A serious commercial-grade car lift uses forged swivel pins, hardened arm restraints with a positive mechanical lock, and telescoping tubes with replaceable wear pads. Concrete, Anchors, And The 20-Year Foundation
The lift is only as safe as what it is bolted to. Manufacturers spec 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum for a standard commercial two-post, and 6 inches for anything above 15,000 lb capacity. In older Waterloo shops the slab is often 3.5 inches of 2,500 PSI, and it was poured before your dad bought the building. We core-drill and test whenever there is doubt. Cables, Sheaves, And Cylinders: The Wear Story
On a two-post, the equalizer cables are the single most inspected wear item. Every commercial car lift in Iowa should be inspected annually by a qualified inspector under ANSI/ALI ALOIM. Our techs are trained on the checklist and we run inspections across the state. On a two-post we are checking column plumb, arm restraint engagement, swivel play, cable tension and condition, sheave wear, hydraulic pressure and leak-down, electrical, and every safety-lock ratchet on both columns. It takes about an hour done right.
ALI Gold certification is the label to look for on the lift itself. It means the design was third-party tested to the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard — not just self-certified by a factory nobody has heard of.
