Rural farm shop owners along the Iowa-Illinois corridor have a use case that most equipment dealers do not spec well. The shop has to service a Silverado on Monday, a family sedan on Tuesday, and by Friday afternoon it might be doing a wheel alignment on the neighbor’s F-350. A car lift for that shop cannot be a light-duty two-post pulled from the home-garage catalog, and it cannot be a full commercial alignment rack that eats half the working floor. Somewhere in the middle is the right answer, and this pre-purchase checklist is the same one we walk every farm-shop buyer through at Auto Lift Services.

Building Envelope: Bay Length, Width, and Ceiling

The first item on our farm-shop checklist is the bay envelope. An alignment-capable four-post car lift needs about twenty-eight feet of drive-on clearance for a full-size dually to roll on cleanly, or twenty-four feet minimum for a short-bed half-ton or SUV. Column-to-column width for most alignment four-posts is around a hundred fifty inches outside, so you need at least thirteen feet of clear bay width with room to open doors on both sides.

Ceiling height on a four-post drive-on is more forgiving than a two-post. Fully raised, a four-post typically stands seven to eight feet at the top of the runway, so any Iowa-Illinois corridor pole barn with twelve-foot walls has plenty of headroom. That said, if you plan to do any over-the-head work, add another two feet for a raised air line, an unwind reel, or an overhead crane rail. We spec the ceiling with the tools in mind, not just the bare lift dimension, because retrofit ceiling height is always more expensive than up-front planning.

Alignment-Ready Runway Features

Not every four-post car lift is alignment-ready, and this is where a lot of farm-shop buyers get burned by online sellers. A true alignment lift has front turnplate pockets, rear slip plates, and runways manufactured within tighter parallel and flatness tolerances than a standard storage or service four-post. The turnplate pockets accept a swappable set of turnplates that let you steer the vehicle through its full lock-to-lock range while measuring toe change. Rear slip plates decouple the rear axle so you can set thrust angle without fighting friction.

The Rotary SM14 alignment rack and the Challenger AR4115 are the two most common alignment four-posts we spec into farm shops that are stepping up into alignment work. Both accept aftermarket turnplates and slip plates. Retrofitting a non-alignment four-post to align vehicles is theoretically possible but almost never works out; the runway tolerances are the constraint, and you cannot machine a set of stamped runways flat after the fact. Start with an alignment-ready platform if alignment is on the table now or five years from now.

Load Rating for Mixed Farm and Passenger Vehicles

Sizing a car lift for a mixed farm fleet is different from sizing one for a suburban home garage. A one-ton dually with a service body loaded for field work can weigh 9,500 pounds. A tandem-axle grain truck is way outside a car lift’s scope and needs a heavy-duty mobile-column setup or an inground unit. For everything short of a grain truck — pickups, SUVs, service trucks, family sedans, and even most light medium-duty flatbeds — a 14,000 lb four-post with alignment features covers the range with margin to spare.

We do not spec 12,000 lb for farm shops even when the current fleet fits. Farm operations change — a new tractor implement leads to a new service truck, or a spouse’s SUV gets replaced with a heavier three-quarter-ton. Fourteen thousand pounds gives room for whatever the next five years brings. The price delta between a 12K and a 14K alignment four-post is usually under fifteen percent and worth every dollar the first time a heavier truck shows up in the bay.

Concrete and Anchor Requirements Along the Corridor

Farm-shop concrete along the Iowa-Illinois corridor is wildly variable. New machine-shed pours in the last ten years are usually six inches at 4,000 psi with heavy rebar because operators are storing thirty-thousand pound combines on them. Older shop slabs poured in the seventies and eighties can be three to four inches with light wire mesh or no reinforcement at all. Most four-post lifts do not require anchoring — they sit under their own weight — but if you spec an alignment four-post with the optional bolt-down kit for stability, that changes the story.

We always inspect the slab before install. If the slab is not up to spec, the fix is a cut-and-pour under the column footprints only, which is much cheaper than a whole-bay tear-out. For a rural buyer where every trip out from Ames or Bettendorf costs windshield time, we can often do the inspection during the initial install trip and quote the repair on the spot. That saves a week or two versus scheduling a separate inspection visit before the equipment lands.

Rotary vs Challenger Alignment Rack Comparison

The two most common alignment-capable models we ship into corridor farm shops are the Rotary SM14 and the Challenger AR4115. Both are ALI Gold, both handle 14,000 pounds, both accept industry-standard turnplates. The differences that matter for a farm buyer are the runway length options, the caster kit availability, and the parts pipeline. Rotary has slightly wider service coverage and slightly longer parts availability on legacy units. Challenger is often a few hundred dollars cheaper on the initial invoice and ships from a closer distribution point.

We recommend the SM14 for shops that want the longest-possible service life and the tightest parts availability, and the AR4115 for shops that want to save money on the front-end and are comfortable with a slightly younger parts catalog. Both units integrate with any modern imaging-based alignment machine — Hunter, John Bean, or Ranger — and we can spec the alignment machine separately once the car lift is chosen. Note that on Iowa alignment machines specifically we only carry Hunter Engineering.

Optional Accessories Worth the Extra Line Item

The accessory list on a farm-shop car lift is where a lot of long-term value hides. A caster kit runs three hundred to five hundred dollars and lets you roll the lift out from the wall to reach the back of a vehicle or to reconfigure the bay when a wider piece of equipment needs floor space. A rolling jack turns the four-post into a wheels-free lift for tire and brake work, which is essential if you plan to do rotations and rotor swaps in the same bay you do alignments.

Air-line kit is another one we recommend on almost every rural install. Running compressed air up the column to a shop-height outlet at the runway means you can hit an impact gun on a lug nut without dragging a hose across the bay. On a mixed-use farm shop with the compressor at the far wall, that saves the tech real time on every job. Bolt-on drive-over ramps and an alignment turnplate storage tray round out the standard add-on list. Most buyers end up with three or four accessories on the final invoice.

Delivery, Install Timing, and Cross-State Service

We install a car lift anywhere in the Iowa-Illinois corridor as part of our normal service area.
