Every hydraulic lift automotive decision tree begins with the same question: what are you actually replacing, and why. The Des Moines restoration shop owner was replacing a twenty-year-old two-post that had served the shop honestly but was showing its age — slow to raise, occasional bypass at the pump, cables that had been retensioned three times, safety cams that stuck about once a month. The lift was still safe but it was slowing the shop down.

The owner asked whether it made sense to keep patching or to replace. The honest answer depends on the residual value of the old lift and the marginal productivity gain of a new one. Nine thousand pounds is the entry-level commercial capacity and covers every passenger car, every muscle car, and most trucks the shop restores. If the shop’s vehicle mix is skewed toward classics — Camaros, Mustangs, Chevelles, mid-sixties trucks — 9,000 lb is honestly enough. Ten thousand pounds is the market sweet spot and adds real margin for modern SUVs and half-ton pickups that occasionally come in for a resto-mod project. Twelve thousand pounds is the safer choice if the shop takes on heavy classic trucks or restoration work on modern crew-cab pickups.

Every extra thousand pounds of capacity costs real money, so the branch decision matters. The Des Moines shop owner’s vehicle mix ran 60 percent muscle cars, 30 percent light trucks, and 10 percent heavier work. Nine thousand pounds would have covered 90 percent of the work. Ten thousand pounds covered 100 percent with headroom for the occasional heavier vehicle. Twelve thousand pounds was more than needed for his mix. Arm configuration is the second branch, and for a restoration shop the answer is asymmetric almost every time. An asymmetric two-post positions the columns slightly off-center so the vehicle sits with more space in front of the front doors than behind. That opens door swing clearance for tech and customer access — a real convenience when the shop is showing a car in progress to the owner. A symmetric two-post sits centered and gives more balanced weight distribution but restricts door swing.

On modern lifts, both configurations use similar hydraulic components, so the capacity and rise ratings are equivalent. The choice comes down to workflow. For a restoration shop where owners walk in to look at the progress on their cars, asymmetric wins. For a heavy-duty commercial bay running mostly work trucks, symmetric sometimes wins because the extra weight-balance matters. The Des Moines shop was showing cars regularly, and the owner asked us specifically for the asymmetric option. We agreed. Arm length within the asymmetric configuration is a sub-branch — long-arm option adds reach for classic trucks with long wheelbases, short-arm option is tuned for tighter vehicles. The Des Moines shop went with a mixed-arm configuration: long fronts, short rears. That covered the muscle car range and the light truck work without compromise.

Rise height branch: standard versus tall column

Tall columns give closer to 82 to 84 inches. Standard columns are fine if the tech is only doing quick under-vehicle work, but for extended body panel work, undercoating, or engine cross-member fabrication, tall columns are worth the modest premium. The Des Moines shop had a 14-foot open ceiling in the target bay, which was tall enough for tall columns without modification. Transmission service branch: two-post plus jack tray, or bare

Transmission service is a specific branch worth its own consideration on a restoration-shop hydraulic lift automotive decision tree. Modern transmission service on a classic muscle car often means pulling a Turbo 400 or a Muncie four-speed for a rebuild. That is a two-person job with the transmission on a rolling jack, and it demands enough clearance under the vehicle for the jack to work. On a two-post at standard rise, transmission removal is doable but tight. On a two-post at tall rise, it is comfortable.

Adding a hydraulic jack tray that spans between the arms gives the tech a place to set the transmission during removal without needing an assistant. That accessory adds real productivity to a shop that does transmission work weekly.
