Last winter a builder on the Iowa-Nebraska border called us about a car lift for storage that also had to carry a heavy overlanding restoration in a 40×60 pole barn. He had a bare frame on jack stands, a partially cut floor pan, and a wife who wanted the daily driver stored above it so the shop could hold two vehicles instead of one. The Build: What the Owner Actually Wanted

The customer’s ask was blunt: he wanted the restoration frame on a two-post for arm-off restoration work, but he also needed the daily-driver SUV stored on a four-post nearby, and the pole barn only had 40 by 60 feet to give. He had originally planned a single car lift for storage as a stopgap for both jobs, then realized the restoration work needed real welding access to the floor pans and the rocker panels. That is a two-post job, not a four-post job. The compromise we landed on was a dedicated two-post for the build and a stored-only home-storage four-post on the opposite wall for the SUV.

Ceiling height in the pole barn was 14 feet at the trusses, which gave us headroom for either a standard-height or an extended-height two-post. Slab was a five-inch pour with rebar on a 24-inch grid — plenty for a symmetric two-post with column pads. The four-post storage lift on the other wall did not need anchors, only clear runway path and drip control. Total footprint we needed came in at 22 feet of length and 24 feet of width, which fit inside the 40×60 with room for a wheeled tool cabinet and a welding cart.

Why the Build Needed a Two-Post at All

Overlanding restorations live and die on rocker and floor-pan access. If you are cutting sheet metal, welding patch panels, or drilling out spot welds on the frame, the wheels and suspension have to hang free. A four-post car lift for storage can hold a vehicle for parking or oil changes but it cannot get you clean weld access to the rockers because the runways are in the way. A two-post lifts the vehicle by the pinch welds and leaves the entire underside and both sides exposed. For restoration metalwork there is no substitute.

The customer had been considering a two-post-only build and skipping the storage lift entirely, but that meant either the SUV lived outside all winter or the barn only fit one vehicle at a time. We ran the numbers on adding a home-storage four-post against the outdoor-storage cost of scraping and warming up an SUV every morning for four months, and the four-post paid back in the first winter. That is a specific Iowa calculation that does not apply everywhere, but along the Nebraska border it is a real number.

Symmetric vs Asymmetric Arms — The Restoration Decision

The main technical debate on this build was symmetric versus asymmetric arms. Asymmetric two-posts rotate the columns roughly 30 degrees toward the rear so the driver can open the door on a fully raised car — great for daily service work on cars with heavy doors. Symmetric two-posts have columns square to the vehicle and equal-length arms front and rear, which gives more repeatable arm placement on a bare frame and better balance for a restoration where the door is often not even attached.

We recommended symmetric for this build. When the vehicle on the lift is a bare frame or a partially cut body, door swing does not matter, but balance and arm-length symmetry matter a lot. Symmetric arms also make it easier to place a heavier vehicle without tipping toward the driver side. If the owner had been running a fleet of daily-driver customer cars we would have gone asymmetric, but for a long-form restoration on a Land Cruiser frame the symmetric two-post was the safer, more repeatable answer. The storage lift on the other wall was a straightforward four-post with locks every three inches for parked-vehicle safety.

Slab and Anchor Strategy on the Border Build

The five-inch slab with rebar handled the symmetric two-post directly, no column pads required. We ran 3/4-inch wedge anchors seven inches deep and torqued to spec. A car lift for storage four-post did not need any anchors — the four columns carry the load by weight — but we set them on plastic floor pads to prevent column-foot rust from concrete moisture, which is a real problem in Iowa pole barns where the slab wicks groundwater in spring. Rust at the column foot is the number-one long-term failure point on unanchored four-posts and is trivially cheap to prevent.

We also poured a small epoxy dam around the two-post column feet to catch fluid drips from the restoration work. When you are welding, grinding, and pulling panels for eighteen months on the same vehicle, there is more fluid on the floor than you plan for. The dam plus a heavy oil-absorbent mat keeps the concrete clean, which matters for resale of the whole pole-barn setup down the line, and matters for the anchor pull-out ratings which drop dramatically when concrete is contaminated with oil.

Storage-Side Considerations — What We Chose and Why

For the storage side we specified a nine-thousand-pound four-post car lift for storage with 173-inch runways, standard drive-through width, and locks every three inches. That capacity is overkill for a mid-size SUV but it gives the owner headroom to eventually store his half-ton if the restoration ever takes over the two-post permanently. Nine-thousand-pound four-posts also hold better resale value than six-thousand-pound units, which matters if the build ever gets sold as a package.

We included fold-under approach ramps, four runway drip trays, a jack tray, and a caster kit that lets the owner roll the entire four-post across the barn if he ever wants to reconfigure the space. The caster kit adds an underused capability: he can move the lift ten feet without breaking it down, which turned out to matter three months later when a snowmobile trailer had to come into the barn for winter. That kind of flexibility is what pushes a home-storage build from useful to actually beloved.

Install Sequence and What Took Longest

Install day ran nine hours for the pair. The two-post went first because it needed anchor drilling and epoxy set time on the two-part chemical anchor; the four-post storage lift on the other wall was assembled in parallel by the second technician. The single longest task was aligning the four-post runways to true level across a 14-foot span — pole-barn slabs are rarely flat within a quarter inch, and we shimmed one column foot by three-eighths of an inch to true up the runway to horizontal. Skipping that shim work causes stored vehicles to roll forward or backward off the ramps over time.

The second-longest task was routing the two-post overhead hydraulic hose and the cable-equalizer up and over the truss so the arm did not sag under a fully raised load. Overhead-style two-posts want careful hose routing to avoid pinch points, and border pole barns often have obstructions in the truss space (electrical, radiant heater flues) that need working around. If your barn is not clear-span above ten feet, plan an extra hour of routing per column.

What We Would Change and What Held Up

A year later the owner is on schedule with the restoration and the storage side has become the everyday parking spot for the SUV. What we would change is the two-post cable routing — we ran it on the driver-side column and it now interferes slightly with the welding cart parking spot. Next build we would spec the passenger-side column for the equalizer to keep the driver approach entirely clean. That is a minor change but it comes up every day of the build.

What held up perfectly was the four-post choice and the column-pad strategy. The car lift for storage has been raised and lowered forty-plus times in the first year, with zero lock-latch issues, no cable wear, and no runway warp.
