His two existing 2-post bays stayed booked. Brake work on customer tow vehicles was the constant, and adding a third 2-post would have required rerouting the compressed air loop and shifting a parts inventory shelf. A mid rise scissor lift dropped into the third bay without any of that, gave him a fast third lifting station for rotor swaps and axle work, and left him with the flexibility to fold the platforms flat when winter parts staging took over.

He was also thinking about the tech’s back. Brake service on modern tow vehicles involves a lot of caliper wrestling and rotor lifts, and doing it from a creeper on the floor is hard on a body over years. Failure symptoms are predictable. Weeping at the rod is the first visible sign of gland-seal wear, and it shows up as a small fluid ring on the base plate under the cylinder. Slow platform drift with a vehicle at rest suggests piston-seal wear. Both are catchable during a monthly walk-around, and both are cheaper to fix at the first warning than at the point of full failure. Our east-central Iowa customer wrote a monthly cylinder inspection into his shop opening checklist from month one. That habit is what caught the seal issue at month seven before it became downtime.

When Seals Started Weeping at Month Seven

Month seven brought a small surprise: the shop opening checklist flagged a fluid ring under the primary cylinder on the mid rise scissor lift. Not a puddle, not a drip during lift cycles, just a light film about three inches across on the base plate. That is textbook rod-gland seal weep at the earliest stage. If the same weep had gone unaddressed for six more months, contamination would have entered the barrel, the piston seal would have started to grade, and the rebuild might have required a rod refinish or a full cylinder swap. Year-One Numbers: Payback and Downtime
