Ordering a home car lift for garage use is not the kind of purchase you want to figure out mid-delivery. Half of those calls end with us catching a problem before the truck rolls, whether it is a slab that is too thin, a garage door header that clips the arms, or an approach angle a forklift cannot make. Measuring the Slab Before You Order
The concrete slab is the first thing we ask about because it is the one thing you cannot fix easily after the fact. For a 4-post storage lift rated 8,000 to 9,000 lb, we want a minimum of 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete on compacted base. For a 2-post rated at 10,000 lb, that number climbs to 4.75 inches minimum with the same PSI. If you know rebar was laid on grid, even better. A pole-building floor poured for storage often runs 4 inches flat, which is right on the line and usually workable, but only after we look at expansion joints and where the columns will actually sit.
We had a customer on the Iowa side of the border last spring who thought his shop floor was 5 inches. We chipped a test hole and found 3.5. That is a no-go for a 2-post. We steered him to a 4-post storage lift instead, which spreads load across four base plates and does not need the same slab spec. Before you finalize any home car lift for garage purchase, get us the pour date, thickness, and PSI. If you do not know, we can drill a small test core and settle it in ten minutes.
Ceiling Height, Bay Width, and Real-World Clearance
Ceiling height gets measured wrong more often than anything else on a site survey. Folks tell us they have 12 feet, but that is the peak of a truss ceiling and the flat drywall soffit at the garage door is really 10 foot 2. A commercial-height 2-post needs about 11 foot 6 to run the arms up to full working height on a mid-size sedan. A 4-post storage lift maxes out at roughly 7 feet of vehicle clearance underneath and needs 10 to 11 feet overall depending on model. We ask you to measure to the lowest point in the drive-through path, not the peak.
Bay width matters just as much. A 2-post needs 12 feet of clear width to install the columns and still open truck doors between them. A 4-post can squeeze into 10 feet. If your garage door opening is 9 feet wide but the bay behind it is 14 feet wide, the door header is what matters when you drive up onto the runways. We had a body shop foreman near the Missouri line who ordered a home car lift for garage use, and we caught a 6 foot 8 door header during the survey. He swapped to a lower-profile drive-on before we shipped, and everything cleared.
Electrical, Air, and Fluid Line Prep
Every commercial 2-post needs a dedicated 208 to 240 volt single-phase 20 or 30 amp circuit. Storage 4-posts usually run on the same 240 volt feed but draw less amperage. If your garage subpanel is 60 amp total, you can make it work with load management, but do not run a welder and the lift at the same time. We recommend a dedicated 30 amp breaker on its own leg. Get the outlet located within 6 feet of the power unit column so you are not running extension cords for a 5,000 lb load.
Air is optional but strongly suggested. Every modern 2-post and most 4-posts have air-actuated safety releases that let you disengage all four locks from the power unit column with the tap of a lever. Without air, you are walking around the lift releasing each lock by hand every time you lower a car, which gets old fast. A 1/4-inch line from a small pancake compressor is plenty. Delivery Access and Forklift Room
Once we know the slab and clearances work, we look at how the freight actually gets in. A 2-post ships on a pallet that weighs 1,800 to 2,200 lb depending on model. A 4-post storage lift crate can hit 2,400 lb and is 20 feet long. That is not a curbside handoff. You need a forklift with 4,000 lb capacity minimum, a clear drive that a semi can back into, and space to set the crate flat on level ground while we unpack it. For pole buildings out on gravel roads along the Iowa-Missouri border, we often bring our own forklift on a rollback if you flag it early.
If we cannot bring equipment and you cannot rent a forklift locally, some sites have used a rented telehandler or even a tractor with pallet forks rated for the weight. What does not work is a landscape skid steer with 2,000 lb forks trying to lift a 2,400 lb crate on gravel. We have watched that go sideways literally. Confirm forklift capacity and driveway grade with us during the survey so nobody is scrambling when the truck shows up.
Choosing Between 2-Post and 4-Post for a Home Setup
The right pick depends on what you actually plan to do. A body shop foreman doing weekend brake service and rotor swaps generally wants a 2-post because it gives clear access to all four wheels at once. A 2-post asymmetric like a Rotary SPO10 or Challenger E10 covers everything from a Civic to a 3/4-ton pickup and can go head-high on tall techs. If your slab meets spec and your ceiling is 11 foot 6 or better, this is usually the right lift.
If you also want to store one car above another, a 4-post like the BendPak HD-9 or a Rotary 4-post is what you buy. It sacrifices some wheel access, and rolling jacks are extra, but it doubles your usable floor. Some folks split the difference with a scissor lift set into the floor, but for a first home car lift for garage build in a garage that is not brand-new construction, a surface-mount 4-post is the safer bet. The Actual Install Day, Start to Finish
A typical 2-post install runs 5 to 6 hours with two techs. We arrive at 8 a.m., stage components, mark the anchor pattern based on your bay layout and door swing, drill 6 to 8 wedge anchors per column with a rotary hammer and dust collector, torque the columns plumb, run the equalizer cables and hydraulic lines, connect power, bleed the system, and cycle it three times empty before we ever put a vehicle on it. A 4-post storage lift is more like 4 hours because there is no cable equalization system, just a single hydraulic cylinder and four column locks.
You do not have to be there the whole time, but we want you present for the final cycle test and the walkthrough. That is when we show you how the air locks work, where the manual release valves are, how to check hydraulic fluid level, and what the daily 30-second inspection looks like.
