A farm-shop owner outside Cedar Falls called us early this spring wanting a hydraulic lift automotive install to handle oil changes and fluid service on the family’s pickups, a couple of grain-cart trucks, and the occasional neighbor tractor pulling in for a favor. His pole barn had a corner he’d been eyeing for years, and the question was simple: what does he actually need to check before he pulls the trigger on a lift? We wrote him a site-survey checklist that same afternoon and walked it through with him on speakerphone. This is that checklist, cleaned up and generalized so any rural Iowa shop can use it before spending real money.

Start With the Slab, Not the Lift Model

The slab is the first thing to know because it decides whether any lift purchase makes sense at all. For a commercial-rated two-post rated to nine or ten thousand pounds, most manufacturers require at least four inches of 3,000 psi concrete with acceptable rebar or wire mesh, on top of a compacted subgrade. Farm-shop pole-barn slabs frequently miss one or both of those requirements. We’ve seen shops where the corner in question had a 3.5-inch pour, unreinforced, laid over sandy fill. That’s a hard stop — the anchors won’t hold their pullout rating and the shop is one loaded arm-swing away from a serious injury.

Get a core sample if you don’t have your original pour paperwork. A concrete guy can drill a two-inch core, measure the thickness at four spots around the intended footprint, and tell you what’s under it. If the slab is thin, you have two options: pour a proper footprint pad tied into the existing slab, or step down to a mid-rise or portable lift with a lower per-anchor load. Either way, learning this in the survey phase saves you from crating a two-post lift you can’t legally bolt down. Slab decisions come before hydraulic lift automotive brand decisions every single time.

Ceiling Height, Truss Layout, and Overhead Shutoff Clearance

Cedar Falls-area pole barns tend to have healthy ceiling heights, but the number that matters is the underside of the lowest obstruction over the lift footprint — not the ridge. Trusses, purlins, sprinkler drops, insulation net, and lights all count. A standard clear-floor two-post overhead lift needs about twelve feet of clear underside for anything up to full-size truck work; a floor-plate version can drop to about ten feet but limits vehicle height on the lift. Measure both. Also check the swing arc of the overhead crossover during erection — you’ll temporarily need more head clearance to stand the columns up than the finished install requires.

If you plan to raise a lifted three-quarter-ton pickup, add the vehicle’s roof height to your maximum lift rise and add another two feet of shutoff clearance on top. That’s your real ceiling requirement. In an unheated pole barn, factor in whether ceiling insulation adds or subtracts a few inches; blown fiberglass batts sag over time. Power Supply and Electrical Feed

Most commercial two-post lifts come with a 220-volt single-phase motor. Farm shops with 200-amp panels almost always have plenty of headroom, but the run to the lift bay is the variable. Long wire runs on undersized conductor produce voltage drop that shortens motor life on hydraulic lift automotive powerpacks. We size feeds off the actual distance, not just the amp draw. A twenty-five-foot run to a 220V motor works fine on 10 gauge; go seventy-five feet on the same wire and you’re chasing motor issues within a year.

If the barn is 100-amp service, verify your existing panel headroom with a clamp meter across a normal operating day before you assume the lift can share the box. Welders, grain-drier heat lamps, and shop compressors don’t play well with a lift powerpack all trying to inrush at the same moment. On a few farms we’ve quoted, the right answer has been a small dedicated sub-panel just for the lift bay, fed from the main by an electrician. That’s not overkill — it’s the difference between a clean install and a lift that trips the main breaker every third pull-up. Get an electrician to look at the actual feed before you order.

Drainage, Oil Handling, and Waste Storage

Oil-service workflow is the whole reason for this lift, so plan the oil handling in the survey stage. That means: where does the drain pan sit while you’re pulling the plug, where does the used oil go from there, and how does the used-oil tank get pumped out. Pole-barn floors that slope even a quarter inch toward the north wall will collect drain-pan drips over years and stain in ways that never come clean. If your slab is dead flat, plan on a floor mat under the lift footprint and a spill kit on a hook near the powerpack.

For used-oil storage, the practical minimum on a rural shop is a 55-gallon drum with a manual pump and a spill tray, sized to catch a full tip-over volume. That’s what your inspector, your insurance carrier, and your future self will all thank you for. Filter waste can go in the same drum if you drain filters overnight into a can first. Also plan a hand-degreaser station near the lift — techs stepping down from a raised vehicle with oily hands will otherwise touch the lift controls and the powerpack reservoir cap, and grease works into the polished ram surface and the seal packing over time. Small habit, long life on the lift.

Vehicle Mix and Capacity Selection

The vehicle mix is what drives the capacity number. A farm running a mix of half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickups, a small SUV or two, and a couple of ATV trailers can live comfortably on a nine or ten thousand pound two-post. If there’s any chance a grain-cart truck or a small dump body ends up on the lift, jump to a twelve-thousand-pound Rotary or Challenger with taller columns — the extra six inches of column height gives you rise clearance for those higher-frame trucks. Never plan capacity right at the vehicle GVWR; leave twenty percent headroom for tools in the bed and passengers who forget to get out.

For a shop whose main use is oil service on lighter vehicles but occasional heavier work, we’d rather see a slightly bigger lift than a right-sized one. The extra capacity costs a few hundred dollars up front and gives you options for years. A hydraulic lift automotive setup that’s constantly pushed within a hundred pounds of its rating will show wear in the arms, restraints, and cylinder faster than one loafing at 60 percent duty. Right-size for the future you, not the current you.

Install Day: What We Bring and What You Provide

When we do a Cedar Falls install ourselves, we bring the crate, the anchor kit, the hammer drill with proper masonry bits, a torque wrench calibrated for the manufacturer’s spec, hydraulic fluid, and a level long enough to reach across both columns. What you provide is a swept, clear bay with the intended footprint marked in chalk, power roughed to the corner where the powerpack will land, and one person to run for tools. Plan a full day even for a clean install; expect two days if there’s any anchor-hole surprise.

If you’re doing your own install with a helper, get the manufacturer’s install manual before the crate arrives and read it end-to-end. Rotary and Challenger publish detailed step-by-steps; skipping around usually costs you a torque error that shows up as a cable-tension imbalance six months later. Anchor torque is the one number nobody should eyeball — under-torque and the base plate walks; over-torque and you spider-crack the slab. If a step in the manual reads unclear, call our tech line before you do it; a phone call is free and a torn-out anchor is not. Getting Started Without Overcommitting

The Cedar Falls farmer we started this article with ended up ordering a ten-thousand-pound Rotary two-post after his core sample came back at a healthy 4.5 inches on properly reinforced slab. He ran his own power drop with an electrician neighbor, we shipped the lift out the following week, and his son handled the install with our tech on speakerphone twice during the day. Total time from first call to first oil change: about eighteen days, most of that waiting for the electrician’s schedule.
