Start here. If the racing team is running four weekends a year and only needs alignment during race season, a used or entry-level hydraulic lift automotive four-post makes economic sense. Decision two — chassis mix and capacity target
Waterloo racing teams run everything from 1,800 lb formula cars to 3,800 lb stock cars to street-legal support vehicles up to 6,500 lb. If the operation is only touching race cars, a 10,000 lb four-post is overkill on capacity but exactly right on runway width and turntable size. If the operation also aligns team haulers or crew vehicles, a 12,000 lb four-post gives you the extra margin without giving up anything.
We would not go below 10,000 lb because the runway width narrows on smaller lifts and race cars with wider wheelbases can be tight. We would not go above 14,000 lb because the runway spacing and turntable diameter start pushing you into commercial-truck territory and the small race chassis actually get harder to align because the front turntables become oversized. Middle of the range is right. Decision three — single-phase or three-phase electrical

If the race shop also does tire changes and pit-lane rehearsal on the lift, two rolling jacks are worth it. If the shop only does alignment and does not need to lift wheels free, one jack or none is fine. The reason to lock a brand is parts and accessory compatibility over ten years — a Rotary rolling jack fits a Rotary rack, a Challenger jack fits a Challenger rack, and mixing accessories across brands compromises the warranty coverage. Pick a badge, stay with it, and do not overthink the choice.
Decision six — install schedule around race weekends
The last decision is timing. A hydraulic lift automotive four-post install takes our crew about seven to nine hours on a good slab with pre-run electrical.
