An off-road builder in Waterloo called us last fall about a hydraulic lift automotive setup for a two-bay overlanding shop that would primarily do exhaust routing and driveline work on lifted Tacomas, 4Runners and Wranglers. The Build: An Overlanding Rig Shop
Overlanding builds are unlike regular restoration work. The vehicles are tall, often with roof-mounted tents, awnings and rack accessories that stay on during service. Exhaust routing on a stock-body Tacoma is straightforward, but the same job on a lifted Tacoma with a rock skid, an aftermarket bumper and a rear tire carrier requires rethinking every clearance. Driveline work needs enough underside room to swing a transfer case, dropping a rear driveshaft, and often relocating exhaust hangers around a new fuel tank skid.
For a hydraulic lift automotive setup in this kind of shop, we ask the operator to describe the tallest vehicle he will ever lift and to add six inches of margin. If the tallest vehicle is 84 inches with a rooftop tent, we need at least 90 inches of clean lift travel plus the standing height of the truck plus a ceiling margin. Arm reach matters. On a stretched-wheelbase Wrangler or a JLU with a bumper-mounted spare, the rear frame pickup points can be pushed out beyond a standard arm’s reach. We often spec extended arms or an asymmetric configuration with the longer rear arm range for overlanding shops. A hydraulic lift automotive setup that cannot reach a lifted JLU rear frame pickup is a lift that is useless for half the customer base, and that is a real risk when the shop specializes in exactly those builds.
Used Lift Audit Points

The audit ran through: ALI sticker present and current, cylinders visually intact with no oil weeping, seals with no visible extrusion, cables not frayed at the sheave, sheave bearings turning cleanly, safety locks engaging positively, anchor holes in the columns not egg-shaped from movement, and paperwork including original install date and any prior service records.
The used lift passed six of the eight audit points. Cables showed early fraying at one sheave and the ALI sticker had expired without recertification. We priced replacement cables at $400, a professional recertification at $500, and freight to Waterloo at $600. All in, the used lift landed at roughly $4,500. That was well under a new commercial hydraulic lift automotive setup and it was actually competitive with a new home-tier lift. But the audit made the difference between a good buy and a coffin.
New Lift Entry Tier
The alternative was a new BendPak or Atlas 10,000 lb two-post in the $4,000 to $5,500 range depending on options. Both are honest home-tier lifts. The pumps are lighter duty than commercial Rotary or Challenger hardware, the cylinders are lighter, and the cables are rated to the same capacity but with less margin. For a two-bay overlanding shop doing five to eight vehicles a week, either would run for five to seven years without drama.
The upside of new is zero unknown history and a fresh manufacturer warranty. The downside is that a new home-tier hydraulic lift automotive setup starts depreciating immediately and does not hold value the way a used commercial Rotary would. For a shop planning to grow into a bigger space in five years and sell the current lift, the commercial used option had a better resale story. For a shop planning to keep the current lift until it dies, either answer worked.
Case Study: The Waterloo Install
The builder chose the used Rotary. We coordinated pickup from the closed shop, freight to Waterloo, new cables installed on delivery, and a professional recertification with fresh ALI sticker. Total spent was $4,600 including freight, cables and recertification. Install into his bay was a Saturday for our crew, single-phase 240V power was already in the panel, and slab was a healthy six-inch pour. The lift was up and certified by Sunday afternoon.
Two seasons in, the lift has run every exhaust and driveline job in the shop with no service events. The builder has since called us for a second lift for a growing sublet business doing suspension work. That second install will be a new commercial Challenger because he wants a matched pair on the same service parts pipeline. The story is that a well-audited used hydraulic lift automotive purchase can be a genuine win, but the audit is the whole game. Buying used without an audit is a coin flip.
Long-Tail Parts Availability
The reason a used Rotary two-post is a defensible purchase is the parts pipeline. Rotary has been building the same fundamental two-post geometry for decades, and every wear part is still available new. Cables, seals, hoses, sheaves, safety locks, arm pins and pump internals are all off-the-shelf. Our own parts warehouse in Ames stocks the common wear items in depth. A used lift with clean bones can be brought back to full commercial condition for a fraction of the cost of a new equivalent.
The same logic does not hold for random imports. Off-brand lifts often have proprietary cylinders and non-standard cable end fittings, and once the original importer stops answering the phone, the lift becomes a paperweight. That is the honest reason we push Rotary and Challenger on the commercial side and BendPak or Atlas on the home tier: the parts stay available.
Why Used Is Not Always Cheaper

A common failure mode is a lift that has been moved multiple times, with anchor holes hogged out from repeated column relocation, cables cut and rerun by non-professionals, and cylinders showing seepage that the seller waves off. Any one of those issues can turn a $2,000 marketplace lift into a $5,000 restoration project once we get honest about what has to be fixed.
Our advice for used hydraulic lift automotive purchases is: only buy from a source that can produce install-date documentation and service history, only buy after a professional audit, and only buy brands with parts pipelines.
