The first configuration we laid out is a 10,000 pound symmetric 2-post. This lift lives in a defined bay footprint of about 12 feet wide by 14 feet deep including working walk-around. It gives you clean underside access for exhaust work, full swing room around the driveshaft for U-joint replacement, and enough height at chest-lock to work standing without stooping. Arms hit standard passenger and light-truck lift points cleanly.

For exhaust and driveline work specifically, the 2-post is the tool. You can drop an exhaust hanger without fighting a runway. You can pull a driveshaft, spin it under the vehicle to align the yoke, and reinstall without cursing at runway clearance. If a home car lift for garage is going to see driveline work more than a couple times a year, the 2-post is the honest choice. That is the case we made to the northeast Iowa operator on the first call.

Configuration B: Four-Post 9,000 Pound With Sliding Jack

The second configuration is a residential 4-post storage lift at 9,000 pounds with an added sliding hydraulic jack. This lift takes more floor real estate — roughly 12 feet wide by 20 feet long — but adds storage capability underneath. Drive on, park, park a personal vehicle underneath. The sliding jack lets you lift the wheels off the runways for brake and wheel-service work.

Exhaust access on a 4-post is workable but less pleasant. The runways sit under the vehicle centerline and eat some of your work room around the exhaust path. Driveline access is a similar story — you have to reach around the runway supports. For occasional exhaust work the 4-post can do the job. For frequent exhaust and driveline work the 2-post is meaningfully better. Any home car lift for garage buyer with heavy exhaust plans should weigh this carefully.

Home Car Lift for Garage Cable Systems Compared

Both 4-post and scissor lifts use steel cables to raise and lower runways or platforms. 2-post lifts typically use equalizer cables to keep the two columns in sync. Cables are a wear item on any lift, and cable condition should be inspected on a schedule. On a residential home car lift for garage, cables see far fewer cycles than a commercial lift, but they still deserve real inspection at defined intervals.

Our recommendation for residential lifts is a visual cable inspection every six months of active use, or more often if the lift is cycled daily. Look for kinks, broken strands at the sheave contact point, and any visible corrosion. A frayed cable is a replacement item, not a repair item. Do not try to splice a lift cable — replace the whole run and re-tension the system.

On a 4-post used two or three times a month for storage rotation, cables can go a decade or more without replacement if the sheaves are lubed and the runways stay level. On a 2-post equalizer used for regular service work, the cables see more cycles but they run in less demanding paths and can also go many years.

What kills cables early is neglect. Dry sheaves grind the cable and chew strands. Corrosion from a wet basement or a poorly ventilated pole building attacks the cable core. Slab, Ceiling, and Building Realities

The northeast Iowa operator has a 32 by 40 pole building with a fresh five-inch slab and 13 foot side walls. That is plenty of everything for either configuration. Any home car lift for garage build in a similar building has a full menu of options. If your building is smaller, has thinner concrete, or lower ceilings, the menu narrows.

We ask every buyer to measure clear ceiling height accounting for overhead door tracks, lights, and any structural members before we quote. Nominal ceiling minus door track minus lights can easily be 12 inches less than the framer’s stated height. That 12 inches can mean the difference between full-rise storage and a lift that only rises to knee height. Measure twice, order once.

Which One We Recommended

For the small-fleet operator in northeast Iowa we recommended Configuration A — the 10,000 pound symmetric 2-post. His work skewed toward driveline, exhaust, and brake service. He had a separate storage building for personal vehicles so the storage bonus of the 4-post did not add real value. His 13 foot ceiling and five-inch slab were plenty for the 2-post.
