Why a Two-Post Car Lift Beat the Alternatives
For a shop that mixes restoration work, welding, and light frame repair, a two-post car lift wins over most of the alternatives we discussed. A four-post is great for storage and alignment but blocks the underside with runways, which kills any exhaust or rocker work. A mid-rise scissor gets you off the ground fast but leaves the wheels hanging — not helpful when you need brake or suspension access. And a mobile column set is amazing for chassis work on heavy trailers, but the up-front price and floor-space penalty were too much for a one-tech RV shop.
The two-post gave them full-underbody access, wheels-free lifting, and enough headroom to swing a 6-foot rocker panel out of a Silverado without brushing the ceiling. We spec’d a 10,000-pound clear-floor Rotary asymmetric with three-stage front arms and dual-stage rear arms — a symmetric option would have made loading a shorter passenger vehicle awkward, but the asymmetric let them slide the door open on a Ford Ranger and still walk around the vehicle. That combination — clear-floor for undercarriage sweep, asymmetric arms for loading flexibility, and 10K capacity for the occasional Ford F-350 — is what made this two-post car lift the right structural pick for their exact mix of work. Rotary SPOA10 Versus Challenger E10: Head-to-Head Specs
We handed the Waterloo owner two model comparison sheets: the Rotary SPOA10 clear-floor and the Challenger CL10 clear-floor. Both are ALI-certified, both rated 10,000 pounds, and both have overhead shut-off bars and hydraulic dual-cylinder designs. The differences show up in the details. The Rotary posts are heavier-gauge steel with a taller column at 12 feet 1 inch overall, giving a bit more useful lifting height when the truss allows. Challenger’s E10 runs a slightly shorter column at around 11 feet 8 inches, which fits tight ceilings better but limits how high a tall SUV can climb.
Arm reach on the Rotary SPOA10 is 25.5 inches short and 51 inches long on the front arms. Challenger’s numbers are within an inch or two either way. Both handle a 122-inch wheelbase minimum on asymmetric configuration. The cable-and-sheave synchronization systems are similar in design, but the Rotary sheaves are larger diameter, which reduces cable fatigue over time. Both use direct-drive hydraulic cylinders sized around 3.5 inches. In the field, we service more Rotary units simply because there are more of them out there, but Challenger’s warranty and parts availability through our shop is identical. For this specific RV shop, we recommended the Rotary because we already stock the exact cable, hose, and cylinder rebuild parts for it — meaning a next-day fix if something ever fails.
Restoration and Metal Work Under a Car Lift
Restoration and metal work under a car lift changes what the whole shop can bill. In the twelve months since install, the Waterloo crew has stopped turning down rocker panel replacements, undercoating jobs, and floor-pan patch welds. Those are jobs they used to farm out because crawling under a jacked-up truck with a MIG welder is neither safe nor productive. Sparks and slag are a hazard around any lift, so we set them up with a fire-rated welding curtain kit and coached them on keeping the hydraulic hoses shielded during heavy welding sessions. Cable damage from stray sparks is one of the most common preventable failures we see, and one small habit — hanging a leather flap over the arm-restraint pins during welding — prevents nearly all of it. That kind of coaching is what an installer-supplier relationship looks like, and it is why the shop has already sent us two referrals from other trailer-repair outfits in the region.
The First-Year Punch List and What We Fixed
Every install generates a small punch list within the first three months, and this one was no different. About six weeks in, the owner noticed one arm swinging slightly loose when unloaded. We drove out, retorqued the arm-restraint gears, and verified that the sheaves and cables were still in factory range. Around month four, the hydraulic reservoir showed a small weep at the return fitting — one of those factory pipe-thread joints that sometimes needs a fresh wrap of PTFE. Ten minutes, no downtime, no charge.
The bigger first-year lesson was electrical. Their shop panel had one open 30-amp double-pole slot, and the initial install ran off that. During month eight they added a plasma cutter and started tripping breakers under heavy welding load. We came back out, walked the panel with their electrician, and added a dedicated sub-panel and disconnect within six feet of the lift’s motor housing. That is the correct code-compliant setup for any shop running multiple 220-volt tools, and we always recommend planning for future amperage before the drywall goes back up. Small things like this are what turn a good install into a great one, and they are the reason we insist on being available for the full first year rather than dropping equipment and disappearing.
Concrete, Ceiling Height, and Bay Layout Realities
Concrete was the single biggest unknown before the install. The building was ten years old, and the original slab pour was documented at 4 inches over 4 inches of compacted rock. That is the absolute minimum spec for a 10,000-pound two-post, and we did a hammer-drill test at three anchor locations to confirm the mix was consistent and free of voids. It passed. If it had not, we would have recommended cutting and re-pouring a 6-inch pad rather than risking anchor pullout under load — that is a conversation we have with about one in ten shops we visit.
Ceiling height at 13 feet 9 inches was enough for a standard-height two-post, but only just. The overhead crossbar of the lift sits at roughly 12 feet, and the shutoff mechanism has to clear the highest point of any vehicle raised to full height. For their tallest trailer tow rig with a roof rack, they now stop the lift about 18 inches shy of full extension — a small workaround but one worth planning around before the purchase. Bay layout ended up being the easiest piece; we set the two-post 14 feet from the overhead door, leaving room to work behind the vehicle and enough front clearance for the tech to open a hood without hitting the column.
What This Shop Would Do Differently Today
Twelve months in, we asked the owner what he would change if he could rewind the tape. His answer surprised us. He said he would have bought the lift a full year earlier. The bill-rate lift, the reduced worker fatigue, and the ability to say yes to restoration jobs he used to turn down together paid the equipment off inside eight months of use. He would also have added a second bay lift immediately rather than waiting — a decision he made about a month ago, and we are back on his job list now to install a second two-post before the busy season.
His only real regret was not upgrading the electrical service during the initial install.
