When an Iowa City diesel and trailer repair shop reached out to us about their first serious car lift install, oil pan gasket work was the number-one job on their whiteboard. They were tired of dropping Duramax and Cummins pans onto rolling floor jacks and swearing at pinched fingers. Twelve months after we finished their install, that same shop is running two techs on gasket, injector, and turbo jobs six days a week, and their throughput has roughly doubled. This is the honest first-year ownership story of an Iowa City car lift purchase, told from the crew that spec’d it, installed it, and returned for the first-year checkup. An Iowa City Diesel Shop’s First Twelve Months

The shop is a two-bay outfit tucked off a county road east of Iowa City, run by a father-son team with about thirty years of combined diesel experience. They had been getting by with a set of 12-ton bottle jacks and steel stands for a decade. That works fine for tire rotation and light brake jobs, but it falls apart the moment you start pulling oil pans off a Ford 6.7 Powerstroke. The father called us in January of last year after his son threw out his back for the third time in twelve months.

Our first site visit lasted about ninety minutes. We measured the slab, verified the ceiling clear height at 12 feet 3 inches, and walked through their typical job mix. Roughly 60 percent of their revenue was diesel gasket, injector, and turbo work. Another 25 percent was routine service on light trucks, and the rest was miscellaneous suspension, exhaust, and driveline. A single 10,000-pound clear-floor two-post was the obvious anchor purchase, and we suggested they add a rolling floor jack later once the first year of cash flow stabilized. That plan is exactly how it played out.

Oil Pan Gasket Work and Why Overhead Access Matters

Oil pan gasket work is the job that separates a real service bay from a driveway. On a 6.7 Powerstroke, the pan-drop procedure requires supporting the engine, unbolting motor mounts, and pulling the pan straight down through a narrow crossmember window. Done on floor jacks, it is a two-person job with your face inches from ninety pounds of gray iron, and the reassembly torque sequence is almost impossible to do right when you are laying flat. On a properly configured car lift, the same job becomes a one-tech operation with an engine support and gravity working with you instead of against you.

The Iowa City shop reported that their first ten oil pan jobs on the new lift averaged 4.2 hours versus their pre-lift baseline of 6.5 hours. That is a 35 percent time reduction on their most common repair. Multiply that by 40 to 60 pan jobs a year and the labor savings alone pay for the equipment. The overhead access under the truck also let them redesign their tool cart layout: torque wrenches, gasket scrapers, and RTV cartridges hang on a rolling pegboard now, and their tech barely leaves the bay during a full gasket replacement. Small workflow wins add up fast.

Comparing Rotary SPO12 and Challenger CL12 Models

We put two 12,000-pound clear-floor models on their table: the Rotary SPO12 and the Challenger CL12. At the 12K capacity tier, the extra 2,000 pounds of headroom over a 10K unit costs about 15 percent more up front but gives real breathing room on 3/4-ton and 1-ton diesel trucks that already sit close to 8,500 pounds curb weight before you add a service body or dual-fuel tank. For a shop primarily servicing Powerstroke, Cummins, and Duramax platforms, the 12K tier is the right pick.

The Rotary SPO12 posts stand roughly 12 feet 8 inches tall with a max rise of 74 inches. The Challenger CL12 comes in about an inch shorter in overall column height with equivalent max rise. Both are ALI-certified, both use dual-cylinder direct drive, and both offer optional three-stage front arms for reaching low-clearance sports cars if the shop ever picks up that kind of work. The tiebreaker for the Iowa City shop came down to parts stock. We keep every common Rotary cable, sheave, and cylinder seal in our warehouse. Challenger parts we can source in two to three days. What the Install Looked Like in a 40-Foot Bay

Install day started at 7 a.m. with a two-person crew, a rotary hammer, and a diamond core bit. Their bay is 40 feet deep by 24 feet wide, and the lift went in 15 feet from the overhead door — deep enough to allow a full-length one-ton dually to sit centered with room to walk around the front and rear. We laid out the anchor pattern using a paper template supplied with the lift, hammer-drilled each of the ten anchor holes to the required depth, vacuumed the holes, and epoxied the anchor studs one at a time.

Post-plumb takes longer than most first-time owners expect. We use a laser level to verify both columns are within 1/16 inch of vertical, then set the base plate shims accordingly. Cable routing, cylinder hookup, and hydraulic bleed took another ninety minutes. By 1 p.m. the lift was fully commissioned, tested with a load, and demonstrated to both techs. Total install time was about six hours including a lunch break. That is a typical timeline for a well-prepped shop with clean slab and no surprises. First Service Call: Cable Tension Retorque

Every new two-post car lift needs a cable tension retorque within the first ninety days of service. Steel cables stretch under initial load cycles, and if you skip the retorque, the sheaves start slipping and the platforms unlevel themselves gradually. The Iowa City shop called us at week eleven when they noticed a half-inch offset between the two carriages at full extension. We were on their doorstep the next morning with a torque wrench and a fresh set of cable-end nuts.

The retorque itself took about thirty minutes. We lowered the platforms fully, checked cable free-play at both bottom sheaves, and torqued each cable-end fastener to the manufacturer spec of 45 foot-pounds. After a test cycle to full rise, we rechecked and both carriages were within 1/8 inch — the ALI-acceptable tolerance. We also topped off the hydraulic reservoir, inspected the safety locks on both columns, and gave them a printed maintenance schedule for months 6, 12, 18, and 24. That maintenance schedule is one of the things that separates a lift you own for twenty years from a lift you replace at year eight. Fluid, Cylinder, and Hose Realities Year One

Hydraulic fluid on a properly commissioned lift should not need replacement in year one, and this one did not. What did happen at month nine was a minor bleed on one of the cylinder rod seals — a small pool of oil the size of a dinner plate under the passenger-side column. We ordered a new rod seal, drove out on a Saturday, and swapped it in about ninety minutes. Total cost to the shop: a service call, a $22 seal kit, and no lost billing time because we did the work on their off day.

Hose condition is worth checking at every oil change interval. UV exposure, welding sparks, and hydraulic pressure cycling all age the outer sleeve. On this install, we routed the high-pressure hose behind the column with an armored sleeve, which kept it clean and protected all year. The tank vent, the return line, and the pressure gauge were all still in factory-fresh condition at the twelve-month mark. That is what a well-installed car lift looks like at year one when everyone does their job right. Nothing dramatic, no crisis, no downtime — just a smooth-running piece of equipment that pays for itself.

The Iowa City Shop’s Verdict After One Year

At the twelve-month sit-down, the owner said the car lift was the single best equipment decision he had made in a decade of running the shop. Revenue per bay was up 42 percent year over year, and his son’s back pain was gone. He had also picked up three new dealership referral accounts because he could now say yes to same-day diesel work that his competitors were farming out.
