Why Arm Restraints Matter More Than You Think
Arm restraints are the single most-ignored feature on a two-post car lift, and the one that costs shops the most when they fail. The restraints are the ratcheting collars at the base of each swing arm — their job is to lock the arm in the exact position where you set your pickup points, so no amount of side load or vibration walks the arm out from under the vehicle. When a technician is dropping a transmission that weighs three hundred to six hundred pounds, that side load is real, and a restraint that clicks two or three notches instead of a solid ten is a warning sign the shop should never ignore.
We inspect arm restraints on every service call, and we teach fleet managers to do the same weekly. Look for a firm, positive click on every swing, no visible slop between the arm and the base collar, and matching restraint behavior on all four arms. If a restraint has to be forced, or if it disengages on its own, we replace it — not clean it, not lube it. The Safety Cams You Can Hear, and the Ones You Can’t
Every commercial car lift built to ALI standards has a mechanical safety lock system — usually a set of cam bars or lock ladders that engage automatically as the lift rises. On a properly maintained two-post, you should hear a distinct clack every few inches of travel as the safeties click into position. That sound is your friend. It tells you the mechanical backup is working before you ever trust the hydraulic system to hold weight.
The safeties you cannot hear are the ones that scare us. A silent lift is not a safe lift — it means either the cam springs are broken, the release cable has been pulled tight, or the mechanism has been zip-tied out of the way by a previous owner who thought the noise was a nuisance. We have found all three during service calls on used lifts, and every one of them is a shutdown-until-repaired condition. For fleet transmission work, we tell customers to always set the lift onto its safeties before anyone slides underneath. Never trust hydraulic pressure alone to hold a vehicle for the twenty or forty minutes a transmission drop takes.
A Pre-Lift Checklist for Transmission Drops
Before the vehicle ever leaves the ground for a transmission service, we run our fleet crews through a short checklist. First, verify vehicle weight against the lift capacity — a fully-loaded municipal van with tools and a spare tire can easily push five thousand pounds before you add a transmission jack. Second, position the swing arms so the pickup pads sit on the manufacturer-designated lift points, not on a pinch weld or a plastic panel. Third, raise the vehicle six inches and stop. Bounce test each corner by hand before going higher.
Once the lift is at working height, always drop it onto the safety locks. Then position your transmission jack directly under the pan, take up the weight before removing any bolts, and confirm the jack head engages the pan without side loading. When a driveline drops onto a poorly-positioned jack, it can walk the entire vehicle sideways on the pads, and that is when a car lift becomes dangerous. Anchor Bolts, Concrete Depth, and Why We Verify Both
The lift itself is only as safe as the concrete it stands on. Two-post lifts pull hundreds of pounds of tension out of each anchor bolt every time a heavy vehicle is raised, and thin or cracked concrete will fail long before the steel does. We specify a minimum of four inches of properly cured concrete at 3,000 PSI for most passenger-vehicle two-post installs, and we bump that to six inches for anything above 12,000 pounds capacity. Fleet garages built in the 1970s and 1980s along the Iowa-Missouri border frequently have three inches of slab over dirt, and that is a real problem.
Before we install a car lift in an existing building, we core-drill a test sample in each column location so the customer knows exactly what they are working with. If the slab is thin, we quote a saw-cut and pour so the anchor pad is safe. Owners sometimes push back on the extra cost, but a lift that shifts under load is not a lift you want your best technician standing under. We would rather lose the sale than install onto bad concrete.
Weight Rating vs. Real-World Fleet Loads
The plated capacity on a car lift is the maximum evenly-distributed load — not the maximum load in every configuration. A 10,000 pound two-post is not the right lift for a fully-loaded 9,500 pound cube van, because loaded vans are back-heavy, and the axle bias can put more than the rated per-arm load on the rear pads. We size fleet lifts by the heaviest vehicle in the fleet, plus a twenty percent safety margin, plus the working weight of jacks and technicians who may be on the vehicle at the same time.
For municipal fleets that mix light service trucks with heavier one-tons, we usually recommend a 12,000 or 15,000 pound two-post with tall columns and a three-stage front arm. That combination lets a technician lift a Ford F-350 or a Chevy 3500 without the front pads walking off the frame rails. What Fleet Managers Get Wrong About Annual Inspections
ALI-certified annual inspections are not optional for commercial lifts in most jurisdictions, and they are not the same thing as the visual walkaround your technicians do every morning. A proper annual inspection covers hydraulic pressure testing, safety-latch function under load, cable and chain wear measurement, arm-restraint tooth engagement, and structural weld inspection. It takes a certified inspector between one and three hours per lift, and it produces a written report you file for your insurance carrier.
Fleet managers commonly assume their in-house maintenance staff can sign off the annual — they usually cannot, and their insurance policy usually requires a third-party inspection. First, any cable, chain, or equalizer replacement — the tensioning procedure on modern two-post and four-post lifts has to be done in a specific sequence, and getting it wrong loads one column disproportionately. Second, any structural weld repair — a cracked column or arm is a total replacement, not a repair, and we will not certify a welded structural member.
Third, any hydraulic power unit swap. The plumbing routing matters, the fluid choice matters, and the pressure relief setting matters.
