The Ceiling Height Math Every Shop Owner Needs
The single most important number in a car lift for storage quote is the working ceiling. Not the peak-of-the-truss height, not the eave height, but the actual clearance under the lowest obstruction in the lift bay — usually a light fixture, an HVAC duct, or an overhead-door track. On this Ames build the truss height was 14 feet but the lowest obstruction was an HVAC line at 132 inches, and that number is what we designed against. Miss that measurement and the top of a stored vehicle bangs into ductwork on the first day of use.
We ask every shop owner to shoot a laser measurement from the slab to the lowest obstruction at the four corners of the lift footprint. Any variance more than an inch across the corners tells us the ceiling is not level and we need to design against the lowest point. Ames shops in older buildings often have ceilings that slope an inch or two toward the alley side, and that slope has to be accounted for. On this build we lost three inches to a slightly sagging duct, and that dropped the maximum stored vehicle height by exactly that amount.
Door Swing and the Overhead Track Question
Door swing is the second constraint that comes up on a heavy-duty shop build. Overhead doors have tracks that swing into the lift bay space when the door goes up, and those tracks eat working height for the first six feet of bay length nearest the door. On this build the overhead door swept from 90 inches at the wall down to 108 inches at six feet in, then leveled off at 132 inches — matching the general ceiling. A car lift for storage set inside that six-foot swing envelope has to fit under 108 inches, or the stored vehicle strikes the door track when the door opens.
We solved this by positioning the four-post so the storage-height stored vehicle sat entirely outside the six-foot swing zone. The lower service vehicle for suspension work could still enter and exit through the swing zone at floor level. That kind of layout wrinkle is not visible on a paper spec sheet and it is exactly why we insist on a site walk before we take a deposit. The wrong lift position in the right building is a $10,000 mistake, and door swing is where those mistakes most often come from.
Line Item One — The Lift Itself
The lift for this build was a mid-tier 12,000-pound four-post car lift for storage with 180-inch runways, standard drive-through width, and locks every three inches. That capacity is significantly overspec for the light-duty stored vehicles the shop planned to keep on it, but the shop owner wanted room to eventually store a heavier vehicle and did not want to buy twice. Twelve-thousand-pound four-posts price roughly in the mid four-figures range depending on options; nine-thousand-pound versions come in a couple thousand below that.
Optional add-ons on this build included a caster kit for mobility, four runway drip trays, a jack tray, and a heavier-duty power unit. Total lift-only cost including the add-ons landed in the upper mid four-figure range. That is the number the shop owner should compare against other quotes, not the base-model MSRP that shows up on manufacturer websites. Base-model quotes never include the caster kit, drip trays, or heavier power unit that shops actually use, and comparing across quotes without normalizing for add-ons is where buyers get burned.
Line Item Two — Freight to the Ames Bay
Freight for a 12,000-pound four-post crate on our common-carrier LTL lane from the manufacturer to Ames runs a few hundred dollars for a straight delivery. That is the raw freight cost; it does not include forklift unloading, redelivery fees, or any lift-gate service that some deliveries need if the receiving dock is not lift-height. For this Ames shop the receiving dock was standard height and the shop had a rental forklift on-site during the delivery window, so the freight line item stayed clean.
When we quote installed pricing we fold freight into the total so the buyer sees a single number. That single number is honest but only if the shop owner has already told us about forklift availability, dock height, and delivery access. Delivery surprises on freight are one of the most common ways a lift quote ends up higher than expected, and we prevent them by asking the receiving questions up front rather than leaving them to a truck driver on delivery day.
Line Item Three — Install Labor
Install labor for this four-post ran seven hours across two technicians. A four-post is roughly a seven-to-nine hour install for a two-person team including unpacking, column setup, runway placement, cable routing, hydraulic hookup, lock latch adjustment, and level verification. This shop’s slab was two-tenths of an inch out of level across the runway span, and we spent about half an hour shimming column feet to true it up. That shim work is not optional even though shops sometimes ask us to skip it.
Skipping shim work causes a stored vehicle to roll slowly toward the low end of the runway over months of parking. Wheel chocks catch the roll, but the tire sidewall takes uneven load and wears prematurely, and the lock latches take shear force they were not designed for. Half an hour of shim work at install time prevents years of wear problems. Line Item Four — Slab Prep If Required
The Ames shop had a six-inch reinforced slab so no prep was needed. On builds where the slab needs work — thin pours, cracked pours, or older pole-barn floors without reinforcement — we quote column pads separately. A four-post storage lift does not typically need anchors, but the column feet still need to sit on solid concrete, and pouring column pads on a marginal slab is a common Iowa fix. Pad pouring is not part of the base install quote because it depends on what the site walk finds.
The suspension and shock work the shop planned on the lower vehicle also puts modest side load on the column feet, which is why we ask about workflow before quoting the slab line item. A pure storage-only build could get away with a slightly thinner slab than a dual-duty build. On this Ames shop the six-inch reinforced pour handled both jobs with plenty of margin, and the shop owner did not spend anything on slab prep. That is the exception, not the rule, in central Iowa buildings older than 2010.
Line Item Five — First-Year Parts and Total Ownership
The first year of ownership on a heavy-duty shop car lift for storage doing dual-duty work usually costs another modest amount in fluid changes, lock-latch grease, and one preventive cable inspection.
