A European-marque specialty shop close to the Iowa-Missouri border called us this year to add a home car lift for garage to the shop owner’s personal building. He was a Porsche and BMW brake specialist by day and wanted a serious lift at home for the family cars and the occasional customer overflow. He came in loaded with myths he had picked up from forums and salespeople, and by the end of the call we had walked through the three biggest ones. Below is the myth-busting piece we now hand to every European-marque shop or serious hobbyist shopping a home car lift for garage, plus the install prep and site survey checklist we run on every job.

Myth 1: a home car lift for garage is not real enough for pro work
The most common myth we hear is that a home car lift for garage is a hobbyist toy and cannot handle real professional work. The pro-versus-home line is not about the lift, it is about the lift specification and the ALI certification. There are home-tier lifts on the market with cheap components that would not survive a busy shop, and there are commercial-grade 2-posts we install in customer garages that come off the same assembly line as the ones we install in body shops.
A Rotary SPOA10 or a Challenger E10 lifted in a home garage is the exact same lift you would find in a mid-size shop bay. The difference is not the lift, it is what surrounds it. A shop has multiple lifts, service techs on a schedule, and a compliance program. A home has one lift, one operator, and no compliance program. On the lift itself, a serious home car lift for garage running commercial-grade hardware is every bit as capable as the pro lift, and for a European specialty guy doing brake work on his own bench between paying customers, it will outlast most of his other shop equipment.
Myth 2: any 4-inch slab will do
The second myth is that any four-inch concrete slab is enough for a 2-post lift. The lift manuals do require a minimum of four inches, but there is a lot of nuance underneath that number. Four inches of properly cured concrete at 3,000 PSI with proper anchor spacing is enough. Four inches of old cracked slab with unknown rebar over compressible fill is not enough. On his site the shop-owner’s home building was a 20-year-old three-car detached garage with unknown slab thickness.
Our site survey confirmed the slab was four and a half inches with light wire mesh, which was on the low end of acceptable for a 10,000-pound-capacity lift. We recommended core-drilling one test hole to confirm rebar depth before we anchored. Turned out the mesh was buried at the bottom of the pour, which meant the top three inches were unreinforced. He ended up saw-cutting a four-foot-by-eight-foot section, pouring a new 6-inch pad with rebar, and installing the lift on the new section. On any home car lift for garage install, the slab matters and it is worth the extra day to get it right.
Myth 3: you don’t need a site survey
The third myth is that a site survey is a formality. Most online lift sellers ship a lift on a pallet and consider their work done. We do not. On the European-marque customer, the site survey caught the slab issue, caught a low header on the garage roll-up door that would have interfered with the columns at full rise, and caught an unrated 100-amp panel that could not carry the lift plus the compressor plus the plasma cutter he wanted to add later. All three of those would have been show-stoppers on install day, and all three cost him time and money to fix before the lift shipped.
A site survey is not a marketing gimmick. On every home car lift for garage we sell with install, we do the survey either in person if you are within our Iowa or neighboring-state driving range, or on video call with a tape measure and a laser level. It runs about 45 minutes to an hour, and it turns install day from a chess match into a straightforward job. If a lift seller is not willing to do a survey with you before they take your money, that tells you something about how they will treat you after your money is theirs. Ask for the survey and expect one.
What our actual site survey covers
Our site survey has a fixed checklist we run through no matter what lift you are buying. Ceiling clearance at the lift centerline and at the corners, checked with a laser and a tape. Slab thickness, either from documentation or from a small core hole. Electrical panel amperage, breaker slots available, wire run distance to the lift bay. Overhead obstacles, roll-up door headers, exposed conduits, HVAC ducts. Door and approach measurements, so we know the lift can be walked in through the roll-up.
We also walk through the vehicles you plan to lift, because a Porsche 911 with a low front lip has different approach clearance than a Silverado. On his shop, the 911 had four inches of clearance to the runway ramp on a low-rise scissor, which would not have fit. We steered him to a 2-post with drive-in approach so the lip cleared. On every home car lift for garage, the vehicle-plus-lift geometry is part of the survey, not an afterthought. That combined checklist takes about an hour and it is the single most valuable hour in the entire buying process.
Brake service on a Porsche 911: clearance math
His primary use case was brake service and rotor swaps on his own family Porsches. The 911 has four listed lift points, two per side, and the manufacturer clearance to the underbody is tight. A generic set of arm pads will touch the panel behind the pinch weld and dent aluminum. On his install we spec-ed the Rotary flip-up adapters with tall Porsche-specific pucks, which lift on the reinforced pinch weld and clear the aluminum panel behind by about a quarter inch.
Rotor and caliper work on a 911 also needs the wheels hanging free with the arms not blocking the caliper carrier bracket. On the asymmetric 2-post we spec-ed, the arm sweep landed the pad two inches inboard of the caliper carrier, which gave him free swing on the caliper and free access to the rotor hats. This is the kind of detail a home car lift for garage salesperson at a big-box retailer will never walk you through because they do not know your car. The Rotary and Challenger asymmetric 2-post platforms both handle European cars well, and we spec them differently for a Porsche shop than we would for a Silverado owner.
The prep list we send before install
Two weeks before install day we email a prep list that every home car lift for garage customer gets. Clear the bay footprint plus a two-foot buffer on all sides. Sweep and blow out the slab. Confirm the electrical drop is in place and terminated on the wall near the lift centerline. Confirm the door clearance path from the roll-up to the install location. Have someone available to sign a permit if the local building department requires one.
On his install we also asked him to have the Porsche moved to a different bay so we could actually work, which sounds obvious but has burned us twice on other jobs. Prep-day-of we run through the checklist with him one more time, confirm the anchor pattern on the slab, and set the columns dry-fit before we drill a single hole. He texted me three weeks later after his first full brake job on the 911 to tell me the lift felt like the ones at his day job, which was the highest compliment a European specialty guy could give.
