Start with budget — and be honest about what tier you’re in
Restoration shops fall into three rough budget tiers when they buy their first hydraulic lift automotive setup. The first tier is a hobbyist-turned-part-time-restorer working out of a two-car garage, planning to do one project car a year, with a total lift budget in the four-to-six thousand dollar range for equipment and install combined. The second tier is a working restoration shop with two or three technicians, doing frame-off restorations and mechanical refresh work at maybe six to ten projects a year, with a lift budget in the eight-to-fifteen thousand dollar range. The third tier is a professional shop taking on concours-level or high-dollar restorations with published prices and a waiting list, spending twenty thousand or more on equipment because uptime and precision matter more than any dollar saved.
Being honest about which tier you are in matters because it changes the entire recommendation. A tier-one hobbyist should not buy a tier-three lift, because the ROI never lands. A tier-three professional shop should never buy a tier-one lift, because a cheap lift on a paying-customer restoration is going to cost more in downtime and callbacks than the savings ever justified. Then measure your shop — ceiling, door, and slab
After budget, the next branch of the decision tree is your shop’s physical constraints. Slab is the third measurement, and it is the most important. Any hydraulic lift automotive 2-post requires 4.25 to 4.75 inches minimum of 3,000 PSI reinforced concrete under each column. If your restoration shop is in a converted pole barn with a 4-inch slab, you have three options: repour the two column pads, downgrade to a smaller-capacity lift, or move to a low-rise scissor or portable configuration that spreads load differently. There is no point quoting a lift that cannot legally anchor to the floor you have.
Alignment work is the fork in the tree
Restoration shops split into two very different lift specs the moment you introduce alignment work. If you do not intend to align cars in-house — you send frame straightening and toe adjustment to an outside shop — then a standard 2-post or 4-post is fine, and your decision goes down the general-repair branch of the tree. If you plan to align cars in-house, especially older cars with adjustable-A-arm front suspensions that a modern rack-and-pinion shop cannot handle, you need either a proper alignment rack (a specific style of 4-post with slip plates and turnplates) or a scissor alignment lift with the same features built in.
A restoration alignment lift is a real category. The 4-post version has turnplates at the front position, slip plates aft, and an approach angle designed to load a low classic without scraping the front air dam. The scissor version does the same thing at low working height, which is nice for early-model cars with delicate rocker panels. Prices on either version run considerably higher than a standard hydraulic lift automotive 2-post, and neither is the right first lift for a tier-one hobbyist. For a tier-two or tier-three restoration shop, though, an alignment-capable configuration is often the highest-ROI investment on the equipment list, because outside alignment work is expensive and slow.
Overhead vs baseplate for restoration work specifically
Restoration shops mostly work on mid-century American cars — 40s coupes, 50s trucks, 60s muscle, 70s land yachts. Almost all of those cars are under 60 inches tall at the roof. That means restoration shops rarely have the tall-vehicle problem that pushes an overlanding builder or a truck shop toward baseplate. What restoration shops do have, often, is a converted pole barn or an old garage with a 12-to-14-foot ceiling and no room to add height. That is where overhead is still comfortably fine, because a 60-inch coupe can go to full lift stroke under a 14-foot ceiling with plenty of clearance for the overhead beam.
Where restoration shops occasionally want baseplate is in shops that also work on lifted trucks or specialty utility vehicles — a customer restoring a 1970 GMC that also runs a lifted Chevy pickup as a shop vehicle, for example. In that mixed case, baseplate lets both vehicles reach full working height under the same ceiling. For the majority of pure classic-car restoration shops, though, overhead is the right hydraulic lift automotive configuration and always will be. We just make sure we ask about the shop vehicles as well as the customer vehicles before we lock in the recommendation. That small extra question has saved several Cedar Rapids customers from picking wrong.
Capacity — and why 9K is almost always enough for restoration
The next branch of the tree is capacity. Restoration shops overbuy capacity constantly, because there is a general belief that more capacity equals more safety margin. That is not quite right. Where you should step up from 9K to 12K is if your shop actually works on 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups or heavy customs like a Suburban rebuild or an early Cadillac limousine restoration. Those vehicles push into the 6,500-to-8,500-pound curb weight range and start eating into the 9K’s safety factor. For classic car restoration through mid-size truck restoration, 9K is the right hydraulic lift automotive capacity, full stop. Save the extra dollars and put them toward better arms — three-stage front, screw pads, truck-specific frame adapters — because the arms and pads are what actually make daily use pleasant on a restoration shop’s mixed inventory.
