A farm shop east of Waterloo called us last month wanting a home car lift for garage duty in a 40×60 pole barn: pickups, farm sedans, and the occasional grain-cart tractor tire flip. The owner had already downloaded three brochures and knew he was confused. We built him a comparison spreadsheet with actual model numbers and specs, then a one-page pre-purchase checklist to run before he signed anything. This article is that spreadsheet and that checklist. The Farm Shop Version of a Home Car Lift for Garage
A home car lift for garage duty in a farm shop is not the same conversation as a suburban garage. Pole barns run 12 to 16 feet at the eave with purlins that hang 6 to 12 inches below the ceiling deck. Concrete in a farm shop is usually 4 to 6 inches thick at 3,000 to 4,000 psi if it was poured to code, but the older 1980s slabs we see occasionally were 3 inches thick with no rebar. That has to be checked before spec. Farm shop vehicles include a full-size crew-cab pickup, sometimes with a bed camper adding 800 pounds, and that pushes lift capacity requirements higher than a typical suburban garage.
We usually spec farm shops in the 10,000-pound class for that reason, not the 9,000-pound class most home garages get. The extra 1,000 pounds costs a couple hundred dollars more up front and keeps the lift inside spec when a loaded 3/4-ton pickup comes in for an oil change. Farm shops also value four-post over two-post more often than suburban garages do, because parking a pickup on the lift overnight to work on it the next morning is common. A four-post storage-style lift handles that use case cleanly and skips the anchor-drilling step in the slab. That matters if the pole-barn slab is old.
Model Numbers We Actually Compare in Waterloo
For a farm shop looking at a home car lift for garage class oil-change use, we usually put four models on the comparison sheet. Two-post options: Rotary SPOA10 and Challenger 10K. Both are 10,000-pound asymmetric two-posts, both are ALI Gold, and both fit a pole-barn ceiling of 12 feet with the standard crossbar. Rotary’s overall column height is around 137 inches; Challenger’s is around 141 inches. Both take about 6 hours to install for two techs on prepped concrete. Rotary’s parts pipeline is slightly deeper through the VSG distribution network, which matters in year three.

Pre-Purchase Checklist Item 1: Measure the Purlins
Purlins are the horizontal beams that run between rafters in a pole barn. They usually stick down 4 to 8 inches below the ceiling deck. For a home car lift for garage install in a pole barn, the purlin dimension is the number that limits your lift height, not the ceiling itself. Get a laser measure or a tape and record: distance from finished floor to the bottom of the lowest purlin over your planned lift footprint, and distance from finished floor to the ceiling deck immediately adjacent. The difference is the purlin depth, and the lower number is your working ceiling.
Also measure any electrical, gas, or plumbing lines that run across the ceiling. Farm shops often have a gas heater with a horizontal exhaust flue that dips down a foot from the ceiling. The flue is not a purlin, but it kills your lift height just the same. Radiant tube heaters are even worse because they run continuously along the ceiling and often sit 18 to 24 inches below the deck. If your heater is running below 10 feet, a two-post lift with the standard crossbar is off the table and you are looking at either a low-ceiling crossbar variant or a four-post. Measure before you shop, not after you order.
Checklist Item 2: Verify the Slab
Concrete verification for a farm shop is more involved than for a suburban garage because the slab age spread is wider. A home car lift for garage install in a barn poured last year on 5 inches at 4,000 psi with 2-foot grid rebar can carry anything you throw at it. A 1975 slab poured 3 inches at 2,000 psi with no rebar cannot carry a two-post anchor and will crack under a four-post’s concentrated column load. The way to check: drill a 1/8-inch test hole with a hammer drill and measure penetration until you hit dirt. That tells you thickness. Age comes from the barn’s tax records or the original owner’s memory.
Rebar you can check with a rebar detector for a couple hundred dollars, or you can send us a rebound-hammer photo and we will estimate. PSI is a harder guess without a coring; we assume the low end when we cannot verify. If your slab is under 4 inches at any point in the anchor field, we recommend a four-post storage lift that does not need anchoring, or a core-and-pour of anchor pads. Our concrete guide covers the anchor math. Do not skip this step. A crumbling anchor under load is the most dangerous failure mode a lift can have, and it is entirely preventable at spec time.
Checklist Item 3: Electrical Panel and Feed Distance
Farm shops usually have a 200-amp panel and plenty of open breaker slots. That is a good starting point. What we need to know: is there a 220V single-phase 20-amp breaker available, and how far from the panel to the lift install location? A home car lift for garage two-post needs the power unit on the driver-side column. If the panel is 30 feet from that column, you need 30 feet of 10-gauge romex or conduit run, which adds a few hundred dollars in materials plus a couple hours of electrician time.
Some farm shops run 240V three-phase from a rural cooperative. Rotary and Challenger both make three-phase power units that can be swapped in at the factory, and that is a slightly cheaper power unit and slightly faster lift cycle. Confirm phase before you order. Swapping a single-phase power unit for a three-phase unit after delivery is doable but takes a service call. If your barn only has 110V because the panel is undersized, we can spec a four-post storage lift on 110V and skip the panel upgrade entirely. That is often the right call for a farm shop that mostly stores vehicles and only occasionally lifts one for oil-change service.
Checklist Item 4: Access, Delivery, and Install Day
Getting a lift into a farm shop 20 miles east of Waterloo is usually easier than getting one into a suburban garage. Farm driveways handle a semi with a lift gate, and pole-barn overhead doors are usually 12 to 16 feet wide, which fits our forklift with a lift crate in the tines. Confirm: overhead door width in inches, driveway grade if it climbs at all, and any low tree branches on the approach. Our truck plus trailer is 13 feet 6 inches tall and a low branch can force us to reposition.
Install day for a two-post is one full day for two techs, arriving around 8 AM and finishing before dark. For a four-post storage lift, expect a half day. We ask that the install spot be cleared of everything within 15 feet of where the lift will sit. Farm shops usually have a lot of stuff parked around the eventual lift spot; moving it the night before saves us an hour of setup. If you want to be present during install, that is fine and we encourage it because we walk through the safety-check procedure and the first oil change with you. If you cannot be there, we call before leaving to confirm the lift raises, lowers, and locks properly under load. That call closes out the install.
Checklist Item 5: Warranty, Parts, and What Wears First
A home car lift for garage duty in a farm shop lasts 20-plus years if it is maintained. What wears first: hydraulic hose from the power unit to the slave cylinder, and the swing arm restrictor gears on a two-post. Neither is expensive to replace, but both are the point where a not-maintained lift starts leaking or refusing to lock properly. Rotary and Challenger both keep these parts in dealer inventory. Warranty on Rotary, Challenger, and BendPak pro-grade lifts is 5 years structural and 1 year parts, which is standard. Atlas warranty terms vary by model. Buy through a dealer who handles warranty claims for you (we do); do not buy direct and try to handle a warranty claim yourself with the manufacturer overseas customer service line. That is the single biggest mistake we see farm-shop buyers make: they save a few hundred dollars up front, then discover in year two that the warranty process eats a week.
