A weekend hobbyist mechanic in western Illinois emailed us last month with a simple request: he wanted a car lift for his 30×40 pole barn so he could do his own daily maintenance on the family fleet without lying on his back on the cold concrete. He had a budget, a building, and a good attitude about getting the right lift the first time. His question was equally simple: what should he check before he clicks buy? This pre-purchase checklist is the answer we sent him, expanded a little so any weekend mechanic thinking through the same purchase has a real list to work from. It applies whether you are in western Illinois, Iowa, or across the Midwest.

1. Measure Your Slab Thickness Honestly
The first item on any weekend mechanic’s pre-purchase checklist is measuring the actual concrete slab thickness in the exact spot the car lift will sit. Not the nominal thickness the builder wrote on the plans a decade ago. Not the thickness of the slab your neighbor said his contractor poured. The real thickness of your specific slab in the anchor footprint. The only way to know is to core-drill a small test hole, and any lift installer worth talking to will do that as part of the pre-quote site visit.
For a 10,000 lb two-post car lift you want at minimum four inches of 3,000 psi concrete under the anchor pattern. For a four-post storage lift the requirement is a little more forgiving because the load is spread across four columns rather than concentrated on two. Slab thickness is the single most common surprise cost in a home garage lift purchase, and finding out early is far cheaper than finding out on install day.
2. Check for Rebar in the Slab
Slab thickness is only half the concrete story. The other half is whether the slab has rebar or wire mesh reinforcement inside it, and where that reinforcement sits vertically within the pour. A four-inch slab with a proper rebar grid at mid-depth is much stronger than a four-inch slab poured plain. Older pole-barn slabs were often poured without reinforcement because the owner was told it was optional. It was optional. It was also a mistake.
You can usually confirm rebar presence with a metal detector or a rebar-finder tool run across the slab surface. If the slab has no rebar and it is only four inches thick, we would recommend erring toward a lower-capacity car lift or upgrading the slab in the lift footprint before install. A weekend mechanic doing his own maintenance does not need a 12,000 lb lift; a well-installed 9,000 lb or 10,000 lb frame is plenty for the family fleet, and the smaller frame is easier on a marginal slab.
3. Confirm Effective Ceiling Height, Not Nominal
Nominal ceiling height is what the pole-barn manufacturer wrote on the plans. Effective ceiling height is the actual distance from the floor to the lowest thing hanging above the lift footprint, which is usually a truss chord, a radiant tube heater, or an overhead light. That effective clearance is what limits how high the car lift can raise a vehicle. For a weekend mechanic doing daily maintenance, you want the vehicle’s frame at roughly your standing shoulder height so you can work under it comfortably.
A twelve-foot nominal ceiling with trusses and lighting typically gives effective clearance of about eleven feet. That is enough for a standard two-post lift with most passenger cars and light trucks but starts getting tight for taller SUVs. If the effective clearance is less than that, look at a baseplate two-post lift instead of overhead, or step down to a low-rise scissor for tighter buildings. Do not guess at this. Measure with a tape.
4. Verify Your Electrical Service
Most 10,000 lb two-post car lifts run on single-phase 220V at a specific amperage. Your home garage or pole barn probably has 240V service to the panel, but you need a dedicated circuit at the correct amperage sized for the lift’s motor. Running the lift off an under-sized circuit is a fast way to burn out a motor. If the lift shares a circuit with a heater or a compressor, the shared circuit is the problem, not the lift.
For a weekend mechanic pole-barn build, we tell customers to add a dedicated lift circuit during the barn electrical rough-in if the barn is new construction, or to have an electrician add one before install if the barn is existing. The material cost is small. The install-day disaster of discovering the circuit is undersized is much larger. Confirm your electrician has a copy of the lift’s electrical spec sheet before he wires the circuit.
5. Decide Two-Post vs Four-Post Before You Shop
Two-post car lifts are better for underneath service work: oil changes, brake jobs, exhaust, transmission service. Four-post lifts are better for long-term storage, alignment, and any work that requires the wheels to be loaded on runways. A weekend mechanic doing general daily maintenance almost always wants a two-post as the primary lift, because the underneath access is dramatically better than a four-post gives you.
If you also want to store one vehicle overhead while parking another underneath, a four-post is the right platform for the storage function, and you can add a rolling jack to enable some underneath service. But if the primary use case is service, buy a two-post first and think about storage separately. The mistake many hobbyist buyers make is buying a four-post as a compromise between service and storage and then being frustrated that neither function feels right. Pick your primary use case honestly and buy the lift that fits it.
6. Plan the Bay Layout Before You Order
Before you click buy on any car lift, sketch the bay layout with the lift in position and think through where you will stand during common jobs. Where does your creeper go? Where does the drain pan sit during an oil change? Where do you reach for tools without walking around the vehicle? Where is your compressor and how long is the air hose run? Where do you park the vehicle before it goes on the lift?
The best weekend mechanics we have installed for spent an afternoon on graph paper before ordering anything. That afternoon is worth its weight in avoided regret. Small decisions like which side the lift columns face, whether the tool cabinet is on the left or the right, and how many air drops you have in the bay all become permanent once the lift is bolted down. A car lift install is not something you rip out and reposition; get the layout right the first time.
7. Confirm the Installer Will Actually Cycle-Test
The last item on the pre-purchase checklist is not about the equipment; it is about who installs it. A proper install of any car lift includes cycling the lift under load, verifying every safety-cam notch engages on both columns, torquing anchors to spec, and walking through the operating procedure with the owner. That commissioning step is where latent problems get caught, and any installer who skips it is not doing the job right.
Ask any installer you are considering whether the commissioning cycle-test is included in the install quote. If they hesitate or say it is extra, keep looking.
