Storage bays cycle vehicles differently than a normal service bay: cars go up, stay up for months, come down, and the same lift takes another one right after. That constant loaded-hold state punishes cylinder seals in a way daily oil-change work never does. The seal packing takes a set from being under pressure for weeks at a time, and when the cylinder finally drops back down, the seal doesn’t reseat cleanly against the polished bore. That’s when internal bypass starts — the lift feels sluggish, holds pressure a while, then slowly settles.

If your storage rotation involves a hundred lift-cycles a season on the same column pair, expect gland-packing life somewhere in the seven-to-nine year window instead of the fifteen a normal service bay might see. In an unheated Iowa or Illinois storage building, seals stiffen at forty below and grab the polished ram surface during pulldowns, which chews microscopic scoring into the bore. Neither problem is dramatic on its own, but stacked across five winters they explain why a lot of used dealership hydraulic lift automotive equipment we inspect has low visible use and terrible internal condition. Reading a Used Lift’s Real Condition Before You Buy

The structural five-year is the real cover, and it’s a big deal on used lifts because the moment you buy used, you inherit whatever’s left of the original warranty (usually nothing) with no way to add coverage. If your bay math depends on that lift being productive fifty-plus weeks a year, that gap is the number to weight most heavily in the used-vs-new decision. A brand-new commercial two-post is a boring purchase; that’s exactly what a dealership seasonal-storage or main service bay usually needs. Save the exciting used deal for a personal garage.

Cylinder Rebuild vs. Full Replacement

When a Davenport dealer’s existing hydraulic lift automotive setup starts bypassing, the honest first question isn’t used-vs-new — it’s rebuild or replace the cylinder. A cylinder rebuild on a mid-rise or two-post from a name-brand manufacturer runs a few hundred dollars in parts plus labor if a tech does it in-house. Full cylinder replacement is more, and depending on brand availability, we sometimes see week-plus lead times for OEM cylinders. If the lift is under about ten years old, the columns are plumb, the cables are healthy, and the hoses have been kept out of the sun, a rebuild is almost always the right call.

Two rebuilds inside eighteen months is the market telling you the cylinder bore is scored beyond seal-replacement rescue. Adding those up honestly, we’ve had shops discover their "just rebuild the cylinder" plan was actually a mid-four-figure project once every wear item got its due — well past what a discounted new lift would run, once install is factored in.

Dimensions the Spec Sheet Won’t Show You

Spec sheets give you rise, capacity, drive-thru width and overall column height, but they don’t tell you what actually matters when you’re squeezing a lift into an existing storage bay. Ceiling clearance in a dealership storage building is often mixed — an eleven-foot flat span in one corner, ductwork or sprinkler drops down to nine-something a few feet over. A two-post’s overhead shutoff bar needs at least three inches of clean space over the arch. If your storage rotation includes tall crossovers, that arch height needs to be higher than the vehicle’s roofline plus another eight to ten inches of raised clearance, or you’ll clip a sunroof panel someday.

Column footprint on a nine-thousand-pound lift runs roughly twelve to fourteen inches square with the base plate; that number matters for wall clearance and adjacent-bay traffic. Drive-thru height at the top of the crossover isn’t always published — Rotary and Challenger differ by about four inches on similar-capacity models, and it drives whether your delivery-truck-height cargo vans clear cleanly. Rise height is the last one people miss: a "72-inch" advertised rise measured to the underside of a pad might be closer to seventy-nine inches to the frame contact of a truck with modest lift. The spec sheet is a starting point for real hydraulic lift automotive dimensions in an existing bay, not the answer.

Total Cost of Ownership: Used vs New Over Five Years

Run the five-year math and the used-vs-new hydraulic lift automotive question usually answers itself. A commercial two-post lift new from us, installed, sits in a defined price band. A used comparable lift is usually forty to sixty percent of that up front, but the honest number gets worse from there. First-year maintenance on a used lift almost always includes a cylinder rebuild kit, one or two cable swaps if it’s been outdoor-stored, and a hydraulic fluid change — a working thousand-plus in parts plus a day of tech time. Second year, expect arm-restraint gear kits and often a solenoid on the powerpack.

By year three, you’re at parity with what the new lift would have cost in the first place — but you’ve got two years fewer left before the columns and structure themselves reach end-of-life. Where used wins is on a low-cycle shop: a fleet or municipal garage that raises maybe twenty vehicles a week on a lift they’ll retire in eight years anyway. Where new wins is exactly your seasonal-storage-and-main-service dealership case — high cycle count, high downtime cost, and a bay that has to earn its floor space every day. Neither answer is universal. The right buy is the one whose five-year total lands lowest for your specific use pattern, and we’ll walk that math for anyone who calls in.
