If you are a weekend mechanic in the Quad Cities shopping a home car lift for garage use, the biggest cause of buyer regret we see is skipping the measurements. People fall in love with a photo of a lifted Camaro, click buy, and then find out the garage door will not close over the lift arms or the ceiling is four inches short. We wrote this pre-purchase checklist for daily-maintenance buyers — oil changes, brake jobs, suspension work — who want a home car lift for garage installation that actually fits and actually gets used. Run through every item before you send us a deposit. If any check fails, we would rather redirect you than sell you the wrong lift.

Check One: Ceiling Height at the Highest Point of the Vehicle
Ceiling is the first measurement to take, and the mistake most buyers make is measuring the ceiling but not the vehicle. What matters is the distance from the top of the highest car you plan to lift to the joist or drywall above. A two-post home car lift for garage service typically needs eleven feet minimum for a passenger car and twelve for a full-size pickup or SUV at full extension. A four-post can go into lower ceilings because you rarely raise it all the way for storage or maintenance work.
Measure with a tape at the actual mounting spot, not the middle of the garage. Joists sag, garage doors track differently near the walls, and light fixtures eat headroom in the corners. Write the number down. If you have 10 feet 8 inches under the joists, tell us that specifically. We can spec a shorter-column two-post, a mid-rise scissor, or a low-ceiling four-post depending on what you plan to work on. What we will not do is quote you a standard-column two-post that we know will hit your garage door opener the first time you raise it. Ceiling is a hard constraint and there is no fix on install day other than raising the roof.
Check Two: Overhead Door Swing and Track Clearance
The Quad Cities buyer we talked to last month had a garage door track that dropped down two feet into the ceiling space when the door was open. He did not measure that. His door would have caught the top of the lift on the way up. This check is the one nobody thinks about. Open your garage door fully and measure from the concrete to the lowest point of the door in the raised position. Then compare that number to the collapsed height of the lift you are considering.
Every home car lift for garage installation we quote gets a two-number check: raised height with a vehicle on it, and clearance with the door open. Both have to work simultaneously if you plan to leave the vehicle in the air overnight or open the door while the lift is up. If your door blocks the columns at full raise, options are a high-lift door conversion (a different door track that lifts the panels vertically), a shorter lift, or committing to only using the lift with the door closed. We have quoted all three. Measure before you buy, not after the pallet arrives on your driveway.
Check Three: Concrete Slab Thickness and Reinforcement
Home garages usually have four-inch slab. Pole buildings sometimes have less. The eight-thousand-pound two-post we quote most often for a home car lift for garage bay needs a minimum of four inches at 3,000 psi with reinforcement. Nine and ten thousand pound units want thicker slab and higher psi. Four-post lifts are lighter on the concrete because they distribute load through four points instead of two, so they are the fallback for buyers with thin slab.
If you do not know your slab spec, three ways to find out. One, look at the original building permit or drawings — the pour spec is usually there. Two, drill a small hole in an inconspicuous corner and measure. Three, tell us and we will bring a core-sample kit when we scout the install. Do not guess. We had a buyer near Bettendorf who assumed four inches and turned out to have three-and-a-half over sand fill. He needed a two-inch overpour before we could safely bolt the columns. Check Four: Electrical Circuit and Panel Capacity
Most single-phase two-post and four-post lifts run on 220V single-phase with a 30-amp dedicated circuit. Some smaller mid-rise scissors run on 110V. Look at your panel. If you have room for a dedicated 220V breaker and the panel is within a reasonable conduit run of the install location, you are fine. If your panel is 100-amp service and already loaded with a welder, a compressor, and a heater, you may need a subpanel or a service upgrade before the lift can run.
The other electrical check is phase. Almost every residential shop is single-phase. Almost every commercial lift over 12,000 pounds is three-phase. If you are shopping the used market and see a great deal on a 15,000 lb three-phase two-post, know that you cannot run it from your home panel without a rotary or static phase converter, and even then you lose efficiency. We steer home buyers away from three-phase equipment unless they already have three-phase service, which is rare on residential meters. Single-phase 220V is the correct spec for almost every home car lift for garage installation we deliver.
Check Five: Bay Width and Column Spread
Two-post lifts have a fixed drive-through width between the columns. Standard is around 105 inches, wide-drive-through is 130 inches or so. Measure your bay width including obstructions — wall studs, tool boxes, cabinets, water heaters that stick out. You need six inches of clearance on each side of the columns for the arms to swing. If your bay is a nominal ten feet wide but your workbench eats eighteen inches on one wall, your effective width is 8’6″ and you may not fit a standard-drive-through two-post.
Four-post lifts measure differently. What matters there is the outside runway width and the overall footprint. A four-post is more forgiving on bay width because there is no swinging arm to clear. It is less forgiving on bay length, because you have to drive on and off from one end. A home car lift for garage used mainly for storage often ends up as a four-post for exactly this reason: the buyer has a deep garage but narrower bays. Tell us the interior dimensions and any obstructions. We will spec accordingly.
Check Six: Workflow — What Are You Actually Doing?
Daily maintenance is a fuzzy phrase. Break it down. Oil changes want a two-post so you can access the drain plug from underneath standing up. Brake jobs and suspension work want a two-post so the wheels hang free. Alignment work wants a scissor or an alignment-rated four-post with slip plates. Storage wants a four-post. Restoration wants a two-post with a big lift capacity and full ceiling. If you are doing more than one of those categories, decide which is the most frequent and quote for that.
We had a buyer in Davenport who told us daily maintenance and we quoted a two-post. Six months later he called saying he wanted to store his summer car overhead too. We had to add a second lift because a two-post cannot store safely long-term. If he had told us both use cases up front, we would have quoted a four-post with a rolling jack and saved him a second install. Be honest about what a home car lift for garage will actually do for you. There is no wrong answer, but there is a wrong quote if the answer is not on the table.
Check Seven: Delivery Access and Install Logistics
A boxed two-post lift weighs around 1,800 pounds and arrives on two pallets. A four-post is heavier. Our delivery truck is 26 feet long and needs to get within about a hundred feet of the install door with either a lift gate or a forklift ride to the concrete. If your driveway is steep, gravel, gated, or too narrow for the truck, tell us. We adjust. If your driveway is short and you park two cars in it, tell us that too. The wrong day to figure out delivery access is the day the pallet is on the shoulder of the road and the driver is texting for directions.
Also plan your install window. From delivery to first live lift is roughly one full day for a two-post, half again as long for a four-post. If you are installing yourself, budget a weekend and a helper. If we install, budget one appointment and one follow-up for the initial ALI-style safety walk.
