Myth: The sticker specs are the specs you’ll actually use

Sticker specs are laboratory numbers. The specs you actually use are what happens in your bay under a real vehicle, with the arms extended to the actual pad position, with the lift held on the safety pawls for three-hour dwell times. The gap between those two numbers is where the hydraulic lift automotive market makes its money on unprepared buyers. We’ve measured lift height on paper against measured lift height in a shop, and the delta can be as much as four inches once the arms are set for the vehicle’s actual pad locations.

That matters. Four inches of headroom is the difference between standing straight under a differential and squatting. It’s the difference between a comfortable eight-hour shift and a comeback for a fluid job that got done half-heartedly because the tech was uncomfortable. Ask your supplier for both numbers — the sticker rating and the practical working height for your specific vehicle mix. A good supplier will give you both. A bad supplier will read you the sticker and hang up. Which one you’re talking to becomes obvious inside two minutes. Myth: Air-hydraulic is always better than electric-hydraulic

We hear this one from long-time technicians who came up on air-hydraulic pumps in dealership settings and stayed loyal to them. In some heavy-truck and inground applications, air-hydraulic still makes sense — the CFM demand isn’t insane, the shop already runs a monster compressor, and the maintenance profile is well understood. Myth: Frame-lift beats lift-by-the-body every time

Two-post lifts lift by the frame; four-post lifts lift by the tires. There’s a persistent belief that the frame-lift approach is always superior. It isn’t. For differential fluid service and for most powertrain work, yes, lifting by the frame lets the wheels dangle freely and makes access easier. But for alignment work, for suspension inspection under load, and for a handful of European-specific diagnostics that require the vehicle to be on its wheels, a four-post is the correct tool. We look for consistency across the spec sheet. A lift that claims a very fast rise time on a small motor is either lying or has undersized cylinders that will die early. The internal consistency of a spec sheet tells you whether the engineering team knows what they’re doing. When to walk away from a lift the internet loves

Some of the most-reviewed hydraulic lift automotive setups on the internet are lifts we don’t recommend and won’t install. That’s a real thing. Reviews get gamed. Marketplace ratings often reflect first-impression assembly experience, not five-year longevity. And a lift whose parts pipeline has quietly dried up can still have four-star reviews from the customers who bought it before it went orphan. We watch this happen every year. The lift that everyone loved in 2021 turns out to be the one nobody can service in 2026.
