What A Restoration Workflow Really Demands From The Lift
The restoration workflow lives on the lift for weeks at a time, not the forty-five minutes a tire shop needs. That single fact drives every spec decision you will make. A four-post configuration lets you park a car on runways instead of hanging it from clamped pinch welds for a month straight. For sheet metal work, floor pan repair, undercarriage cleanup, and drivetrain work that stretches across a season, that stability matters more than the couple extra inches of side access you would get from a two-post design. Frame-off projects especially benefit from having a locked mechanical platform underneath everything you disassemble.
Restoration cars also spend time in the air empty of fluids, with the body sometimes on stands and the frame going back and forth between welding and paint. A drive-on runway platform holds the entire chassis level while you work under it, and the runways give you a clean surface to bolt down jack stands or a rotisserie carriage. Most of the east-central Iowa restoration shops we equip end up using the platform as a staging surface first and a service lift second. That means the runway length, width, and clearance under the crossmembers matter more than the clean side access a two-post would give you.
Decision Tree Step One: Set The Budget Envelope Honestly
The first branch of the decision tree is money, because it eliminates about a third of the catalog before you even talk about specs. A homeowner-grade four-post starts in the mid-two-thousand-dollar range, a commercial-grade drive on auto lift with rolling jacks and full ALI certification sits in the mid-single-digit thousands, and a heavy-capacity long-runway restoration lift with air-line kits and drip trays can reach into the low five figures once you add options. Installation, freight, and 220-volt electrical are separate line items and often surprise first-time buyers.
We tell restoration shop owners to build their number around the lift plus roughly fifteen hundred dollars for install, four hundred to eight hundred for concrete work if the slab needs attention, and about two hundred for the electrician trip if the outlet is not already near the bay. Once you have that total honest number, we can filter to the two or three real candidate models. Guessing at the lift price alone and forgetting the ancillary costs is the single most common budgeting mistake we see across east-central Iowa, and it usually leads to buying a lift that will not survive the actual work you do.
Decision Tree Step Two: Match Capacity To Your Heaviest Project
Capacity is not the weight of your daily driver. It is the weight of the heaviest, longest project you realistically expect to have on the lift over the ownership life. If you might restore a mid-sixties pickup with a cast-iron big block still installed, a nine or ten thousand pound rating is your floor, not your ceiling. Restoration shops routinely underestimate this because they mentally weigh the car with the drivetrain removed, forgetting that the drivetrain lives on the same lift half the time during reassembly and test fitting.
The other capacity conversation is the roller jack. Roller jacks slide across the runways to lift the axles off the platform for wheels-off work, and their capacity is separate from the lift capacity. A seven thousand pound drive on auto lift with a four thousand pound roller jack will handle almost any passenger restoration, but a shop that wants to work on classic trucks, medium duty, or a Suburban should step up to nine thousand pounds of platform capacity with a six thousand pound roller jack. Buying the roller jack up front is much cheaper than adding it after the fact, and it changes the workflow completely once you have one.
Model And Spec Comparison: The Two Real Restoration Choices
For east-central Iowa restoration shops we consistently narrow the field to two families: the Rotary AR-series and the BendPak HD-series in commercial configuration. Rotary AR runs true nine-thousand-pound-plus capacity, has ALI Gold, and has a parts pipeline we can hit from our Ames warehouse inside twenty-four hours. BendPak HD is a strong platform with a shorter runway option that fits tighter buildings, and it comes standard with slip plates and turn plates cast into the runways for alignment work. Both accept the same third-party roller jacks.
Beyond those two, we sometimes recommend a used commercial drive on auto lift from our reconditioned inventory if the budget is tight and the shop is willing to trade a shorter warranty for a lower price. What we do not recommend for a working restoration shop is the two-thousand-dollar home-storage BendPak or Atlas single-post-stack unit. Those are excellent home garage units and we sell a lot of them, but the runway construction, cable routing, and crossbeam sizing were not engineered for the constant loading and unloading of a restoration schedule. Restoration workflow eats those units in a few years.
Storage-First Configurations We See In East-Central Iowa
Half of our restoration customers are storing cars as much as they are working on them. Winter storage in Iowa is the dominant use case from November through March, and a drive on auto lift lets you double your usable floor square footage by parking a project car underneath and a driver car on top. That works cleanly with a four-post design because the runways bear the load, not the sills. We spec these installs with the lift positioned so you can walk around both cars on all four sides without touching a wall.
For storage-heavy shops we push toward the longer runway options, typically the one hundred seventy-five inch runway rather than the standard one hundred sixty-five, so an extended-cab pickup or a longer classic like an Impala fits without the front bumper hanging out over the front stop. We also spec caster kits on the lift columns whenever the ceiling allows, so the shop can wheel the entire assembly out of a bay for a large frame job or repaint the floor without disassembly. Little decisions like that pay dividends every year the lift is in service.
Runway Length, Approach Ramps, And Roll-Around Jacks
Runway length is the spec restoration shops get wrong most often. A standard passenger runway measures around one hundred sixty-five inches usable, which fits a Camaro, a Mustang, and most Mopar coupes fine. It does not fit a long-wheelbase pickup, a Suburban, or a mid-sixties Cadillac fully. Once your project list crosses into that territory, order the extended runway option or accept that the front stops will get removed for those cars. Removing front stops is fine, but it is a workflow tax you pay every time.
Approach ramps come in fold-up and drive-through configurations. Fold-up ramps let you drive off either end of the lift, which is how most restoration shops want to operate because you can reposition the car quickly without a three-point turn inside the building. Drive-through ramps are lighter and cheaper but lock you into one entry direction. On a drive on auto lift used for restoration, we default to fold-up ramps and add an aluminum threshold ramp option if the shop has a wheeled tool cart that rolls onto the runway during work, because the small ramp saves the caster wheels from constant edge impacts.
What The Install Timeline Looks Like In Central Iowa
From order to running the lift, our typical restoration shop timeline is two to three weeks. Freight from the manufacturer to our Ames warehouse runs about one week for in-stock units, and we can often ship the same week if it is a model we keep on the floor. Install at your shop takes one working day for a standard four-post, sometimes a day and a half if we are also pulling in the electrician for a fresh 220-volt run, which most restoration shops need for the air compressor and welder anyway. We coordinate the electrical if you would rather have a single point of contact.
We do not ask restoration shops to prep the concrete themselves. A four-post drive on auto lift does not require anchoring in the same way a two-post does, but we still verify the slab thickness and level before we install. If your building has an older four-inch slab with no rebar, we can still make the lift work by adjusting the leveling shims, but we will tell you honestly what we see.
