A body shop foreman in western Illinois asked us last month what he should look for on a car lift beyond capacity and price, because he was tired of Google search results that all read like the same advertorial. Fair question. Once you are past sticker and pounds-rated, the two mechanical systems that separate a safe daily-use lift from a scary one are the arm restraints and the safety-cam engagement. This buyer’s guide walks through both — what they are, how they fail, and what to actually look for on the showroom floor or in the spec sheet before you commit to a purchase.

What arm restraints actually do

Arm restraints are the mechanical gears or pins that lock a two-post car lift’s swing arms in place once you have positioned the pads under the vehicle and started lifting. Without them, the arms are free to pivot, and a vehicle can walk on the pads under braking, cornering, or any sideways force applied by a tech. In restoration and body-shop work this matters more than in a general repair bay because you are pushing, pulling, and prying on panels while the vehicle is in the air.

The two dominant designs are gear-tooth restraints — small teeth that mesh into a matching gear ring on the column base — and pin-in-hole restraints that drop a hardened pin into one of a series of positions. Gear-tooth is more common on ALI Gold commercial lifts because it locks position in tiny increments and re-engages automatically as the arm sweeps. Pin-and-hole is cheaper to make, offers coarser locking positions, and requires the tech to manually reset. Both can be safe when built well. Only one — gear-tooth — is what we recommend for a body shop.

How arm restraints fail — and how to inspect them

Gear-tooth arm restraints fail three ways: teeth wear round from years of ratcheting, the return spring loses tension, or the mechanism gums up with dirt and grease and stops seating fully. All three are visible on inspection if you know what to look for. Pull the arm through its swing and listen for the audible click of every tooth engaging. Then push back against the ratchet and confirm it holds. If the click is inconsistent or the ratchet slips, the restraint needs service or replacement.

On a used car lift you are considering, this is a deal-killer if the arm restraints are worn and the seller has not budgeted for a rebuild. Replacement kits from Rotary or Challenger for their commercial two-post models are readily available — we stock them — but they cost real money and take time to install. On a new lift purchase, ask the sales rep to demonstrate the arm-restraint engagement on the showroom floor or on a video before you order. If they cannot, that tells you something about the lift.

Mechanical safety cams: your last line of defense

Mechanical safety cams are the toothed columns and spring-loaded latches that catch a car lift’s carriage at fixed intervals as it rises. If a cable equalization system loses tension, or a hydraulic hose fails, the safety cam is what stops the vehicle from falling. On a properly installed and maintained lift, you lift the vehicle to working height, then lower it one notch until the safety cams take the load. That means the vehicle is sitting on hardened steel, not on hydraulic pressure, while a tech is working under it.

Every ALI Gold certified two-post lift has mechanical safety cams on both columns. What varies is the engagement style: audible click, pull-cable release, or push-button electronic release. We prefer audible-click mechanical release on a body-shop lift because it is simple, positive, and does not depend on an electrical component that can fail. Every daily-use bay should train every tech to drop onto the cams before any work happens under the vehicle. That habit is the single highest-leverage safety practice we teach on install day.

Cable equalization and why it matters for safety

A two-post car lift keeps both columns rising at the same rate via a cable equalization system. Cables run from one column, over sheaves, across the top or bottom, and down to the other column. If the cables are properly tensioned, both carriages rise together and the vehicle stays level. If a cable stretches, wears, or breaks, the two columns can rise out of sync — and that is where safety cams earn their keep by catching the drift before it becomes a fall.

Cable inspection is an annual service item on every two-post lift. We measure cable diameter with a caliper, look for broken wire strands under a magnifier, check sheave-groove wear, and re-tension to the manufacturer spec. On a body shop lift running twenty cycles a day the cables usually go five to eight years before replacement. Skipping the annual check and hoping for the best is how a Nevada shop we know ended up with a fourteen-thousand-pound drive-on lift stuck three feet off the ground with a jammed hydraulic system.

Arm-restraint geometry for body-shop workflow

Body shops need a car lift that swings arms freely between vehicles because the mix rotates constantly — sedan, pickup, SUV, sedan. Asymmetric arm geometry is our default recommendation because it rotates the vehicle back for door clearance, which matters when techs are climbing in and out to inspect quarter panels and doors. The trade-off is that asymmetric requires the operator to position the pads more precisely, and that is where gear-tooth arm restraints prove their worth: they lock position without needing exact hole alignment.

Column-to-column drive-through at ninety-eight to a hundred inches is right for most passenger and light-truck body work. Wider is better for heavy trucks. On a body-shop install we always show the foreman how to check arm-restraint engagement before every lift, how to hear the click, and how to reset if it does not seat. That thirty-second habit is what keeps a lift running safely for twenty years.

Buying new versus buying used — safety edition

We have talked about used-lift economics elsewhere. On the safety front the argument is even simpler. Arm restraints, safety cams, cables, sheaves, and hydraulic seals are the components most likely to be worn on a used car lift, and they are exactly the components you cannot afford to have fail. Even when a used lift looks clean, the wear on these systems is not always visible without disassembly. Rebuilding a used commercial two-post to safe-as-new condition typically costs seven to eleven hundred dollars in parts plus labor.

If a used lift is the only budget path, we can inspect and quote a proper refurb before you buy. What we will not do is sign off a lift we cannot verify. For most body shops the honest recommendation is a new ALI Gold commercial two-post at twelve thousand pounds, installed by a competent crew, with an annual service scheduled from day one. That package runs a real amount of money up front and dramatically less over the twenty-year ownership window than any used-lift alternative we have priced.

Buyer’s checklist and next steps

Before you write a check on any car lift, confirm five items. One: the specific model is on the ALI Gold directory, by model number not just brand name. Two: the arm restraints are gear-tooth mechanical, and the manufacturer publishes replacement parts. Three: safety cams engage audibly on both columns with a positive click at fixed intervals. Four: cable equalization is documented in the spec sheet with recommended annual inspection. Five: the seller can install locally and service the lift for the next twenty years.
