A Council Bluffs collector who stores and services a small stable of restored muscle cars called us last summer to install a hydraulic lift automotive in a purpose-built garage attached to his home. Twelve months in, it has been an unusually clean install, and the biggest lesson from the first year is not about the lift itself. It is about the concrete slab, the rebar layout, and the up-front decisions we made together before pouring a single bag of anchor epoxy. This is his first-year story, told with an emphasis on the slab decisions that made everything else easy and the suspension work that has been the primary use case.

The Owner’s Situation Before the Install

The Council Bluffs collector we worked with had spent two years planning a new detached garage specifically to service his growing collection. Six cars, all restored, all driven occasionally, all needing occasional undercar work that had been increasingly hard to do on jackstands in his old garage. He wanted a lift that could store one car above another when needed but was really about giving him full undercar access for suspension work, brake service, and the small tuning jobs that never end on a restored car.

He came to us with a nearly finished building shell and asked what the slab needed to look like. This is the correct order to do things. Slab Thickness and PSI

That is a step above what most residential contractors would pour for a garage floor, and the extra thickness gives real margin for the anchor loads across the four column pads. The overall pour was five inches throughout the garage for simplicity, since specifying different thicknesses in different bays adds cost and complexity that a homeowner rarely wants.

Council Bluffs sits on a mix of glacial till and river-adjacent soils depending on the exact location, and this owner’s site had good compacted fill under a proper vapor barrier. That base preparation is as important as the slab itself. A great slab over a bad base will crack, and a hydraulic lift automotive anchored into a cracked slab is a lift that will eventually loosen. We insisted on the vapor barrier and the compacted base long before we specced the slab thickness. If your builder is not doing both, address that first.

Rebar Layout for a Lift Bay

Rebar is where a lot of homeowners get bad advice from residential concrete crews who have never poured for a lift. For a residential four-post hydraulic lift automotive, we specced a grid of half-inch rebar on eighteen-inch centers throughout the lift bay, with additional short pieces added in the immediate column footprints. That is heavier than a typical residential floor and lighter than a full commercial pour, and it is right for this application.

The reason to spec the rebar carefully is that anchor loads are localized. Each column pushes down and pulls up under load, and the concrete around each anchor experiences both compression and tension cycles thousands of times over the life of the lift. Rebar in the right places distributes those cycles. Without proper rebar, you get micro-cracking that starts around the anchors and grows over years. The extra rebar for this collector garage was a small line item on the total build and it pays for itself in decades of trouble-free service.

Choosing the Right Four-Post for a Collector

We specced a Challenger four-post at nine thousand pounds capacity with a rolling jack for the wheels-off suspension work he does most often. Nine thousand pounds is more than enough for any of his muscle cars, which top out around forty-two hundred pounds even fully loaded. The rolling jack lets him drive up on the four-post, then lift either axle to remove wheels for brake or suspension work. That combination gives him almost all the benefits of a two-post for undercar work while keeping the storage capability of a four-post.

Rotary would have been an equally fine choice. Challenger won for this owner because he wanted a specific runway color and because the lead time on that model was shorter at the time we ordered. Both brands are well supported by our Ames warehouse for parts and service. For any collector planning a hydraulic lift automotive, the four-post plus rolling jack combination is the answer nine times out of ten. It stores when you need storage and services when you need service.

Suspension Work Over the First Year

Over the first year the collector has done coil spring swaps on two of his cars, replaced sway bar bushings on three of them, and done a full suspension rebuild on a car that came out of a barn find. The rolling jack made all of that painless. Roll onto the four-post, lift with the rolling jack under the frame or axle, and both wheels come off cleanly. The four-post’s fixed runways make working around the car easier because the lift stays out of the way of your workspace.

He has also used the lift for storage exactly as planned, keeping his primary driver on the ground and a second car up top during the winter. That flexibility is why the four-post is such a common choice for collectors. Twelve months into the ownership he cannot think of a job that would have gone better on a two-post except maybe the sway bar work, and even that was a small preference. Any hydraulic lift automotive setup for a collector garage should seriously consider this configuration first.

Twelve-Month Maintenance and Fluid Notes

Maintenance in the first year has been light. Cable inspection every three months as we recommended, hydraulic fluid level checked twice and topped off once, and one minor adjustment to the equalization cable tension after about six months. The four-post uses cables for corner sync and those cables can settle a small amount in the first six to twelve months of use. That is normal and it is exactly why we schedule a check-back visit at the six-month mark on every install.

The rolling jack has had zero issues. Its hydraulics have held pressure, the wheels roll smoothly on the runways, and the pads have not shown wear. We do recommend cleaning the runways periodically because dirt on the runway surface can affect the jack’s roll. This is a five-minute chore. Nothing about the first year of this hydraulic lift automotive has been surprising or unpleasant, which is exactly the outcome you want from a collector install. Boring is good when you are storing valuable cars above another valuable car.

The Verdict After One Year

The Council Bluffs collector has been unambiguously happy with this install. His concrete decisions up front were the biggest single factor in the smooth first year. The correct slab thickness, the right PSI, the right rebar layout, and a good compacted base gave the lift a foundation that will outlast the building. His model choice on the lift itself was well matched to his real work: storage plus suspension access via a rolling jack.
