In practice the overhead door track stole about four inches and a couple of ceiling fans stole another six.
We laid painter’s tape on the floor to show the exact footprint of a residential 4-post. Once we confirmed the layout we handled install prep. Slab was fine at four inches with a decent broom finish. We identified where the anchors would land and confirmed there were no control joints running through the pattern. Power was a bigger question. The building had a subpanel on 100 amp service, plenty for a residential 4-post plus lights and outlets, but the run to the lift location needed a new dedicated 220 volt circuit. The buyer had an electrician run the wire before the freight showed up.
Freight path in a pole building is usually simple because the overhead door is wide, but this building had a step-up sill that would have caught a pallet jack. We flagged it and told him to have his neighbor bring a small forklift over on delivery day. That neighbor showed up with a Bobcat and lifted the pallet off the freight trailer in under ten minutes. Delivery Day and Assembly

Assembly took us the better part of a day. Columns went up first, then the runways, then cable routing through the sheaves, and finally the power unit and hydraulic connection. Anchoring came before final cable tension because the columns need to be plumb and locked to the slab before cables load. By late afternoon we had the lift cycled through every lock position empty, then loaded with the collector’s daily-driver pickup for a real test. The lift held level through the full range and settled onto the mechanical safeties without drama.
The First Storage Rotation
Within the first month the collector had already rotated three vehicles through the lift. Top position stored a summer sports car through the fall. The daily driver lived underneath. In practice it became the primary staging spot for anything he touched — oil changes, brake pad checks, an alternator swap on the daily driver, plus the transmission service.
