The Impala, the Bel Air, the C10 pickup, the K5 Blazer all sit naturally in a symmetric footprint because their center of gravity is close to the axle midpoint. The arm reach is generous at both ends, which matters when frame pickup points on old iron are exactly where the manufacturer put them and not necessarily where a modern arm designer expects. Asymmetric Arm Geometry Explained

An asymmetric two-post rotates each column roughly 30 degrees inward relative to the vehicle centerline, and shortens the front arms so the vehicle sits rearward of the column centerline. Cylinder loading is not perfectly balanced side-to-side, but the design accounts for that with reinforced column construction and specific cylinder rating.

The asymmetric geometry became popular as passenger vehicles got smaller and lighter, and as fleet mixes shifted toward front-heavy front-wheel-drive cars. On a modern Toyota Camry or a Ford Escape, the asymmetric layout is much more comfortable to work with. Door clearance is the difference between the technician squeezing sideways every time and just walking in and out.
