Storage-first use cases weight the answer heavily toward 4-post, but the wrong 4-post is worse than a right 2-post. The Storage-First vs Service-First Decision

Every home car lift for garage decision starts with a ratio: how many hours of storage per hour of service. If you’re using the lift 90% for storage and 10% for occasional service, you want 4-post. If it’s 50/50, you probably still want 4-post but with sliding jack trays. If it’s 20/80 storage-to-service or heavier on service, you want 2-post and you park the winter car somewhere else. Fleets that rotate vehicles seasonally almost always land on the 4-post side of that line because the whole point is stacking vehicles vertically to buy floor space back.

The mistake we see most often is a fleet operator buying a 2-post because it’s cheaper and then discovering they can’t safely leave a vehicle parked on it for months at a stretch. A 2-post loaded continuously stresses the cables and cylinders in a way they weren’t designed for. Manufacturers recommend against multi-month vehicle storage on 2-posts. A 4-post is engineered for exactly that use — vehicle on the runways, load spread across four columns, lock ladders holding position. That’s the storage tool.

4-Post Storage Lifts — The Models We Install

For a home car lift for garage seasonal storage duty, our three-model shortlist is Rotary SM14 (14K commercial-storage), BendPak HD-9 (9K home-storage), and Atlas Apex 9K (entry-level home-storage). The Rotary SM14 is the commercial pick — heavier steel, longer service life, deeper parts pipeline. The BendPak HD-9 is the most-installed home-storage 4-post in America and hits the sweet spot for a small fleet. The Atlas Apex is the entry-level pick for a hobbyist rotating one or two cars a season.

For a fleet operator storing multiple spare vehicles, we typically recommend two BendPak HD-9s side by side over one Rotary SM14, because you get twice the storage bays for similar money and you can move each independently on caster kits. If the fleet includes anything over 8,000 lb curb weight, we bump one bay to a 12K or 14K lift. If the vehicles are smaller — sedans, compact SUVs, light pickups — the HD-9 handles them comfortably. Ceiling height needs to be roughly 12 feet for comfortable two-car stacking, and 10 feet works for single-car storage-and-service.

2-Post Service Lifts — When You Add One Alongside Storage

A common fleet build-out is a 4-post for storage plus a 2-post for service. If you have the bay width for both, this is our favorite configuration for a working small fleet — the 4-post handles the winter cars and the seasonal rotation, and the 2-post handles the actual service work: oil changes, brake jobs, exhaust and driveline access. The 2-post we spec for this alongside a 4-post is usually an asymmetric 10K from Rotary, Challenger, or BendPak.

The build-out sequence matters. If you can only install one lift right now, put in the 4-post first — it solves the acute storage pain and it can do occasional service work with sliding jack trays. Add the 2-post later when the shop grows. If you can install both now, install the 4-post at the deeper end of the bay (where you back cars in for storage) and the 2-post at the driveway-side end (where you pull cars in for service). This layout minimizes vehicle shuffling and it’s what our northern Missouri fleet customers have converged on.

Ceiling, Slab, and Bay Width for Fleet Buildouts

A home car lift for garage seasonal storage buildout has three physical requirements you must meet. Ceiling: 12 feet clear for two-car stacking on a 4-post, 11’6″ for a 2-post with overhead beam, 10 feet for a single-car 4-post or a floorplate 2-post. Slab: 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum across the whole anchor footprint, 5 inches preferred for commercial-grade lifts. Bay width: 12 feet clear for either lift type; if you’re installing two lifts side by side, plan on 24 feet of bay width minimum.

Northern Missouri fleet garages we’ve spec’d tend to be either pole-barn or metal-building construction with tall ceilings and marginal slab. If the slab was designed for stationary equipment and not concentrated wheel loads, we do a slab check before install. If the pour is thinner than 4″, we saw-cut and re-pour anchor pads for each column. Adding this to the buildout is annoying but non-negotiable. We tell every fleet customer up front so nobody is surprised on install day.

Side-by-Side Comparison — 2-Post vs 4-Post for Storage-Heavy Use

2-post advantages: cheaper installed, better under-car access for service, smaller footprint, quicker install day. 2-post disadvantages: not designed for continuous long-term storage, harder to move once installed, doesn’t stack a second vehicle underneath. 4-post advantages: engineered for storage, stacks a second vehicle underneath, easier to move with caster kit, safer for extended parked-position use. 4-post disadvantages: costs more installed, tires block partial under-car access, needs sliding jack trays for wheel-off work.

For a home car lift for garage seasonal storage use, the 4-post wins on the criteria that matter for storage. For a service-heavy home shop, the 2-post wins on the criteria that matter for service. For a fleet operator who wants both, install a 4-post now and add a 2-post next year, or install both simultaneously if the bay allows. Build-Out Sequencing for a Small Fleet Garage

Here’s the sequence we recommend for a small-fleet buildout in northern Missouri. Phase one: verify slab thickness and ceiling height across the intended install area. Phase two: if slab needs strengthening, do the saw-cut and re-pour before ordering the lift. Phase three: order the 4-post storage lift and schedule install for after the concrete cure period. Phase four: install and load-test the lift. Phase five: use the lift for a season and confirm your storage rotation actually works the way you expect.

Phase six, typically the following year: if service demand justifies it, order and install the 2-post alongside the 4-post. Phase seven: annual cable and cylinder inspection on both lifts, tightening anchors as needed. This staged approach lets you spread the cost, learn the buildout in real use, and add the second lift only when the workload proves it needs to be there. It’s how our best fleet customers have gotten to a two-lift garage without over-buying up front.

Sequencing the Rest — Compressor, Electrical, Ventilation

Once the lifts are chosen, sequence the rest of the buildout. Electrical: most 2-post and 4-post home lifts run on 220V single-phase and pull 25 to 30 amps. Plan on a dedicated circuit per lift, run from the panel to a location within reach of the power unit. Air: if you’re doing brake or exhaust work, a decent shop compressor makes life easier, and both 2-post and 4-post arms can have air-return kits added. Ventilation: exhaust and welding work needs an extraction fan or open-door circulation; plan the layout accordingly.

Lighting matters more than most fleet buyers expect. Under a raised vehicle, LED bay lights make the difference between a comfortable service session and a frustrating one.
