combination covers his real workload without over-buying on either lift. If your heaviest job is a Class 3 pickup, you do not need eighteen-thousand-pound capacity. If your heaviest job is a Class 6 medium-duty, you need to look at wireless mobile columns or a heavy-duty inground four-post. Match the capacity to the actual work.

Equipment: The Real Column-Set and Mobile Column Numbers

An eighteen-thousand-pound two-post car lift with wide-arm geometry sized for pickup trucks comes in around the fifteen to twenty thousand dollar range for the column set alone from a top brand. A four-column set of fifteen-thousand-pound mobile columns runs in the range of forty to fifty thousand dollars depending on whether they are wireless or corded and whether battery-powered or AC. Total equipment for the Waterloo shop combination came to right around sixty thousand dollars before freight and install. That is a real number for a heavy-duty setup.

Cheaper options exist. There are import mobile columns in the twenty-five thousand range for a set of four. We have serviced those and we can tell you the failure rate on hydraulic packs and battery packs is significantly higher than on domestic-tested mobile column brands. For a shop that expects to run mobile columns four days a week for the next decade, the domestic premium pays back within about three years in avoided downtime and reduced service costs. Freight, Forklift, and Unloading for a Heavy-Duty Setup

Freight for a heavy-duty car lift and mobile column set is not one delivery. It is often two or three. The two-post columns ship as one pallet. The mobile columns ship as either four individual crates or two-column pairs on pallets. Total freight cost for a combined order like the Waterloo shop typically runs two to three thousand dollars because of the volume, weight, and multiple pallets. Some carriers offer a discount if all crates ship to a commercial dock with forklift access. Residential deliveries add lift-gate fees per pallet.

Unloading is a serious question. A single mobile column crate can weigh fifteen hundred to two thousand pounds. A pair on a shared pallet can push three thousand five hundred. That is well beyond most pickup-trailer forklifts. The Waterloo shop had a warehouse forklift rated at eight thousand pounds on site, which handled every crate comfortably. If your shop does not have that class of forklift, coordinate with the freight carrier for their lift-gate option, rent a rough terrain forklift from a local rental yard for the day, or ask us to bring our equipment. Do not try to slide a two-thousand-pound crate off a trailer with pallet jacks and a couple of workers. That is how people get hurt and how equipment gets damaged before it is even unpacked.

Site Prep: Concrete for Heavy Loads

Heavy-duty capacity demands heavy-duty concrete. An eighteen-thousand-pound two-post car lift with rated pullout on the anchors requires a minimum six-inch slab at three thousand PSI or better under the column pads. Mobile columns are less concrete-sensitive because they distribute load across four points and roll to different positions, but the slab still needs to be flat and strong enough to hold the wheel loads without cracking. If your existing slab is thinner or weaker than spec, the site prep costs jump.

The Waterloo shop had a good six-inch slab under the existing service bays, but the corner where they wanted the two-post installed had been an add-on pour done a few years after the original building and was only four inches. We saw the pour history in a scan and confirmed with core samples. He had two options: pour proper footings at each column location, or move the lift to a different bay. He chose the footings because he wanted the lift in a specific bay for workflow reasons. Site prep with footings added about fifteen hundred dollars and one week to the project. If your slab meets spec everywhere, you skip this line item.

Electrical: Two-Twenty vs Three-Phase for Heavy Equipment

A single eighteen-thousand-pound two-post car lift runs fine on single-phase two-hundred-twenty-volt power with a thirty-amp circuit. Mobile columns are typically battery-powered so they charge from wall outlets and do not need dedicated three-phase service. If you are running a shop with heavy compressors, tire changers, welders, and multiple lifts, three-phase service can smooth motor loads across everything and reduce nuisance breaker trips. For the Waterloo shop, existing three-phase service was already in place from a previous industrial tenant, so this was not an added cost. If you need to bring three-phase to a single-phase building, budget three to eight thousand for the utility connection depending on your rural or urban location.

For the specific two-post install we added a dedicated thirty-amp two-hundred-twenty-volt circuit run from the existing panel. That is about six hundred dollars of electrical labor plus permit. If you have to add a subpanel or upgrade a service, add another twelve hundred to twenty-five hundred. Mobile columns need standard wall outlets for the charging bank, which is trivial to add. The overall electrical add-on for the Waterloo project was about eight hundred dollars because the panel already had capacity and the runs were short.

Install Labor for a Combined Setup

Our install crew charged the Waterloo shop a combined install fee that covered the two-post lift setup on new footings plus a full commissioning and training session for the mobile column set. The two-post install took a full day with the footings ready. The mobile column training was another half day covering safe use of the sync system, individual column operation, load matching, and the emergency stop protocol on a wireless system. Combined install labor came to about three thousand dollars. That is more than a single two-post install because of the training component, but it is a fair number for a heavy-duty setup where the shop needs to be genuinely competent on wireless columns before the first customer job.

The training piece is worth calling out because we see shops skip it and regret it. Mobile columns synced wrong can lift a truck unevenly, damage frame rails, or in worst cases drop a vehicle. Every operator on that lift needs to know the sync protocol before they get near a customer chassis. Total Cost and the Payoff Math

Total project cost for the Waterloo heavy-duty combination car lift setup came to roughly sixty-eight thousand dollars all-in: sixty thousand equipment, two thousand five hundred freight, one thousand five hundred site prep, eight hundred electrical, three thousand install and training. That is a real number for a heavy-duty truck shop upgrading from ground work to full lift capability. He financed most of it through a five-year equipment loan and paid the freight and install out of operating cash. Monthly payment was manageable against his existing revenue.

Payoff math for a heavy-duty setup is different from a general-service shop. His shop was already turning down Class 5 and Class 6 suspension work because he could not lift the trucks off the ground. Adding the mobile column capability opened a new revenue line worth roughly forty to sixty thousand a year in gross service revenue, with margin at about forty percent. That means the mobile column portion alone pays back inside three years even before you factor in the two-post value for lighter suspension work.
