A vehicle collector in Ames called us in early spring about a car lift for the pole barn he was finishing on the north side of town. He wanted to store one project and one driver stacked in the same bay so he could keep the third stall clear for the pickup. This is the first-year ownership story: from the first spec conversation through slab pour, install day, first wheel-bearing service on the project car, and where he landed after 12 months of daily use. Spec Conversation: The First 30 Minutes

The collector wanted to stack two vehicles: a 1970 project sitting up top for long-term work, and a driver he could pull down whenever he wanted to drive it. That is 4-post storage territory. A 2-post is not the right car lift for stacking. He also wanted the flexibility to move the lift to another bay if the pole barn layout changed, which pushed him toward a freestanding rolling 4-post with caster kits.

Capacity math: the driver is a mid-1990s coupe at 3,500 lb. The project is a 1970 muscle car at about 3,700 lb loaded with parts on the floor pan while he works on it. Add 10% margin and you land under 8,000 lb — but we recommend a 9,000 lb rated 4-post storage lift as the sensible next step up. Extra capacity is free headroom for peace of mind and does not cost much more at that class. He agreed. We ordered a BendPak 9K storage 4-post with the caster kit and drip trays for on top.

Pole Barn Prep: Slab, Ceiling, and Layout

The pole barn was already framed at 40 feet by 30 feet with 14-foot clear ceiling. Slab was fresh 5-inch 4,000 PSI concrete, which was overkill for a freestanding 4-post (no anchoring required) but perfect if he ever wanted to add an anchored 2-post later. Ceiling of 14 feet gave us room to stack a full-height coupe on top of the 4-post at 7 feet of platform height with the project car above and still have plenty of headroom to walk under the driver on the ground.

Layout: we positioned the 4-post lift on the north wall of the third stall so the runway aligned with the overhead door for straight drive-on. That gave the collector 8 feet of clear walk-around on the driver’s side and 5 feet on the passenger side, which is enough for a rolling tool cart. The lay-out sketch we mailed him with the quote is the same one that got taped to the pole barn wall during install day, unchanged. Good planning does not need revision.

Install Day: What Actually Happens

Two of our techs arrived at 8 AM with the lift on a flatbed. Freight unload took 40 minutes with the pole barn’s own tractor loader. The 4-post storage lift ships in five pieces (four column-and-runway subassemblies plus the cross members and hydraulics), and assembly took 4 hours including the cable routing and hydraulic bleed. First cycle test happened at 2 PM. Cycle-to-full-height took about 45 seconds. Safety hook engagement was crisp on all four positions.

Total install time on a freestanding 4-post is 5 to 7 hours from arrival to walk-away. Compare that to an anchored 2-post, which typically runs 4 to 6 hours plus concrete cure time on any patch work. The freestanding storage 4-post is the fastest install we do, and it is a big part of why so many Ames collectors choose it as their first car lift purchase.

First Load: Driving the Project Car On

The 1970 project was low, wide, and had a mild suspension drop the previous owner had installed. Standard approach ramps on a 4-post storage lift have an approach angle of about 8 to 10 degrees, which fits most vehicles. For this project car, we swapped to the low-clearance ramps that BendPak sells as an accessory (a longer, shallower angle). That let the collector drive on without scraping the front air dam.

If you have a lowered vehicle in your collection, order the low-clearance ramps at the same time as the lift. Retro-fitting them later works fine, but it is $180 to $240 in shipping you can avoid. The collector’s project is now up on the top platform with the driver on the ground under it, exactly the stacked storage he wanted. First time seeing the two cars stacked in the pole barn, he said the whole build was worth it. The car lift purchase paid off on day one.

First Service: Wheel Bearing on the Project Car

Three months in, the collector needed to pull the front wheel bearings on the project car for repack. Standard workflow on a 4-post: drive the driver out of the pole barn, lower the project to the ground, drive it off the runways, then position it back on and lift to working height. That is slower than a 2-post, where you just swing the arms and lift. But for a project car that is mostly parked, the workflow suits the use case.

Alternative workflow: park a floor jack under the front axle after driving on, lift the front wheels off the runway. That gives you wheels-free access at the front while the rear stays on the runways. He picked up a low-profile floor jack for exactly this workflow, and the wheel-bearing job took 2 hours end to end. He had done the same job on jack stands the year before and it had taken 5 hours. The car lift saved him 3 hours on the first non-trivial service job.

Month Six: What He Would Do Differently

The one thing he would change: he would have added the caster kit to the second column set from the start, not just the outer columns. Rolling a fully loaded 4-post storage lift requires all four columns to move, and the outer-only caster kit made repositioning a two-person job. Adding the second-column caster kit fixed it and now he moves the lift himself.

Other than that, no regrets. The lift has cycled about 65 times in the first six months (once per week average, plus service events). Zero hydraulic leaks, zero cable adjustments needed, zero warranty callbacks. Fluid level is unchanged from the initial fill. The collector’s overall assessment at month six: this car lift belongs in every serious collector’s garage and the payback is not measured in dollars, it is measured in the number of times you can walk into the pole barn and enjoy the collection at eye level.

Month Twelve: First-Year Wrap

End of year one, the collector has run the lift 92 cycles. No service work required beyond a visual inspection at month 6 (we came by, walked around the lift, checked cable tension, checked safety hook engagement, and left). Next scheduled service is fluid check at month 24. He has not paid us a service dime after install, and he does not expect to for another year at least.

Total cost of ownership year one: purchase price plus install, plus the low-clearance ramp accessory, plus the extra caster kit, plus his own floor jack. Total downtime: zero. Total vehicles stacked: two. He is thinking about a second lift in the far bay of the pole barn to add capacity for a boat and a third project. That is the tell. When someone starts pricing their second car lift within the first year of owning their first one, we know we got the spec right.
