Sequencing a garage build-out around the right car lift is what separates a Council Bluffs restoration shop that runs smoothly from one that fights its own layout for a decade. A crew chief we worked with on a race and restoration build last spring called us before the concrete truck arrived, and that phone call saved him roughly eleven thousand dollars in rework. Get the order right and every downstream choice is easier. Get it wrong and you rebuild a bay to fit a lift you already own.

Step one: honest budget bracket before you shop lifts
The first decision is not brand and not configuration. It is what tier of car lift you can actually finance without stalling the rest of the build. We break restoration-shop budgets into three brackets: entry commercial, working commercial, and heavy commercial. Entry brackets buy a solid ALI Gold two-post from Challenger or Atlas at ten to twelve thousand pounds. Working brackets add asymmetric arms, taller columns, and Rotary-tier build quality. That combination handles ninety percent of restoration workflow: pull a body off a frame on the two-post, roll a rolling-chassis project onto the four-post while you TIG-weld patch panels. Skipping the middle tier to save money on the first bay almost always means the shop replaces that car lift inside five years.
Step two: measure ceiling and pour spec before you order
Ceiling height dictates whether you can run a symmetric overhead two-post, a floor-plate two-post, or a low-profile scissor. Standard restoration bays we see across the Missouri River corridor run twelve to fourteen feet. Twelve is workable for a floor-plate lift. Fourteen opens up overhead two-post and comfortable lifted-truck clearance. Sixteen gives you room to raise a body shell off a frame and still walk under it. Do not guess this number — pull a tape and measure to the lowest obstruction, not the roof peak.
The concrete slab is the other measurement nobody thinks about until it is too late. A two-post car lift wants four to six inches of at-least-3000-PSI concrete under each column, and a four-post drive-on can live on thinner slab. If the pour has not happened yet, this is the moment to talk to your builder about isolated pads under the future column locations. We have specced dozens of these for Iowa and Nebraska shops. The extra concrete pours for about eight hundred dollars up front and saves a saw-cut-and-repour bill later.
Step three: capacity target for restoration vehicle mix
Restoration mix is deceptively heavy. A stripped body shell weighs almost nothing, but a rolling chassis with fully dressed drivetrain on a two-post is easily seven thousand pounds. Add a race hauler in and out for chassis-setup weekends and you are living at twelve thousand. We push restoration shops to a twelve-thousand-pound two-post as a floor, and to a fourteen or fifteen for shops that intend to hoist heavy trucks, panel vans, or vintage pickups with straight-six iron.
On the four-post side, capacity is more about ramp length and column height than raw pounds. A ten-thousand-pound four-post car lift with extended runways gives you room to store a project underneath and roll a chassis on top. Fifteen-thousand-pound four-post units are our recommendation when the shop touches vintage trucks or when the owner wants headroom for future growth. It is easier to buy capacity you do not need yet than to replace a lift because the shop grew into a heavier vehicle mix.
Step four: symmetric, asymmetric, or truly heavy-duty
Symmetric two-post lifts put the vehicle centered between the columns, which is great for classic cars where door swing is not tight. Asymmetric rotates the vehicle back so the driver door clears the column — a huge win when you are climbing in and out of a project car repeatedly. For a Council Bluffs restoration and metal-fab shop the honest answer is usually asymmetric with rotated columns, because the crew opens doors a hundred times a day on projects that live on the lift for weeks.
Truly heavy-duty two-post — the fifteen and eighteen thousand pound tier — matters when your vehicle mix includes cabover trucks, ambulances, or restored military iron. It also matters for a race team that services the tow rig on the same lift as the race car. The cost delta from twelve to fifteen thousand pounds is usually only fifteen to twenty percent, so if the vehicle mix argues for it, we push the customer to spec up. A car lift you outgrow becomes a used lift, and used lifts are exactly the problem we told you to avoid.
Step five: pick two-post, four-post, or scissor by workflow
A restoration bay usually needs at least two of the three. Two-post is your teardown and reassembly bay: wheels off, suspension out, drivetrain lowered. Four-post is your alignment, storage, and long-duration project bay: cars can sit for weeks between paint stages without tying up your primary lift. Mid-rise scissor lifts are the underrated third bay for body-and-paint work, letting a crew work standing up on a body without eating overhead clearance.
For most Council Bluffs shops the correct sequence is a two-post first, four-post second, scissor third, in that order. Start-up-mode restoration operations sometimes want a four-post first because a single lift can also store an inventory car. That works, but plan the two-post bay location and slab prep on day one so the second lift is a phone call, not a construction project. Step six: brand and parts pipeline for the long haul

Parts pipeline is where a lot of race and restoration operations get burned by the imported-brand-of-the-month. When a cable, cylinder, or safety latch fails on race weekend, you need a supplier who can overnight the part. Asking us before you buy — not after — is the difference between a shop that runs and a shop that waits.
Step seven: locking the plan and executing the install
Once the decision tree is walked, the build-out itself is straightforward. Slab pours or saw-cuts happen first, ceiling work if needed, then lift delivery and install.
