A drive on auto lift comes up in almost every conversation we have with EV specialty shops preparing to add annual state inspections to their service menu, and the conversation usually starts with a myth we need to correct. Auto Lift Services covers all of Iowa from our Ames base, and we have installed and serviced lifts for EV-focused shops in the Cedar Rapids and Dubuque corridor for several years now. The myths around EV lifting are worth addressing in one place because they cost shops real money when they end up with the wrong equipment. Here is a myth-busting piece written for the Dubuque EV shop owner considering a state-inspection bay.

Myth Number One: EV Weight Requires An Exotic Lift

The most common myth is that electric vehicles are so much heavier than internal-combustion vehicles that they require some kind of specialty lift. That is not true for the vast majority of EVs on the road. A Tesla Model 3 curb weight is around thirty-eight hundred pounds. A Chevrolet Bolt is around thirty-six hundred. A Ford Mustang Mach-E is around forty-five hundred, and a Ford F-150 Lightning is around sixty-five hundred pounds. All of those numbers fit inside a standard nine-thousand-pound commercial drive on auto lift with plenty of capacity headroom.

The only EVs that genuinely push into needing higher capacity are the heavy pickup and SUV segments like the Hummer EV at around nine thousand pounds, and the Rivian RIST platform depending on configuration. For a Dubuque EV specialty shop that expects to see mostly passenger EVs plus a handful of Lightning-class pickups, a nine-thousand-pound four-post is fine. If you expect Hummer EV volume, step up to twelve thousand pounds. But the general myth that EVs require unique equipment is exactly that: a myth, and it leads shops to spend money they did not need to spend on the initial lift purchase.

Myth Number Two: Battery Packs Cannot Be Lifted On A Runway

The second myth is that a drive-on runway configuration cannot support EV battery pack service because the battery hangs low and the runway blocks access. This one is half-true and worth understanding carefully. On most EVs, the battery pack is bolted to the underside of the chassis between the axles and is removed downward when it needs service. On a two-post lift you can lower the pack straight down to the floor. On a four-post drive on auto lift, the runways sit directly below where the pack would come out, so you cannot drop the pack straight down without moving the vehicle off the lift first.

The workaround is a battery table on wheels that fits between the runways. For infrequent pack service, this works fine and it is what most independent EV shops use rather than buying a dedicated pack lift. For high-volume pack service, a scissor lift with a battery table is the specialized configuration you would want, and we install those too. For the Dubuque shop scenario of adding state inspections rather than doing dealer-level pack replacements, the four-post handles the daily work well and the occasional pack service can be handled by rolling the vehicle over to a scissor lift when needed.

Myth Number Three: You Need An All-New Facility For EV Work

The third myth is that EV service requires an all-new facility with special ventilation, isolated bays, and dedicated safety infrastructure. In reality, adding state inspections and light EV service to an existing shop just requires a drive on auto lift, insulated tools rated to one thousand volts, a small handful of pack-safe blankets and cones for the working area, and the same fire suppression you already have. The state inspection process itself does not require anything different from a standard vehicle inspection except the specific checkpoints on the inspection sheet.

Where the facility conversation does become real is if you decide to add pack replacement or high-voltage repair to your services later. At that point you need a dedicated bay, an EV-trained tech, and specific insurance riders. But you do not need any of that to run state inspections on EVs. A Dubuque shop that starts with inspections and gradually adds services will find that the initial lift purchase covers the base need for years, and the specialty investments come later as you understand the customer demand. Do not front-load capital for services you have not yet sold.

Myth Number Four: Rotary Does Not Make EV-Rated Equipment

The fourth myth is a brand-history myth about who makes lifts suitable for EV service. Rotary Lift, one of the two dominant American commercial lift brands and one we install more than any other, has been building lifts since 1925 and has updated their platform capacities across their whole lineup to accommodate current EV weights. Any current-production Rotary four-post drive on auto lift is fine for EV work up to its rated capacity. This applies to Challenger as well, which shares parent-company engineering with Rotary in some product lines. The idea that only European brands or specialty manufacturers can handle EVs is a marketing story, not a technical reality.

Brand history matters more for parts pipeline than for lifting capacity. Rotary has the deepest parts network in North America because they have been shipping lifts for a hundred years and every commercial lift dealer stocks their common wear parts. We have a full Rotary parts pipeline running through our Ames warehouse and can hit any Dubuque address within twenty-four hours for cables, hoses, or replacement lock hardware. For an EV shop that cannot afford downtime because inspection appointments are booked out weeks, that parts pipeline matters more than the badge on the column.

What A Dubuque EV Inspection Bay Actually Needs

For a Dubuque EV shop adding state inspections, the actual equipment list is straightforward. A nine-thousand-pound commercial drive on auto lift with extended runways covers every passenger EV including Lightning-class pickups. Add a four-thousand-pound air-hydraulic roller jack for tire and brake inspection work as part of the state check. Add a set of insulated hand tools rated to one thousand volts for any hands-on high-voltage adjacent work. Add a small fire blanket and Class D fire extinguisher rated for lithium battery events, per current NFPA guidance.

What you do not need at this stage: a scissor lift, a battery table, an isolated bay, a dedicated ventilation system, or any special foundation work beyond what a normal commercial lift install requires. All of those are fine investments if you scale into deeper EV service later, but they are not required for the state inspection scope. Keep the initial equipment purchase honest to the actual service you plan to sell, and add specialty gear as the volume justifies it. This is where the most first-time EV shop owners over-invest, and we would rather help you avoid that than sell you extra equipment you will not use for two years.

Parts Pipeline Is The Real Differentiator

Here is what actually differentiates a good lift purchase from a bad one for an EV inspection bay: the parts pipeline behind the equipment. A cable set failure on a drive on auto lift is a two-hour repair if the cables are on your local vendor’s shelf, and a two-week repair if the cables have to ship from an overseas warehouse. Two weeks of downtime for a Dubuque inspection bay booked three weeks out means every one of those customers reschedules to a competitor. That is a much bigger business cost than the initial lift price differential.

Long-Term View Of An EV Inspection Bay

The state inspection market for EVs will grow steadily over the next decade as the EV vehicle population in eastern Iowa continues to increase. A well-installed drive on auto lift in a Dubuque shop today will still be running annual inspections in 2036, provided it gets the standard preventive maintenance schedule of annual ALI inspection, hydraulic fluid replacement every five years, and cable replacement at the seven-to-ten-year mark. None of that is unusual for a commercial lift, and the total maintenance cost across ten years is a small fraction of the initial equipment cost.

What might change over that decade is the specific vehicle mix you inspect. Today the EV inspection queue is heavily Tesla and Bolt with some Mach-E and Lightning coming in. Ten years from now the mix will include vehicles that have not launched yet, from manufacturers who are not yet strong in the Iowa market. Your lift needs to handle whatever mix arrives, which is another reason to buy commercial-grade capacity now rather than home-storage-grade equipment. Buy for the vehicles you will see in year eight, not just the ones parked in your lot this month, and you will get twenty years out of a lift purchase you make in 2026.
