A car lift purchase for a municipal fleet in northwest Iowa is a different conversation than a car lift for a body shop. The buyer is a fleet manager, not a wrench-turner, and the vehicles range from patrol cars to snowplows to the occasional restoration project the shop takes on for the county historical society. Safety questions dominate the conversation because the fleet manager has to answer to a city council if anything goes wrong. Last spring we walked through this exact scenario with a manager near Sioux Center, and the sequence of questions we worked through is the safety-first checklist we use with every fleet buyer.

Step One: Confirm the ALI Gold Certification in Writing
Fleet buyers cannot rely on ad copy. Every car lift we recommend for a municipal or county buyer must have a current ALI Gold certification for the exact model being sold, not for a similarly named model in a different capacity. The Automotive Lift Institute publishes a public directory of certified models. Anybody can search it. Before signing a purchase order, print the ALI listing for the specific model and file it with the quote. If a vendor cannot produce a Gold certificate that matches the model number on the invoice, walk away.
For the Sioux Center manager, we pulled the certification listing for the 14,000 lb 4-post we specified and attached it to the quote before he ever asked. That single document did more to move the purchase through the council than any marketing brochure. Governmental buyers are trained to look for third-party verification, and the ALI Gold mark is one of the few in the lift industry that carries real regulatory weight. A car lift without it is not a fleet-grade purchase.
Step Two: Verify the Slab Meets the Loaded-Column Point Load
The next safety step is the concrete. Every lift manufacturer publishes a minimum slab thickness and PSI rating for the loaded-column point load. On a 14,000 lb 4-post, the columns are freestanding, but each column still transmits several thousand pounds of point load to the slab. The manufacturer minimum is typically 4 inches at 3,000 PSI, and we do not install any lift on less than that. For older fleet shops, the slab is often 6 inches or thicker, which is fine. For newer prefab buildings, the slab may be exactly 4 inches, which is the floor.
If the slab is unknown, we require a core sample or a written certification from the general contractor before we bring the lift out. That may add a week to the timeline. It is not optional. A car lift installed on an under-rated slab is a safety incident waiting to happen, and no cost saving on install is worth the liability exposure to a municipal buyer. Restoration and metal work compounds the risk because vehicles at height often sit for days.
Step Three: Walk the Mechanical Locks Before Every Purchase
Every serviceable car lift has mechanical locks. On a 4-post, the locks engage at the columns and physically prevent the runways from dropping if hydraulic pressure fails. On a 2-post, the locks are at the columns and engage carriage teeth. The safety-first buyer physically operates the locks during the demo, not just watches the salesperson operate them. Feel the click. Confirm the lock pins seat fully. Confirm the release mechanism drops the locks smoothly without binding.
We walk fleet buyers through a lock demonstration on every quote conversation. It takes ten minutes and it prevents the most common failure mode we see in older lifts — worn or bent lock teeth that no longer engage reliably. When we take over an annual inspection contract on an existing lift, the first thing we test is the locks. Any lift where the locks do not engage on the first try goes out of service until the parts are replaced. That policy applies whether the lift is one year old or twenty.
Step Four: Read the Slack-Cable and Slack-Chain Safety
A 4-post car lift has a slack-cable safety. A 2-post can have a slack-chain safety. Both are designed to catch the lift if a cable or chain breaks or goes slack. Both need to be tested annually and both need to be inspected visually before every long-dwell job. The Florida customer we sometimes reference in training — the one who got a car stuck at height because a cylinder was leaking and he did not know the model of his lift — is a case study in what happens when nobody tests the safety systems. Do not be that shop.
For the northwest Iowa fleet, we specified a car lift model where the slack-cable safety can be tested by a technician standing on the ground with a pull cord, no ladder required. That accessibility matters because busy fleets skip tests when they are hard to reach. Every daily safety check should be doable in under a minute, or it will not happen. We build that expectation into every fleet purchase we spec.
Step Five: Match Capacity to the Heaviest Vehicle Plus 20 Percent
Fleet vehicles are heavier than they used to be. A modern patrol car is closer to 4,500 lb loaded. A snowplow is 12,000 to 18,000 lb depending on configuration. A dump truck is well over 25,000 lb. The safety-first capacity rule is heaviest expected vehicle plus 20 percent. For a fleet that includes plows and dumps, that means a 30,000 lb heavy-duty lift at minimum. For a fleet that stops at patrol cars and light trucks, 14,000 lb covers everything with margin.
The Sioux Center manager originally asked for a 9,000 lb 4-post because that is what his previous shop had. We walked him through the fleet inventory, added up the current curb weights, and showed him that a snowplow with a full salt hopper would already exceed a 9,000 lb capacity. He upsized to 14,000 lb and left the heavy trucks on a separate 30,000 lb bay that we quoted separately. Splitting the capacity across two car lifts is the safe answer whenever the fleet range is that wide.
Step Six: Schedule the Annual Inspection Before Delivery
A fleet-grade purchase includes the annual inspection contract from year one, not year two. We schedule the first inspection twelve months after the install date and put it on the calendar before the lift ships. That way the shop never operates a car lift that is out of ALI’s recommended inspection cadence, and the fleet manager never has to answer a council question about whether the equipment has been maintained. Written inspection reports go into the maintenance file for as long as the lift is in service.
The inspection covers cables, sheaves, cylinders, hoses, locks, safeties, powerpack, and slab witness marks. Anything found is documented with photos and quoted for immediate repair. Small consumables like grease and lock pins are usually replaced during the inspection itself. Larger items like cables or cylinders are scheduled for a follow-up visit. The whole process takes two to three hours for a typical municipal shop lift and costs less than a single wheel bearing job at shop rates.
Step Seven: Train Every User on the Manual Before Turnover
The final safety step is training. A car lift comes with a manual that covers daily checks, monthly checks, annual checks, weight ratings, adapter placement, and emergency lowering. For a municipal shop with rotating techs, we do a live training on install day where every current user runs through the manual with us. We also provide a laminated quick-reference card that stays at the lift. New hires get the same walkthrough before they operate the lift solo, and we document the training in the shop’s safety file.
For the Sioux Center install, we trained six technicians and the fleet manager on the same day. Total training time was about ninety minutes. Every one of them signed a training log that lives with the maintenance file.
