Month 1: the quote and why a hydraulic lift automotive four-post made sense

Month 2: freight staging in the Iowa Great Lakes
Freight from our warehouse in Ames to the Iowa Great Lakes region is about a four-hour truck run in dry weather, six hours if the interstate has a wreck. Month 6: the first cable groove-slip and what it taught us
Six months in, the shop called with a real problem. A rear cable had slipped a groove on the equalizer sheave, and the runway was sitting an inch and a half lower on one corner than the other. The shop foreman noticed it on a Monday morning when he raised an empty motorhome and heard a metallic tick at the top of travel. He called us at 7:15 a.m., and one of our techs drove to the Great Lakes that same day.
The cause was straightforward: the cable had stretched slightly, which is normal in the first year of service, and the equalizer sheave had not been checked at the ninety-day mark because nobody knew to check it. We re-groomed the cable, adjusted the equalizer, retensioned the system, and cycled the lift under load a dozen times. Cost to the shop was zero because it was inside our first-year service credit. Month 9: winterization considerations

The honest answer is mostly no, with two caveats. Hydraulic fluid viscosity does change with temperature, and if the shop keeps its bays at 45 degrees at night, the fluid gets thick enough that the first morning cycle is noticeably slower. ISO 32 handles that range fine, but if the shop drops below freezing, we recommend a heater kit on the power unit or an upgrade to a low-temperature-rated fluid.

We coach every shop to spray the cams with a light penetrating lubricant every fall, work them through the range, and inspect them monthly through winter. We shipped them a spare gallon of fluid and a can of the exact penetrating spray we use, so they had it on the shelf before the first freeze.
Month 12: what the shop would do differently
Twelve months in, we asked the shop foreman what he would do differently if he had to buy the hydraulic lift automotive four-post over again. His answer was short: nothing about the lift itself, but he would have paid for the mid-rise scissor add-on from day one instead of adding it in month seven. The scissor lives between the runways and lifts the vehicle above the tires so wheel and brake work happens without a jack tray.
